The Positive Painting Project is a local non-profit endeavor created to honor the memory of our daughter, Katie Whysong. Katie was an avid art student who struggled with depression. She had a huge heart and an amazing idea that we’ve since made our project's mission: using visual art to share positive and encouraging messages in schools and throughout communities. This is typically achieved by holding painting events at schools or festivals, allowing everyone to participate. These one-of-a-kind paintings are then screen-printed with messages encouraging mental health awareness, positivity, & support. They are then installed around the local schools and community spaces by students and volunteers. Our goal is to use this visual art to help de-stigmatize how we talk about mental health, to encourage seeking help when struggling, and to remind us to check in on our friends. We are part of a global movement aimed at ending suicide and the stigma surrounding mental health — especially with our youth.

Sixth-grade students will be displaying their cross-curricular atom project for Remake Learning Day. This project includes an aspect from each department in 6th grade with which their teachers assisted them with. Students first chose an element from the periodic table to research. Their research included a history of their atom, as well as uses and interesting facts.

For the math link, they calculated the number of neutrons that were in the nucleus and found how many electrons go on each outer shell. Finally, they were asked to build a 3D model of their atom. All of their hard work was summed up with a presentation that they displayed on Google Slides. We hope that you enjoy all of the hard work that our sixth graders put into this project.

Whose Got Game?

Using the provided supplies, you will be tasked with designing two games. The first game, a Pinball Machine, must contain fully functioning parts: flippers, drain, holes, bumpers, and a plunger that sends the ball into the playing field of your machine. Second, a Foosball Table must have at least 12 players (6 per team) and 6 rods (3 per player). You must be able to push, pull, and turn the rods properly to move the players. Players must be secure enough to not fall off during play and to hit the ball properly. There must be two opposing goals of equal size that the ball can be knocked into by the players.

Mapping Project

Please join Mr. Dysert as he showcases the colonies as they existed in the pre-French and Indian War period (1750) in an interactive display.

Location: Outside Cafeterias

The 8th grade students have chosen a scientific or mathematical theory or law, researched, and written a 1-2 minute speech. They will interview guests at the Remake Learning Event on their "Hot Takes" of the theory or law and then educate the guests on what the law or theory really is. This project is a combined effort of the 8th-grade math, English, literature, and science classes.

What is an Escape Room? An Escape Room is a collaborative puzzle game in which students work together to complete tasks. These tasks yield clues to find keys, which eventually unlock boxes and lead to a final celebration. You don’t have to have actual locks and boxes, though – you can also imagine these keys as passwords to a final solution. A true Escape Room allows a group of students to assess all of the tasks and to divide and conquer according to their strengths. There will be 5 separate stations throughout the room, and students will play through them simultaneously. The activity will involve movement, energy, and creative thinking. Students have so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher-order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

Using paint chips for academic learning involves exploring “shades” of interpretations or variances of meaning as it applies to an ELA classroom. Just as the colors on a paint chip grow deeper, so should analysis. Paint chips are a great visual for scaffolding shades of meaning with vocabulary, interpretation, etc.

Come view specific lessons and student work examples from a new, hybrid unit that Mr. Grove created this year. This unit combines character development, social and emotional learning, poetry analysis, poetry composition, and extensive vocabulary study.

Location: HS Cafeteria

The BHS science department will be TIE-DYEING pillowcases to show the science of Capillary action.

The dyes we use are called FIBER-REACTIVE. That means a chemical reaction takes place between the dye molecules and the fabric molecules. The dye BONDS with the cotton (cellulose) and actually becomes part of the fabric. That is why the dyes are so permanent and vibrant even after several rounds in the washer!

Location: MS Gym

Come join the math department as we code our way through shuffleboard with Sphero robots! For remake learning, you'll be able to play a game of shuffleboard following all of the usual rules of the game as you code your robot to bring home some points for your team. Our activity will allow you to practice some math computation skills as well as have a hands on experience with the Spheros students use in class. We'll bring the robots, you bring the coding creativity - game on!
