What exactly does a middle school counselor do?

A school counselor helps students with a wide range of personal, social, academic, and career-related challenges. Our job includes:

  • Social-Emotional Support: Helping students with friendship problems, emotional regulation, and coping with stress or anxiety.
  • Academic Guidance: Assisting with time management, study skills, setting goals, and overcoming school-related challenges.
  • Crisis Intervention: Providing immediate support during difficult times such as family changes, grief, or trauma.
  • Group Counseling: Facilitating small groups to address common issues, such as building self-confidence or managing stress.
  • Collaboration: Working with teachers, parents, and administrators to support students' overall well-being.

How are you different from a therapist at an outside agency?

  • School Counselor: Focuses on short-term, school-related issues, works to prevent or resolve challenges that impact students' academic and emotional success in school, provides group and individual support, and collaborates with teachers and parents.
  • Therapist (Outside Agency): Provides long-term, specialized therapy for more complex mental health concerns, offers in-depth treatment, diagnoses mental health conditions, and often works on personal issues that extend beyond school life.

  • How do children get to see you?

  • Self-Referral: Students can stop by the counseling office or fill out a counselor referral form to schedule a meeting if they need support.
  • Teacher or Staff Referral: Teachers or staff members may refer students who might need extra help or guidance.
  • Parent Referral: Parents can reach out to us directly if they feel their child would benefit from counseling.
  • Crisis Support: If a student is in immediate need of support, they can come to the counseling office office right away, or a staff member will bring them to us.

  • Will you notify me if you see my child?

We will notify you if we see your child for ongoing counseling, especially if there are any concerns that require your attention. For brief, one-time sessions, we may not always contact you unless there's a need to share important information or if your child's safety is involved. If you ever have questions or concerns about your child's visits, please feel free to reach out to us directly. Our goal is to work collaboratively with you to support your child's well-being.
