Happy Sunday, Pride!

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoyed a relaxing weekend. Mine was a mix of busy and refreshing. Friday and Saturday were spent chauffeuring my daughter, Maggie, back and forth to Columbia, and on Sunday my wife and I decided to do something spontaneous, we took our kayaks out on the Catawba and paddled a couple of miles between parks. The weather couldn’t have been better, and I only managed to fall in once!

After a long week, it felt good to spend time outdoors, away from my phone, email, and social media. As you know, this year we’ve been focusing on “Pride in Every Step.” There are so many ways to think about what that means, from the way we walk alongside our students from kindergarten through graduation, to the way each letter of PRIDE represents a value we hope to see in our school community.

The “R” in PRIDE stands for Respect, and today I want to recognize our parents for the way you’ve raised your students. This past week was filled with heavy emotions, and I’ll admit I was concerned about what September 11th might bring. It was the 24th anniversary of the attacks on the Twin Towers, paired with the fact that it was the first school day after the shooting of Charlie Kirk and just one day after a school shooting in Denver. With all of that in the background, I was worried our students and staff might come to school emotionally charged.

What actually took place on the 11th was just the opposite of what I expected. Our students were outstanding in their dialogue, words, and communication. One of the areas we’ve started to assess students on is their complex communication, which includes comprehension of information, presentation of ideas, implementation of information, and recognition of culture and differences.

Parents, you would have been proud. What you’ve modeled at home clearly carried into the school setting. In a community of 800 students and 100 staff, each with unique backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs, what could have been an emotionally charged day instead became one marked by respect and care for one another. That’s “Pride in Every Step” in action.

Lions, I hope you all have a wonderful week!

In Pride and Purpose,

~Dr. Compton

Our 3rd grade students began work on their project based learning (PBL) activity in our MPR. They will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers over the next few months as they explore sports and team games and begin answering their driving question: "How can we design a sports event that brings our school and community together?"
