Questions, Resources & Support
K5 Grading Scale and Focus Courses
Focus Courses are newly developed, state-aligned online courses designed around state assessment blueprints to help ensure students are prepared for the way they will be evaluated. These courses emphasize deep conceptual understanding, purposeful skill progression, and rigorous application of learning. Instruction remains standards-based and student-centered, rather than focused solely on test preparation.
Major Highlights:
- Course and assessment design aligned to state testing blueprints
- Built-in instructional rigor guardrails
- Enhanced assessment design, including AI-resistant task types
- Available for tested grade levels in Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies
Assessment Design
Assessments are strategically developed using state testing blueprints to guide item formats, content weighting, and cognitive complexity. This approach supports alignment with state expectations while maintaining a strong focus on meaningful instruction rather than teaching to the test.
Attendance Check!
Did you know Learning Coaches are required to log attendance each day for all students? Any attendance from past school days that was missed should still be entered. Attendance should include time spent in live class sessions, independent study, and any outside-the-classroom learning experiences for each student.
To log attendance, click the button below.
Suggested attendance hours per grade level:
Kindergarten-Grade 3: Daily Hours: 4
Grades 4-5: Daily Hours: 5
Please check your student's attendance hours and make sure they are up to date! Reach out to your teachers if you have any questions!
Reminder: Cameras On!
Learning Coaches, please help us by encouraging students to turn on their cameras during live sessions!
Keeping cameras on helps teachers build stronger relationships with students by allowing for face-to-face interaction, which supports social-emotional connection and engagement. It lets teachers quickly gauge understanding through facial expressions and body language so they can adjust instruction in real time. Cameras also encourage accountability and active participation, helping students stay focused and feel part of the classroom community.
The Flex Program
At AZVA, we know every student learns differently, and families have busy, unique schedules. That’s why we offer Flex, an online learning program available to students who meet school eligibility criteria and are ready for a more independent learning model.
The Flex program is available for students who demonstrate proficiency in Math and ELA on state or benchmark assessments. Families of students who are partially proficient may request a review with school administration. To learn more and see if Flex would be a good fit for your family, click the button below or reach out to your homeroom teacher.
i-Ready Testing
i-Ready is an engaging online assessment and instruction program. It identifies individual strengths and weaknesses in reading and math, then builds lessons and activities targeted for your student to fill in those gaps. Access will be located in Canvas courses. Required Diagnostic testing will take place upon enrollment and again in December and May. Please review teacher emails for your scheduled testing. Students will be required to spend 10-15 minutes each day in math and reading i-Ready my path.

When students enroll and have a history of special education services, our school follows all legal guidelines under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This means we request and carefully review any existing evaluations, eligibility documents, and IEPs to ensure students receive appropriate and comparable services. Our commitment to Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) means that all students, regardless of disability, have access to grade-level curriculum and are placed in courses that align with their academic needs and graduation plans. We’re here to support every learner and ensure a smooth, thoughtful transition into our school community. Please reach out to our Special Education Department for specifics. AZSpecialPrograms@k12.com
Character Counts
This year we are very excited to bring Character Counts to AZVA! Character Counts is a comprehensive character education framework designed to foster ethical behavior, social-emotional development, and academic success. Each Friday teachers and students will explore the Six Pillars of Character during Optional Classroom K12 Zone time every Friday from 10:00-10:30. These pillars serve as the foundation for teaching values by helping students develop skills like self-awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship-building. During the month of September we will explore the different pillars at a glance. The remainder of the year we will focus on one pillar each month.
