District 30 Board Brief
May 21, 2026 - Board of Education Meeting Summary
Celebrating our students, staff and you
Dear District 30 Community,
May is a month for celebrating achievements across District 30, and this month’s Board of Education Meeting is no exception.
On Thursday, the Board continued its new practice launched this fall that celebrates student and staff accomplishments at every meeting during the school year. This month focused on the achievements of Maple groups, including the Math Team and their state qualifiers; the Science Olympiad Team and its achievements at state; the Wrestling Co-op and state qualifiers; and the selfless volunteer efforts of our PTO presidents across Maple, Willowbrook and Wescott Schools.
Additionally, the Maple Principal team shared details on progress the school has made toward its 2025-26 Improvement Plan, while the Curriculum and Instruction Team highlighted the successes and areas for growth in the first year of District 30’s new K-5 English Language Arts curriculum.
We are grateful to the teachers and staff who have helped bring the new ELA initiative to life, along with every single District 30 staff member who has helped each school to grow and support our mission to inspire learning, foster resiliency and care deeply for every child.
With graduation, 5th-grade promotions and the end of our school year arriving in less than two weeks, there is so much to cheer for! We could not be more proud of every student and how much each child has grown since last fall. Whether it’s a kindergartener who is now reading confidently out loud, a third-grade student who has shown incredible kindness, or an 8th-grader who has mastered a science challenge, every achievement deserves applause.
District 30 families, please join me in congratulating all students on an outstanding school year – along with their teachers, staff and YOU, who have guided them every step of the way!
Sincerely,
Dr. Emily K. Tammaru
Superintendent of Schools

Board President Mr. Ammar Rizki, Dr. Tammaru and the Board recognized Maple’s Math Team for their outstanding performance this season. Visitor management system approved
The Board unanimously approved a contract with to provide new visitor management system across all District 30 sites over a three-year period. This system will provide a new layer of safety in all schools starting next fall.
Their decision followed an April presentation on the system from District 30 Buildings and Grounds Coordinator Mr. Jason Borst and Willowbrook School Principal Mrs. Katie Compagno. They noted that District 30 conducted a third-party safety audit in summer 2025 across all schools, and a visitor management system was recommended to enhance security in all buildings. This step aligns with the District 30 Strategic Plan goal to allocate finance and operations resources according to the district's educational, staffing, safety and wellness priorities.
Board President said, "This safety measure is paramount for our students" and urged patience from families as the new system is implemented.
President's Award for Educational Excellence
The Board voted in favor of a resolution approving the President's Award for Educational Excellence. This national award is presented to Maple 8th-graders who have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher through 6th, 7th, and the first two trimesters of 8th grade. Additionally, each student must also have received recommendations from a teacher and a second staff member. This is the 43rd anniversary of this award program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education & the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
This year, the awards were presented during a breakfast ceremony at Maple School and recipients will also be honored for their achievement during graduation in early June.

This marked the 25th anniversary of the annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk, held in honor of former Maple Applied Arts Teacher Lew Blond, who passed away from ALS in 2000.
