UND NSPA MonthlyCommuniqué September 2022 Issue 20

Welcome to National and International Scholarships Opportunitites Welcome to National and International Scholarships Opportunitites

Scholarship Opportunities for UND Students

For those of you unfamiliar with national and international scholarships, let me briefly introduce myself. I serve UND as the primary advisor on these wonderful academic opportunities that enrich or extend student learning beyond the classroom. These merit based scholarships give students an opportunity to learn a new skill, meet field experts, join a network of like minded peers, or receive funding for graduate study. A brief introduction is provided in the video above that offers a few more words from me and words from students with whom I have worked. If these experiences intrigue you, please contact me.

In this welcome (back) issue, a few students who received these scholarships share the impact of these scholarship opportunities. You will hear from Patricia (Trece) Hopp who discusses her work with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources through the NOAA-Hollings scholarship. Sydney Menne discusses her summer internship with Virgin Orbit through the Brooke Owens scholarship.

These scholarships function not only to assist with your professional direction, but they can serve as a destination point in themselves. Meet Nicole Rothenberg, a Gilman scholar, the first Gilman Alumni Ambassador from ND (and from UND) who describes her new Gilman role.

And, as always, I share updates on scholarship opportunities, their due dates, and campus opportunities when you can meet me (and Nicole) to learn more. I hope you take a look at some of these scholarships listed. Through scholarship work, you will dig deep to discover what motivates you and how your plans and actions at UND form a coherent navigational plan.

Looking forward to working with you!

Patricia Hopp 2021-2023 NOAA Hollings Scholar

This summer I had the honor to work with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve as part of the NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program. During my time in South Carolina, I primarily worked on a research project that evaluated the Coastal Training Program. Through this evaluation, I spoke with people from a variety of professions that had attended trainings in the past. I learned about stakeholder interactions, coastal management issues, and social science research methods. I was also able to be in the field with the DNR's Marine Education Program. During my time with them, I helped teach children about marine life and ecosystems out on boats, fishing, and in the marsh! Highlights included building an oyster restoration reef, catching a shark, and participating in a sea turtle survey (as pictured)!

Note: All activities were supervised by the Department of Natural Resources and all animals were handled under training. Do not tamper or disturb sea turtle nests. They can be severely harmed without proper equipment and handling.

Sydney Menne 2022 Brooke Owens Fellow

This summer I was working as a Propulsion Engineer at Virgin Orbit on the Advanced Manufacturing team. This meant I was doing a lot of work with additive manufacturing, mainly with a powder bed fusion metal 3D printer but a bit also with a hybrid Directed Energy Deposition machine. There was quite a range of things I did, including setting up the machine and build teardown, writing procedures for operators, ordering/wiring/installing/calibrating and finally getting data from a sensor, modeling a tank, and analyzing samples in the materials lab. We also had a launch this summer, which was very exciting to see!

I was matched to this internship through the Brooke Owens Fellowship, which also had a summit in DC this summer. We met so many amazing people: astronauts, CEOs, the National Space Council, NASA scientists,... It was incredible to be able to hear so many experiences, and of course it was wonderful to meet all the other Brookies in person!

Overall, this summer was the best experience I could have asked for and from it, I am convinced I want to go into the Aerospace industry after graduating.

AS499-NSF GRFP

Juniors and Seniors! Are you looking to benefit from a generous stipend, opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct your own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education to which you are accepted?

  • Course AS499 (1 credit) prepares students for a graduate research fellowship program application (based on the NSF GRFP solicitation). This course is is held on Wednesdays at 12:20 PM.

  • The idea is to provide foundational knowledge in preparation of the GRFP application. The national application submission date is in the fall. Ideally, completed course work can be submitted the following fall. Thus the course is ideal for juniors and seniors as applications are mostly submitted in senior year or 1st year of graduate work.

  • The requirement for enrollment is the commitment of the research mentors in the student's area to review and edit the drafts of the students' proposals and provide recommendations for scoring based on the rubric at the end of the assignment.

  • There is a new feature on NSF GRFP page – allowing for an eligibility check – that takes a few minutes (in red at the top of the website https://www.nsfgrfp.org/ ). Please contact alena.kubatova@und.edu if you have any questions.
