WELCOME to our FIRST newsletter of the 2020/2021 school year!

We know you are working so hard to make this school year work for your child! Together with the teachers and staff at Columbus City Schools, I applaud your tenacity and patience as we navigate these new times. It has been a BIG learning curve for ALL of us to learn how to Zoom and maneuver within a Chrome book, keep a different schedule, and try to get our own work done each day. As Avalon's Family Ambassador, I want to help you in any way that I can. Please feel free to contact me to either introduce yourself, ask a question, voice a concern, or obtain resources. Until we can meet at school in-person, distance does NOT have to mean disconnectedness.

GRADE LEVEL NEWS

This section of our newsletter will report news by one of Avalon’s grade levels. This month, we will feature third grade. Our third-grade teachers, share important lessons for Math, Reading, and Social Studies.

  • Math - working on place value and rounding numbers. Next, we will work on adding and subtracting.
  • Reading - working on what makes a character interesting. We are also working on asking and answering questions.
  • Social Studies - working on rules and laws
  • Writing - working on setting up writers’ workshop. We are also writing a personal narrative this grading period.

Specials News

In Library, all students have 45 minutes with their classmates and Ms. Kathy, Avalon librarian. During that time, we usually have 2-3 books. Younger students have finger plays and rhymes, older students will have time to ask questions and make observations. Topics for all grades included friendship, feelings, and growth mentality as well as social justice and responsibility. We just started mindfulness techniques; ways to use breathing or imagination, teach skills like how to focus, or relax, or be calm.

Positive Behaviors Interventions & Supports

Avalon teachers, staff, and members of the PBIS Team seek to support the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral competence of all students. The PBIS Team meets monthly to address the following interventions and supports:

  • Tier I: Universal practices are experienced by all students and educators across all settings to establish a predictable, consistent, positive, and safe climate.
  • Tier II: Targeted practices are designed for groups of students who need more structure, feedback, instruction, and support than Tier I alone.
  • Tier III: Indicated practices are more intense and individualized to meet the challenges of students who need more than Tiers I and II alone.

Avalon has been awarded the PBIS Bronze Award for the 2018/2019 school year and is in the process of working towards the Silver Award.
