Principal's Message

I want to personally invite all families to our second annual Book Character Parade that will take place on Friday, October 30, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. This is an awesome event where our students and staff dress as one of their favorite book characters.

Parade Route (lots of right turns)

The route will begin at the front door, turn right onto 5th Ave, then right onto Gordon, right onto 4th Ave, right onto Oakview, and right onto 5th Ave, and return to class. Parents are invited to cheer anywhere along the parade route.

The Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition is a yearly state-wide writing competition open to any student enrolled in a Georgia public school, grades K-12. Participation is completely voluntary for students, but we hope to get many quality entries! Please contact jbroman-fulks@csdecatur.net with any questions. Happy writing!

Here are a few guidelines to help you through the process:

  • Any genre is allowed (short story, poetry, essay/literary criticism/analysis, journalism, academic/research reports, personal narratives, any other original student writing).

  • Writing piece must be created by the student without the help of others.

  • Entries do not have to be work completed for a class assignment.

  • 1900-word maximum length.

  • Individuals only, no group entries.

  • Entries can be typed or legibly handwritten on only one side of the paper.

  • Writing pieces should be turned in to homeroom teachers or shared with jbroman-fulks@csdecatur.net by end of day Wednesday, November 11th.

  • Be sure the student's name and homeroom teacher are clearly written or typed on writing piece.

  • One winner will be chosen per grade level by a team of scorers to represent CSD at the regional competition.

🎶 CHORUS & COCOA☕

Join us on Tuesday, November 17 at F.Ave for an evening of music, community, and a sweet treat!

Chorus Concert: 6:00 PM in the Multipurpose Room

Cocoa & Cookies: Immediately following the concert on the Lower Field

Come celebrate our talented student singers and enjoy a little time together as a school community! After the concert, stick around for hot chocolate, cookies, and a chance to connect with fellow Fifth Avenue families.

With a suggested donation of $5 per person, you'll receive a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie to enjoy after the show, with all proceeds after expenses benefiting the Fifth Avenue PTO!

Chorus members do not need to purchase a ticket — cocoa and cookies are complimentary for our student performers!

Please reserve your cocoa and cookies in advance so we can plan accordingly. We can't wait to share this sweet evening with you!

Arrival Reminders

Thank you for helping make our arrival routine run smoothly! A couple of important reminders:

  • Car riders must be dropped off and picked up on Oakview Road, not Fifth Avenue. For the safety of our students, we ask that you do not use the front of the school for car rider drop-off.

  • U-turns on Oakview are only allowed at the second loop.

Following these guidelines helps ensure the safety of all our students. We appreciate your cooperation!

Lost and Found

Missing a sweatshirt, a favorite sweater, or a water bottle? Chances are, it's waiting for you in our Lost and Found! We currently have more than 40 items that we hope to reunite with their owners. Please stop by and take a look to see if any of these items belong to your child.

Important reminder: Any items remaining unclaimed after Friday, October 30, will be donated or find a new home. Let's help these belongings find their way back to their owners!

📚SAVE THE DATE📚

When is the book fair open?

The book fair will officially open on Friday, October 30th after the Book Character parade. The fair will then be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. We will be closed on November 3 (Remote Digital Learning Day).

Will my child browse the book fair with their class?

Yes! All classes will have time to preview the book fair and time to return and make purchases.

How can I support my child's teacher through the book fair?

Teachers will make wish lists of book fair books they might like to add to their classroom libraries. Look for the teacher wish list display in the library. This is totally optional but very much appreciated.

How can I support students who might need help to get a book from the fair?

There are two ways we do this. By rounding up your purchase, you contribute to a fund called Share the Fair that allows us to buy books for students who might not otherwise be able to participate. Our very generous PTO also contributes to this fund.

What payment methods are accepted?

Credit/debit cards (including tap with phone), cash, and checks made out to Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary are accepted. Remember that Scholastic charges 8% sales tax.

How does eWallet work?

We strongly encourage families to create an eWallet for their child. You can also invite others to contribute to your child's eWallet. For example, Rebecca's family creates her eWallet with $25. Her grandparents also contribute $25. Rebecca can shop for books on her own and pay using her eWallet. Any leftover funds in eWallets can be used for online purchases, donated to Share the Fair, or carried over to be used in the future.

What if the fair sells out of the book my child really wants?

The online Scholastic Book Fair is available from October 28 through November 6. The online fair is also a good option if you are not able to shop in person. Plus, the online site has many more book options than what is available at the fair. Think birthdays, holiday gifts, etc.!

Do you need volunteers?

YES! We can't do this without volunteers. Click here to sign up.

How much money does FAVE receive from the book fair, and how is it used?

Scholastic returns 25 percent of gross sales back to the school, which is pretty standard among book fairs. We use the funds to support our school, teachers, and students in a variety of ways!
