This school year is off to a busy start! Although we have only been in school a little over a month, our students have been working hard to get into school routines and have been busy learning every day. Mrs. Perlak and I have had the opportunity to visit students in their classes and to meet with teachers regularly to discuss student performance and plan so that we can continue to meet our students’ needs. I want to thank our families for sending students to school every day ready to learn with their needed supplies including a water bottle. As a reminder, our doors open every morning at 8:45. Students should not be dropped off at school before this time, as there is no adult supervision until 8:45. One additional reminder, although we love animals here at Grange, pets are not allowed on school property at any time during the school day including during arrival and dismissal. Thank you!

What is SEL or Social- Emotional Learning? What is SEL or Social- Emotional Learning?

This month we are focused on SEL. This stands for Social-Emotional Learning. Social-Emotional Learning is defined as the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The 3 BCPS social-emotional competencies include: Awareness; Decision Making; and Relationships. We want to share with you some of the activities and discussions that we will be holding during this month to implement a more self aware learning environment for your children. This can include in class discussions, activities, both in the home & at school, our virtual calming library for students, as well as a virtual field trip.

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ms. Cohen and I am the Multi- Tiered School Support Teacher (MTSS) at Grange. I have worked in Baltimore County for 21 years and have worked in the Dundalk community at Bear Creek and Sandy Plains. I am excited to be part of the Grange school family. I am focused on providing students with strategies and supports for social emotional and behavioral needs so they can spend the majority of their time in the classroom focused on learning.

Our school wide Virtues this month:

October 2nd – 13th Kindness: Doing something good to make someone’s life better.

Talk with your child about how he or she can be kind with their words and actions each day. Ask them who they showed kindness to during the day. Discuss the important of being kind and how we never know what someone else is going through or experiencing.

October 16th – 27th Self-discipline: Self-control, not losing control when feeling hurt or angry.

You can help your child develop self-discipline by providing a consistent routine before and after school, giving choice when you can, setting time limits (especially for phones and electronics), and creating consistent consequences. Help your child identify their feelings and to select calming strategies such as taking deep breaths and/or using a calm voice to tell someone what is bothering them.
