From the Senior Leadership Team – Term 2, Week 1

Welcome back to Term 2

Welcome back to our school whānau. We hope you’ve had a relaxing couple of weeks at home. It has been a busy break for TNIS, with renovations underway on our roofs and bathrooms across the school!

It was fantastic to see so many parents on Wednesday afternoon and evening for the Parent-Teacher Meetings. These meetings are a great way for whānau to connect and to be involved in the learning process. Teachers valued discussing specific learning goals or targets for each child. If you were not available on Wednesday and have any questions or concerns, we suggest contacting your child's classroom teacher and booking a short after-school meeting over the next few weeks to ensure you're best prepared to support your child's learning in 2026.

Term 2 will be a busy one at the school. As a Normal School, we have close relationships with several tertiary study providers, and we regularly host student teachers throughout the year. Mentoring future teachers is a responsibility that we enjoy, and having these student teachers in our classrooms is a significant asset to your child’s learning and our school.

While mentoring these student teachers, your child benefits from a much lower student-to-adult ratio, enabling more frequent one-on-one support and small-group instruction. These student teachers also bring fresh energy and utilise the latest evidence-based teaching strategies from their university studies in our classrooms.

As a reminder, we use our Daily Notices to advertise a wide range of opportunities and reminders for our learners, including our various groups, as well as sporting signups and trials. It’s a good idea to review the daily notices occasionally and talk to your child about whether they wish to sign up for any of the groups or sports opportunities offered.

One of this week's daily notices addresses some learners using E-Scooters to travel to and from school. Unfortunately, there have been several cases of TNIS students riding their E-Scooters at high speeds along footpaths and across roads, raising safety concerns for pedestrians and drivers. We kindly ask all parents whose children use an E-Scooter to please remind them about safe riding practices.

ANZAC Day is being commemorated tomorrow, and every year, TNIS Kaiārahi lay a wreath at the Takapuna War Memorial at the Takapuna Library. If your child would like to join the Kaiārahi in the march, the parade assembly is at 8.45 am at Sanders Ave, and the parade marches down Lake Road to the War Memorial.

SCHOOL NEWS AND INFORMATION SCHOOL NEWS AND INFORMATION

Health Room Update

Health Room Reminder

Our Health Room is available to provide short-term care and basic first aid during the school day. We are currently experiencing a high number of visits for follow-up and ongoing care, which we are not resourced to provide.

To ensure the Health Room remains available for learners who require immediate attention, please take a moment to review the information below with your child so they understand its purpose and appropriate use.

What the Health Room is for

  • Treating minor injuries such as cuts, grazes, bumps, or nosebleeds

  • Providing basic first aid (e.g. bandages, ice packs, cleaning wounds)

  • Supporting students who feel unwell (e.g. headaches, nausea, fever, period pain) for a short period of rest

  • Assessing more serious injuries or illness and contacting caregivers or emergency services if required

  • Administering prescribed medication (with appropriate permission)

  • Supporting existing care plans (e.g. asthma, allergies, diabetes)

What the Health Room is not intended for

  • Ongoing or repeated treatment (e.g. regular strapping for sprains)

  • Re-dressing injuries that have occurred at home or on previous days

  • Rehabilitation or continued medical support

  • Long-term supervision while awaiting collection

Once you have been contacted to collect your child, we are unable to supervise them for extended periods while you continue working. A travel time of up to one hour is considered reasonable. If you are unable to arrive within this timeframe, please arrange for an alternative adult to collect your child.

Thank you for your support in ensuring the Health Room remains available for learners who need urgent care.

Our Kids Online

We recently had Rob Cope from Our Kids Online at TNIS. This was an incredibly powerful evening and everyone who atteneded walked away a little wiser and more understanding about the dangers of social media for our kids. This weeks video on whether you should give your kid a phone is great watching.

Should I give my kids a phone?

ICAS 2026

ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. TNIS will host 3 subjects in 2026: English, Mathematics and Science.

ICAS results are in-depth and meaningful, and ICAS evaluates student performance against other competition entrants across the state and nation. The data reveals student strengths and weaknesses and can help you recognise and support your child's academic journey.

Learn more about ICAS here: (icasassessments.com/products-icas/).

The Assessments Calendar with dates of purchase and the windows in which the text is sat can be found HERE.

These are purchased by parents directly through THIS LINK. If asked for our school PPS code it is: IEH393
