The Weekly Update
August 15th, 2025

Welcome to our ECSE Classroom!
THE HAPPENINGS IN OUR CLASSROOM!
🌟 Look what we are doing! 🌟
Reading
This week, we started reading "Max's Breakfast." With this book, we learned about different foods and how to say if we like them or not. We also included an introduction to table manners which we have been working on during snack times.
We also did some picture walks, saw some of the illustrations in our story, and predicted whether Max would be eat or hide his egg.We also introduced the new words which are please, no, all done, and more.
Math
This week, we continued to specifically look at measuring animal body length as well as different fruits and vegetables!
Writing (Fine Motor)
This week we have been practicing our tracing of lines and different letters with different sources (ie. pencils, crayons, markers, and paint) as well as doing some fun new fine motor activities.
In congruence with our story, we also practiced finding our core words, middle and ending sounds in vocabulary, and focused on the letters u, w, y, and z plus reviewing other letters that we have already covered. We also added in some tracing into our math lesson by making our own flowers.
We also did some fine motor arts and crafts that included:
-Velcro
-Paint
-Dot Paint markers
-Coloring (markers and crayons)
-Tearing
-Glitter
Skills Corner
This week Skill: Potty Training
- Preparation: Introduce a potty chair, read books about toilets, and allow them to get comfortable sitting on it with clothes on.
- Routine & Rewards: Establish a consistent routine, such as sitting on the toilet 15–30 minutes after meals. Use stickers or small rewards (like M&Ms) for successful attempts.
- Independence: Let children choose their own "big kid" underwear to increase engagement.
- Handling Accidents: Remain calm and avoid punishing, as this can cause fear and anxiety.
- Sit First: Teach boys to sit down for both urine and bowel movements initially to avoid mess and encourage stability.
- Aiming: Once they have mastered sitting, teach them to stand by placing small targets in the toilet, like cereal, for them to aim at.
- Wiping: Teach girls to wipe from front to back to prevent infections.
- Positioning: Use a footstool to ensure their feet are supported, which helps with muscle relaxation for bowel movements.
The 3-Day Potty Training Method
- Preparation: Remove diapers (except for naps/nighttime) and keep your child in easy-to-remove clothing or no pants at all for several days to encourage awareness.
- Intensity: This method requires staying home for 3 consecutive days to focus entirely on potty training, often leading to faster results.
- Focus: Take the child to the toilet every 30–60 minutes and encourage them to drink fluids to increase opportunities to practice.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Forcing: Do not force a child to sit on the toilet for more than 5 minutes or if they are resisting.
- Ignoring Readiness: Starting too early (before age 2) often leads to frustration; wait until they show signs of readiness like interest, dryness for 2+ hours, or verbalizing the need to go.
