A truly effective school principal operates as both the steady lighthouse and the heart of the community, balancing administrative demands with unwavering support for both educators and students. They are not simply managers, but visionary leaders who are visible in the hallways and classrooms, fostering a culture of trust rather than directive supervision. A great principal empowers their staff to be leaders, prioritizing collaborative relationships, listening deeply to the needs of the school community, and leading by example with a passion that ignites a positive, safe, and supportive environment. By prioritizing student achievement while nurturing the professional growth of their teachers, they transform the school into a place where everyone is empowered to reach their full potential. Above all, she is a leader who is fair, objective, and not biased, ensuring that every student and staff member is treated with equal respect and dignity.

Happy Principal Day to Dr. Rosalynn Gaskins, the pillar of a true Charter school! Your leadership perfectly mirrors the STEM-driven mission of CMIT North High School. You continue to foster analytical thinking, innovation, and a love for technology that guides our students toward a bright future in a globalized society.

MENTAL HEALTH MENTAL HEALTH

SEL Strategies | Reflect on Our Beliefs

When children are young, we react to behaviors like crying and shouting by attempting to figure out what needs they are attempting to communicate: the need for food when they're hungry, the need to be comforted when they are in pain, or the need to feel secure when they are afraid. As children get older, our curiosity about what children's behavior is communicating dwindles. If we are to have any chance of solving behavior problems, it might serve us well to operate under the principle that all behavior is an attempt to communicate a need. Children are typically not taught how to communicate their needs properly. When they respond to an emotional or physical need, they are told how not to respond rather than how to respond differently.

In addition to children's age, another factor that affects how we respond to children's behavior is our belief system. Our deeply rooted belief systems dictate how we view behavior, what we expect of children's behavior, and how we respond to their behavior. As we cope with the divide between our belief systems and those of children from different cultures, backgrounds, generations, and belief systems, we may need to reflect on our practice, grow in our understanding of our students and their families, and rethink our response to their behavior.

Today's SEL strategy is to commit to the following as we respond to our students' behavior during the final stretch of the school year:

  1. Challenge yourself to be more analytical about and less reactive to your students' behavior.

  2. Ask yourself, why are they responding with this behavior, what need are they trying to have met, or what is making them feel this way?

  3. Be open to consider the barriers that may be causing your student to be unsuccessful and be willing to do something to remove those barriers.

  4. Recognize that going against the culture of obedience is not a sign of weakness; instead, it is evidence of reflective thought and self-control.

  5. Give yourself permission to try something different to help your students improve and grow, even if it goes against what "mama always said."

Have a joyous Day!
