We’ve had a wonderful start to the school year! Students are settling into their schedules, building new routines, and becoming more comfortable with the rhythm of middle school. Thank you for your partnership in supporting strong morning routines and making on-time attendance a priority. Your efforts at home play an important role in helping students start each day ready to learn.

We are currently in our i-Ready assessment window. Beginning next week, we will transition into our regular STAR schedule, with STAR lessons on Mondays and Thursdays and i-Ready lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

We are also looking forward to welcoming families to Curriculum Night next week. As you read through this newsletter, we hope you will take a moment to celebrate the many great things already happening at North. We are excited about the year ahead and grateful for the strong start our students, staff, and families have made together.

As always, thank you & go North!

With Gratitude,

Monika, Michael & Holly

What are STAR Advisory Blocks? What are STAR Advisory Blocks?

At North, we utilize a regular STAR block to connect with our students beyond their "graded" classes. This block occurs after third period, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The intent for these near-daily blocks are "advisory" in nature as we work to ever-improve how we grow and support our students. During STAR, we structure everything from academic interventions (including iReady Pro) to teaching specific skills that support executive functioning. Due to our Opening Week (9/2-9/4) and Fall testing schedule (9/8 - 9/11), our STAR advisory blocks will not begin until the week of September 14th.

As we get into the school year, below are a few of the topics we will cover during our forthcoming STAR advisory blocks.

September:

  • How to use our North organizers for daily, class-by-class use
  • How to login and use StudentVUE (Synergy for students)
  • How to continually organize your binder and backpack
  • How to access and use your student Outlook email account

October:

  • How to check grades and make a plan for improvement
  • How to prioritize assignments and other to-dos
  • How to connect with teachers and discuss make-ups and re-dos

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

As students enter middle school, regular attendance becomes even more important to their present and future opportunities to succeed. In fact, by the sixth grade, absenteeism becomes the most significant red flags signaling that a student is not on track to graduate high school. Eighth grade attendance rates of 90% and above (no less than 18 absences in a year) is a stronger predictor of high school graduation than eighth grade test scores. As such, we view regular attendance with the utmost importance at North as our STARs cannot learn at high levels if they are not present for these opportunities.

As your child/children do need to be away from school for illness and other understandable reasons, please know that you will receive an automated message confirming your child's absence. This communication will allow you to confirm their absence/reason for our records. You can also excuse your child's absence by email or phone (information/link below).

Youth Bike Club: Returns this year Youth Bike Club: Returns this year

Is your student interested in bicycles? North is partnering with Sharing Wheels Community Bike shop for a third year of Youth Bike Club - inspiring safe, confident riders in our community. This 8-week program will be offered 3 times this school year - Fall, Winter and Spring, and summer too. Students meet weekly after school on Tuesdays and walk to Sharing Wheels for Club, then return to our North campus for our 5:00pm activity bus.

Students participating in this terrific program learn bike maintenance and repair skills, practice safe city riding and build confidence and connection as a group. Upon completing the program, students are eligible for a free bike, helmet, lights, lock and more. Registration is open but space is limited. We are especially in search of female students interested in this program. Once the Fall Club is full, families will be placed on a wait list for Winter and Fall sessions. To register, please CLICK HERE or pick up materials in our front office.

Youth Bike Club is supported with funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act.

North Middle School is about to start our fall fundraiser, and we need your help. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for student enrichment activities and athletics. If you want to participate it is as simple as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Sell our World’s Finest Chocolate - on September 24 students will come home with their chocolate form. Fill out the chocolate checkout form so your student can participate. This is our in-hand, in-town portion of the fundraiser.
  2. Share our online store with all your friends and family (in-town and out-of-town). Hundreds of gift items, wrapping paper, magazines, etc. All online orders are delivered directly to the customer. Register and follow the steps at (website coming soon). Every 4 items ordered online counts as a box of chocolate sold toward prizes.
  3. Check out the prize sheet and set a goal sent home on 9/24. Students can earn amazing prizes.

Thank you all for your efforts in helping North raise funds to enhance our student enrichment activities and athletics (clubs & sports). We appreciate your ongoing support.
