Hoyne Happenings
Hello Pembroke Families!
I hope that you all have been enjoying the beautiful spring weather. It has been fantastic to see the energy and excitement that spring brings to our students. On Friday, we had PRIDE Packs and continued talking about special places in our community. Students worked on creating a square for building wide mural we will be putting together. Last week was our final PTA meeting of the year. I want to give a huge shout out and thank you to all of our PTA for an amazing year. We couldn’t do it without you!
This week we have a half day on Thursday, with dismissal at 11:50 as teachers will be participating in professional learning in the afternoon. Additionally, on Friday we will have our final ALICE drill of the year. Please see the reminder about ALICE drills below.
As the end of the year is approaching quickly, please make sure to check the list of dates and read the Press each week to keep up to date on end of year activities and logistics.
Have a great week!
Colleen Hoyne

Pathway to Mathematics Progression Announcement
BPS is proud to share information regarding our district-wide process for identifying students entering grades 3-8 who may be ready for advancement in mathematics. The BPS Pathway to Mathematics Progression is carefully designed to use data to identify students who may benefit from advancing a year in mathematics. Please see this video for a detailed overview of the process. The district has reviewed M-STEP and i-Ready assessment data and has sent invitation letters to those students who have met the identified criteria. If your child did not receive an invitation and you feel that they are ready to progress a year in mathematics, you are still able to register your child to take the Mathematics Progression Assessment. This assessment is a rigorous 90-120 minute exam that covers the standards of the upcoming grade level, which will mean it covers content for which your child has not received instruction. If your child passes the exam, they will be eligible to advance a grade level in math.
Please note that this assessment is not the only or most common way for BPS students to accelerate in the area of math. All students have the opportunity to enter into an accelerated mathematics experience as they enter 6th grade without the requirement of any additional assessment. Our accelerated courses in middle school will enable any child to be one grade level advanced by 8th grade. Participation in this Pathway to Mathematics Progression process will result in a double advancement, which means an 8th-grade student will be taking a tenth-grade math course.
If you believe your child is ready for this level of mathematical progression and would like them to take the MPA exam, please fill out this registration form. Completed forms must be submitted by May 9. All assessments will take place in your child’s school in late May or early June. Each BPS building will share its testing schedule with registered families before the testing date.
ALICE Drill Information
Your child’s safety and security is a top priority, and Pembroke staff, along with the district and local authorities, are continuing to review and improve our crisis response plans. Throughout the school year, we practice school safety drills to include fire, tornado, and lockdown.
As we look ahead to next week, I want to make you all aware that we will be having our final ALICE drill of the school year on Friday, May 2nd. Prior to the drill, teachers will be reminding students of the upcoming drill and reviewing drill procedures in their classrooms. In addition, before starting the drill, I will make an announcement that we are about to begin an ALICE drill and remind students that the purpose of the drill is to keep us prepared and safe if there were ever an emergency.
The purpose of this plan is to eliminate any fear or anxiety related to the drill. I will continue to share information with parents during the weeks that we have ALICE drills in hopes that you can also discuss these drills at home with students as well. If you would like any additional information, I encourage you to use the link https://www.birmingham.k12.mi.us/programs-services/safety-security for resources and further information. The PowerPoints are posted on this site for you to view as well.
If you have questions about any of our district safety procedures, please contact me.
