Week 8
A Message from Principal Hogue
Happy Sunday, BDF Families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and is ready for another great week at BDF! Normally, I would start my Sunday message with a little NFL commentary, but since my Ravens don't play until 8:00 p.m. tonight, I'm going to keep my thoughts to myself! I've learned not to speak too soon when it comes to my team, and I certainly don't want to jinx anything! So, for now, I'll just say... GO RAVENS! ππ€
BDF Parent Book Club: A Great Start! A heartfelt thank you to the parents who joined us for our very first BDF Parent Book Club! We are currently reading The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, and our first gathering was filled with thoughtful conversation, meaningful reflection, and wonderful perspectives. It was especially interesting to reflect on how education, parenting, childhood experiences, and societal expectations have evolved across generations. While the world our children are growing up in looks very different from the one many of us experienced, our shared commitment to their well-being and success remains the same.
A special thank you to our amazing PTO for generously purchasing books for parents who RSVP'd by the deadline. Your continued partnership makes opportunities like this possible. I am already looking forward to our next meeting and continuing the conversation!
A special thank you to our 8th-grade parents and district partners who joined us for our 8th Grade Parent Night! We appreciate your time, engagement, and commitment to preparing our students for a successful transition to high school. If you were unable to attend, please reach out to Mr. Hunter for information shared during the evening.
Parent-Teacher Conferences: More Opportunities to Connect: As we approach the November 11 Systemic Parent-Teacher Conference Day, I want to clarify our conference options and share how our teachers are working to provide greater flexibility for families. The traditional November 11 conference schedule begins at 9:00 a.m., with the last conference scheduled for 3:30 p.m. After accounting for lunch and breaks, teachers have approximately 6 hours available for conferences. Many of our teachers have elected to offer an alternate schedule with extended hours before and/or after school, providing 8 hours of conference availability, two additional hours for families to connect. Teachers will participate in either the traditional November 11 schedule or the alternate schedule, not both. Conference sign-ups have been shared, so please contact your child's teacher if you are unsure which option they have selected.
I also want to provide some perspective on conference availability. At BDF, we conference as grade-level teams, allowing families to hear from multiple teachers. Due to instructional responsibilities, planning schedules, and contractual requirements, we designate only one day per week for conferences, accommodating approximately two families. Even with extended conference hours, it is not possible to meet with every family during the designated conference window. Teachers have been directed to proactively contact families of students experiencing academic and/or behavioral challenges. This does not mean other families should not sign up! We welcome all families, whether you have concerns, questions, or simply want to celebrate your child's progress. However, some appointments may fill more quickly as we prioritize students needing additional support. We also anticipate an increase in conference requests following the release of first-quarter grades, which may push available appointments into December or January. This is why I encourage families to schedule conferences proactively rather than waiting for the November 11 conference day or report cards.
Most importantly, please do not wait for a conference to communicate with your child's teachers. Throughout the school year, emailing teachers with specific questions or concerns is the quickest first step toward receiving direct feedback about your child's progress. Families may also schedule a conference with our school counselors, Ms. Colbert (elementary) or Ms. Reynolds (middle school).
Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership. Our goal is to make every conversation meaningful while ensuring our teachers can remain focused on what matters most: supporting student success!
Help Us Celebrate Our Teachers: Teacher of the Month! It's time to recognize another outstanding BDF educator! Each month, our school community has the opportunity to vote for our Teacher of the Month! The selected teacher receives a special designated parking space from the second Tuesday of the month through the second Tuesday of the following month. This is a small but meaningful way to recognize the dedication, hard work, and positive impact our teachers make every day. I encourage our families to participate and show some love to the educators who go above and beyond for our students. Let's make sure our teachers know how much they are appreciated! Cast your vote here: October Link
Important Calendar Reminder: Please remember that there will be NO SCHOOL for students on Friday, October 16. We encourage families to plan accordingly.
Let's Make It Another Great Week! As we begin another week, I want to thank each of you for the many ways you continue to support our school community. Whether you are participating in our book club, communicating with teachers, attending school events, or encouraging your child to show up each day ready to learn, your partnership makes a difference. As we continue to embrace our school year's mantra, let's remember that the work we do together matters. Every conversation, every act of kindness, every opportunity to grow, and every effort to support one another helps create the school community our children deserve.
Let's continue to lead with positivity, extend grace, maintain high expectations, and celebrate progress along the way. Together, we are building something special at BDF!
Wishing everyone a positive, productive, and purposeful week ahead!
October is National Principal's Month!
As a way to thank our AMAZING principal, Ms. Hogue, we are sharing a Padlet where families can post a note that we will share with Ms. Hogue at the end of the month. We are hoping to get at least one note from each family expressing your appreciation for her. Feel free to click the link below to get started to #ThankAPrincipal

MCAP Spring 2026 Individual Student Reports (ISRs)
On Friday, October 9, 2026, families should have received their students' Spring 2026 MCAP Reports. Our students in grades 4-8 received these reports, complete with a cover letter from Ms. Hogue (on pink paper) as well as a few documents that will help with understanding your student's scores. Hopefully your student shared the reports with you.
Our 4th, 5th, 7th, & 8th graders received a report for Math and ELA, while our 6th graders received a report for Math, ELA, and Science. If your student is new to BDF this year and does not come home with a set of reports, this typically means that we haven't received them from their previous school. Please be patient - as soon as we receive the reports, they will be sent home. If you find that your student is missing a report, it is likely because they did not sit for that assessment.
You can view the following documents ahead of time to help with understanding your child's score reports:
Once these reports come home, should you have any questions about the reports OR if you do not receive the reports, please reach out to Ms. Stefanak or your child's homeroom teacher.

βπ» Important Family Reminders βπ»
Arrival & Dismissal
Arrival
Parent Drop Off: Please follow the traffic pattern as to not negatively impact the buses coming in to the bus lanes.
Maintaining a steady routine is essential. While we understand emergencies happen, frequent or sudden changes can compromise a safe and smooth departure.
- Students arriving after 9:25 a.m. are considered βtardyβ. Late bus arrivals will receive a late bus tardy slip, while students being dropped off late by a parent or van service must be signed in by a parent/guardian at the main office.
Please do not call your child directly on their cell phone during the dayβthis violates the PGCPS/BDF Cell Phone Policy.
Dismissal
If an emergency occurs after your child has left home, please email their teacher(s), Ms. Halsey, and Ms. Holmesβ¦all email addresses can be found on the BDF website and on the bottom of this newsletter.- Any dismissal changes made after 2:00 p.m. will need grade level administrator notification.
- Changes after 3:00 pm, please email teachers, the grade level administrator and the front office team; additionally, a phone call is needed after the email.
- Early dismissal/sign-outs conclude at 3:30 p.mβ¦NO EXCEPTIONS.
Late Buses
Students will call if the bus has not arrived by 5:00 pm in order to inform you of the estimated arrival time.
Please do not change your childβs dismissal plan due to a late bus. If the bus arrives prior to a parent/guardian arrival, the student WILL be placed on the bus.
If your child rides a bus that typically arrives around 4:30ish pm and you have a scheduled activity, please plan their dismissal accordingly.
Dismissal Plan & Flash Pass
- If you haven't done so already, please be sure to complete the Dismissal Plan for each student and return it as soon as possible. This form dictates how your child gets home daily, and BDF staff will follow this plan strictly. Please lock in this plan before school starts and walk through it with your child. The first week is busy with new routines, and a clear plan ensures everyone gets home safely and quickly. .
- If there is a long-term change to your childβs dismissal plan, please contact Ms. Holmes for a new plan and return it to the main office.
- If you have a change the morning of, please let your child know before leaving home whenever possible.
- Each family should have received a Dismissal Flash Pass in the school mailer. For security, these will never be sent through digital means like email or ClassDojo. Each unique pass speeds up the process and presenting it means you won't need to fill out the sign-out sheet. Please keep the original safe and do not duplicate or share it. If a pass goes missing, see Ms. Halsey for a new one. Replacements must be collected in person at the school office.
Transportation & Bus Stops
Families who are still waiting for a permanent transportation assignment can check whether an eligible bus stop is available for their child:
Enter your home address and select your childβs school.
BusPlanner Web will identify the single closest eligible bus stop for that school.
Families may use an eligible stop identified through BusPlanner while they are waiting for a permanent transportation assignment to appear in ParentVUE and Chipmunk.
For some students, this may provide an immediate transportation option while PGCPS completes or corrects their permanent route. Families should continue to check ParentVUE and Chipmunk for updates to their permanent transportation assignment. For students who do not have an eligible stop available through BusPlanner Web, PGCPS will continue working directly with the affected family and school to identify available transportation options.
Families should not place a student on an alternate bus or route without receiving authorization from the school or transportation team.
π₯ Attendance Policy π₯
- Please be advised that Benjamin D. Foulois follows the PGCPS Attendance Policy AP 5113.
- After 3 absences within a quarter, whether or not consecutive, you will receive a βNotice of Concernβ.

- Letters are sent regardless of lawful or unlawful absences.
- Attendance is monitored by the BDF Staff and our Pupil Personnel Worker, Ms. D. Mayfield.
- Chronic absences: 4 in a quarter, 9 in a semester, and 18 in a year. Parents, please send a note or email within 3 days of your child returning to school.
