PHS College & Career Corner

Friday represented the final day of the 3rd marking period. We are entering the last marking period of the year! Many of you are starting to plan for the summer and are exploring your educational opportunities. We had a number of students register for dual enrollment courses this week, taking advantage of our sponsoring school district status to receive low tuition costs and the opportunity to experience a college class while in high school!

Looking at the weeks ahead, today's newsletter highlights upcoming events, including An Evening with the Experts, College and Career Fairs & Visits, Employment Opportunities, a BIG Scholarship Application, a STEM Day Field Trip, and Girls Spark Summit.

Students and families in grades 9-11, mark your calendars now! PHS will host College Information Night: An Evening with the Experts on Monday, April 22nd at 6:30. You will have the opportunity to attend two sessions with professionals from Lafayette College, Rutgers University, Widener University, A+ College Financial Solutions, and Penn State's Scheyer Honors College.

FAFSA help: FAFSA applications are down significantly this year with the delayed roll out and continual calculation errors. If you have not yet applied and need help, please reach out. Here are some great resources, but do not hesitate to contact PHEAA or me if I can be of assistance:Learn about the FAFSA and How to Apply | PHEAA. Please check here for regular updates about FAFSA and to see if you may have been impacted by any of the ongoing issues: FAFSA Updates

Please check your email that you used to fill out the FAFSA, as the link will be sent there inviting to you complete the application. It appears that this will not happen until later in April, but learn what to do when you get the email here: Next Steps to Apply for a PA State Grant

Many colleges will offer summer campus visits. While you won't get to experience the college in its truest form, you will often have a chance to attend specialized programming and speak with individuals in leadership roles within the university. See below for an example of one from the University of Pittsburgh, who happened to visit Penncrest this past week! Don't forget to get your application fee waiver (or ask if they offer them) when you visit your potential schools 😊

For students looking to explore the serenity of nature while earning a top notch education in an unassuming yet challenging environment, Juniata College just might be the perfect fit for you! Approximately three hours from our area, you'll travel to the heart of central Pennsylvania where you will not be able to choose a major, but rather, a Point of Emphasis or two (think: interdisciplinary) to study for the next four years. A College That Changes Lives, Juniata's small student body of 1,600 undergraduates engage with professors ranked in the top 10 most accessible in the nation. Research thrives at their 316-acre nature preserve, making biology one of the largest areas of study with many students pursuing doctorates in veterinary medicine. Not into the sciences? The campus offers its own art museum on campus with museum studies students receiving 100% placement in graduate school.

Juniors & Seniors - Interested in pursuing a career in the STEM field? Register here to attend DCCC' STEM Career Day on April 24th: DCCC STEM Day Field Trip Interest Form. Space is limited and students must complete a field trip permission form to attend. See Ms. Allen for details!
