Winter Science Labs
Our science classes' exploration of thermal reactions and urinalysis provides invaluable practical experience for students. These labs go beyond textbook learning, fostering essential scientific skills.
Studying thermal reactions allows students to observe firsthand the principles of energy transfer and chemical change, developing their abilities in experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
The urinalysis lab offers a unique opportunity to apply scientific knowledge to a real-world context, introducing concepts related to human health and physiological processes. Both labs cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and the meticulous observation skills crucial for any aspiring scientist, while also demonstrating the relevance of science to everyday life. We wholeheartedly support these hands-on learning experiences that prepare our students for future success in STEM fields.

Public Schools Week February 24th - 28th
Join us in celebrating Public Schools Week!
Let's recognize the partnership public schools play in our communities by teaching skills and preparing our students for success to become citizens of our town.
Public schools are the heart of our neighborhoods, providing a quality education for all children. #HereForTheKids #theknightway #OneCommunity
Celebrate Black History Month with some local history information about our Dayse Baker School.
Miss Dayse Baker was born to enslaved parents. She and her family moved from Clarksville, Tennessee, to Farmington, where she attended elementary school. Since Farmington High School was not integrated, Dayse moved back to Clarksville, where she completed high school and college. Returning to Farmington in 1903 at age eighteen, Dayse began teaching at the local Douglas School, where she and one other teacher managed seventy-five black students. She retired from the Farmington School District in 1954, completing a teaching career that spanned fifty-four years. It was in 1954 that Miss Dayse pressed the issue of integration before the Board of Education by locking herself in the bathroom to pray. Miss Dayse helped raise college money for black students, helped many people in trouble, and cared for her family. She was honored by the Missouri House of Representatives and her fellow Farmingtonians. More information can be read about her achievements at the link below.
Special Edition with Nurse Anderson!
Dear FMS,
As your school nurse, I brought Frida along to talk to you about to stay healthy this month. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. So we wanted to talk to you about promoting good habits and adhering to regular visits to the dentist. These things will greatly help your children get a good start for lifelong well maintained and conditioned teeth and gums.
So this month Frida is here to talk to us also about pet dental health!
Howl-loooo everybody it is me Frida!
Yes thank you, Nurse Amber. I love my teeth! Because I use them for eating! I could not do that very well without my teeth and just like you all I get my grown up teeth and that's all I have for my life. I can't grow more so I must take care of them.
Did you know that students and pets both have to keep their teeth in good health?
I am only FOUR years old but that's paw-sibly about 28 years old in dog years.
Since I am older and wiser I know these things now. This is also very important to me because as a labrador retriever I love to eat and chew. I am pretty sure based on the number of pieces of gum I can see under the tables as I walk around the students here also like to do these things.
-Nurse Anderson & Frida
P.S. Shhhhh... it's a surprise
This month is a special day for my mom Officer Helton. It is National School Resource officer on the 15th of this month. (That is 3 days after the February full moon, (awwww-oooooo!) that is why I know these things like dates, in case you were wondering.)
Thank you for being a great School Resource Officer Mom Officer Helton!
We appreciate all you do to keep our students safe, to help them when they need help and care, and to encourage them to be good citizens. Your work is so very valuable and necessary in our schools!
February 15th is School Resource Officer Day

Hour of Code Activities
Check out some pictures from our Hour of Code activities in the library. Students got just a taste of what it is like to begin coding using Microbits. We combined art and technology to code and product pixel art and send our artwork to the microbits.
Watch the videos of student Microbits creations during Hour of Code!
Makerspace Extending STEM Skills in the Library
We have started a new semester beginning with the literal BUILDING BLOCKS of design thinking! We are using Keva Planks to explore beginning physics and engineering skills as well as creativity. Keva planks offer a powerful learning experience in the makerspace. Beyond the fun of building, they foster crucial STEM skills like problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and engineering design. Kids learn to test hypotheses, adapt to challenges, and collaborate to create complex structures. Keva planks transform abstract concepts into tangible realities, sparking creativity and a deeper understanding of physics and geometry in a hands-on, engaging way.
Beanstack Reading & Book Logging
We recognize these readers for reading and completing book reviews over Winter Break.
Check out this outstanding book review by 8th grade student Ava Miller for this YA Mystery, perfect for those 13+ readers.
Inheritance Games
by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Do puzzles and games fascinate you? If so, I suggest that you read The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. A book that highlights a girl with nothing that brings a family together by solving puzzles and riddles. Avery Grambs wants to finish high school with a scholarship in hand but everything changes when following his death billionaire Tobias Hawthorne leaves her his fortune. All Avery has to do is move into his mansion that to be learned is filled with secrets, puzzles, riddles, and passageways. The disinherited family living in the house includes four grandsons. Grayson Hawthorne thinks that Avery is a con woman; While his brother Jameson sees her as his grandfather’s last great puzzle. Avery will have to play the game if she wants to find answers. I rate this book a 4.5/5 and definitely recommend reading it.
Counselor Notes
Thank your Mrs. Walden and Mrs. Bays!
Join us in celebrating National School Counseling Week this February! School counselors are invaluable members of our educational community, providing essential support to students' academic, social, and emotional well-being. They're the listeners, the advocates, and the guides who help our kids navigate the challenges of school and life. Let's take a moment to recognize and appreciate the dedication and hard work of our school counselors. Thank you for all you do!
