State SBA Information
Dear Families,
This spring your student will take the Smarter Balanced tests in math and English language arts. Students in grade 8 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).The results from these tests will help us identify your student’s strengths, areas of growth and their readiness for the next step in their educational path.
Students will take all parts of the assessment online. The math and language arts assessments are administered in two parts; a computer adaptive test (CAT) and a performance task (PT). The testing schedule for MMS students is as follows
For more information about the assessment: Smarter Balanced and WCAS
Please call or email Amy Montgomery, Principal or Kathleen Tuttle, District Assessment Director if you have questions about state testing.
Quarter 3 Report Cards
Report cards for 3rd quarter are updated in Skyward. You should receive a hard copy of the report card by mail by the end of next week.
Shelter in Place for Lahar Drill
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is participating in a regional lahar exercise, which is designed to test and improve the ability to evacuate or shelter students and staff in the event of an incoming lahar from Mount Rainier. Schools on the hill in Bonney Lake* will shelter in place. Our Sumner valley schools will evacuate their buildings. This message is for families whose students attend a SBLSD school in Bonney Lake.
On the morning of April 23, students at our Bonney Lake schools, including childcare/preschool programs, will shelter in place by remaining at school inside their classroom. Shelter in place is a short-term safety procedure intended to protect students and staff from potentially hazardous outside conditions, such as a lahar. As part of the drill, schools will review shelter in place procedures. In the event of a real lahar, school buildings on the hill will become gathering places, taking in students, staff and members of the community. The shelter-in-place drill should last no longer than five minutes.
The District’s participation in this regional lahar exercise, known to be the largest of its kind in the nation, includes surrounding school districts, cities, towns and emergency management agencies. SBLSD has worked closely with the cities of Bonney Lake and Sumner to coordinate this exercise.
Learn more about SBLSD’s lahar drill and the regional exercise.

Secondary Schools: Bonney Lake HS, Lakeridge MS, Mountain View MS
Elementary Schools: Bonney Lake, Crestwood, Donald Eismann, Emerald Hills, Liberty Ridge, Tehaleh Heights, Victor Falls
Toys vs. Fidgets at School
We’ve recently noticed an increase in students bringing toys to school that are becoming distractions during learning time. In particular, items like NeeDohs that can break open have created messes in classrooms and disrupted instruction.
We absolutely recognize that some students benefit from small fidgets to help with focus and self-regulation, and we want to continue supporting those needs. At the same time, there is a fine line between tools that support concentration and toys that can become a distraction for both the student and others.
We’re asking for your support in helping your child make thoughtful choices about what they bring to school. Simple, non-disruptive fidgets are appropriate, but we would appreciate your help in keeping toys—especially those that can break, make a mess, or draw attention—at home.
Thank you for partnering with us to create a focused and positive learning environment for all students.

Comprehensive Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Prevention Curriculum
Parent Curriculum Review Night
Washington State law requires that every student receives Comprehensive Sexual Health education, including HIV/AIDs prevention education, in grades 6 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons and excuse their student from these lessons if they wish.
The district is hosting a Curriculum Review Night to provide an opportunity for parents and guardians of students currently enrolled in the classes listed below to preview Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS prevention teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
Curriculum Preview Night
May 14, 2026 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Sumner-Bonney Lake School District Administration Building, Board Room
The information below outlines how a parent or guardian may review materials and, if they choose, request an excusal for their student in accordance with state law.
● Human Growth and Development (Puberty): Taught in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade classes listed above
In accordance with RCW 28A.300.475, a parent or guardian may excuse their student from human growth and development instruction upon written request to the building principal and/or classroom teacher. Previewing instructional materials is not required in order to request an excusal.
● HIV/AIDS Prevention Education: Taught in all classes listed above
Under RCW 28A.230.070, state law requires that parents or guardians attend one of the district’s information sessions in order to request that their student be excused from AIDS prevention education. Following attendance at the Curriculum Preview Night, you will have the opportunity to excuse your students from these lessons. If you are unable to attend the preview event and you wish to view the resources, please contact Instructional Services at (253) 891-6065 to schedule a viewing appointment.
