Decatur Community,

Twas the week of Finals

And all through the town,

The students were studying questions

Like “adverb or noun?”.

Teachers preparing

Their last big exams,

Before they can focus

On turkeys and hams.

The excitement of a break

Only 5 sleeps away,

Dominates the minds

Of us each every day.

Will it be multiple choice

An essay or two,

Or even, perhaps,

A project to do?

There's one final moment,

An opportunity to show,

Everything that you’ve learned

Everything that you know.

Study real hard

And there's no reason for fearing,

Even a Final for Bricker

Or a Final for Gehring.

Parents and students,

I encourage, do your best,

Put all that you’ve got

Into one Final test.

I know the end

Is only five days away,

But finish it strong,

The Red Devil Way!

Shoutout to JH history teacher Mrs. Jenee Moore. There is never a doubt about what is going on in Mrs. Moore's classroom or what they are learning. Mrs. Moore is one of the most creative and organized teachers we have in the bulding, and her work is always on display. Whether students are studing counties in Kansas, learning about longitude and latitude during geography, or studying presidents, her class is always engaged and work is always visible in the halls, We are lucky to have her. This past week I was walking by her room and I couldn't help but notice how she had decorated her classroom door. Second shotout to freshman Bentley Sutherland (pictured) for staring through window.

Shoutout to Applied Math II teacher Mrs. Gina Witt. In her Applied Math II class, Mrs. Witt has really pushed her students to come up with ideas of small businesses that they could run in school. Last year it was homeade ice cream and this year it is flavored popcorn. This past Wednesday, Mrs. Witt took her students over to Norton to observe the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge where students came up with ideas for businesses and put them on display. We are hoping to bring a similar experience to Oberlin later in the spring.

Shoutout to math teachers Tessa Anderson and Wendy Scott. (Mrs. Witt has to coach on Monday) I could really go on and on about both of them for a variety of reasons but this week I want to mention that they are both going to an inservice in Sublette, KS. The title of this workshop that is limited to only 30 teachers in the State is:

Mathematics Standards Alignment Toolkit & Kansas Math Standards Unpacking.

In the past few years, the math department at DCHS has implemented intervention curriculum (IXL), created intervention classes for support (math labs), and adopted a new textbook after a thorough analysis of resources.

Shoutout to both the girls' and boys' basketball teams. This past week, both teams went 2-1 in the McCook Invitational. The boys ended up 3rd in the tournament and the girls were up at halftime of the championship game before losing a tough match to finish 2nd. Both teams have gotten off to a good start and shown the ability to compete with anyone they go up against. This week, we will look to two home games.

Shoutout to Ag. Teacher Jason Ketterl and His Students

Mr. Ketterl took his students to Hoxie to visit Bucklin Tractor & Implement Co. Mr. Ketterl is always looking at a variety of field trips to take his students on.

I also want to shoutout right back to BTI for the kind comments and post about our students that they put on their webpage.

Shoutout to the 8th Grade for Their Creative Tree

This year, each class created a Christmas tree. Each had their ups and downs, but I have really appreciated walking out of my office for the past few weeks and seeing Mariah Carey there to remind me that is the holiday season.

Shoutout to our Wrestling Team

Several members of the wrestling team placed at this past week's meets. The boys came away with a 4th place finish as a team at Ellis.

As we say goodbye to '24,

And hello to ‘25.
