Ott's Outlook
March 2025
We are almost to the midpoint of the second semester of the school year as we move into the month of March, and it has been exciting to see the student growth taking place in classrooms across the district. Our students are engaged and focused on learning new concepts as we move closer to interim and end-of-year testing. With that growth in mind, I thought it would also be a good time to update you on another kind of growth taking place in Temple ISD.
The Board of Trustees received the results of the 2025 demographic study at the February meeting. As reported in the Temple Daily Telegram, Temple ISD continues to grow. This demographic report, along with our facilities master plan, can help provide a road map for TISD to prepare for and manage that growth through expansion of current facilities or construction of new facilities.
The newest demographic report shows 18 actively building subdivisions within Temple ISD, with groundwork currently underway on over 1,000 lots. There are 17 future subdivisions in various stages of planning within the district boundaries. Most of that growth is concentrated in three areas across Temple, the Northwest quadrant, the Northeast quadrant, and across the southern half of the district.
Our current enrollment is hovering around 8,800 students. Based on the existing growth we have already seen, along with the current housing construction and future planned subdivisions, our consultants expect Temple ISD enrollment to grow to nearly 9,500 students by 2029-2030, and to approximately 10,900 students by the 2034-2035 school year. Truth be told, Temple ISD has more homes being built within our school district than ever before. I see this myself as I drive around the school district. Those numbers would put at least one of our current campuses near or over capacity as early as the 2027-2028 school year with several other campuses reaching that point by the 2030-2031 school year.
The district has been planning for this growth and has already purchased land as possible sites for an additional middle school and another new elementary school. Temple ISD also addressed facility needs through the Bond 2022 package that funded the construction of Sampson-Howard Elementary School and expansions at several other campuses. There are projects currently underway to add additional classrooms at Bonham Middle School, Hector P. Garcia Elementary School, Kennedy-Powell Elementary School, Raye-Allen Elementary School, and Scott Elementary School. There is also room for expansion of current facilities within the existing footprint of Temple High School, Hector P. Garcia Elementary School, Kennedy-Powell Elementary School, Meridith-Dunbar Early Childhood Academy and Scott Elementary School.
The future expansion of Temple High School and Edwards Academy is a necessity and there are plans in place, and room to add classrooms to these existing campuses that will address and handle needs for growth among high school students.
The district is looking at several options for addressing the future growth and facility needs at the middle school and elementary school levels and I will be meeting with parents to gather feedback on their wishes as we plot the best course of action moving forward. As always, we want to provide the best learning experiences for our students and the best working environments for our teachers and staff, while continuing to be good stewards of our taxpayer dollars.
The district and the board take the responsibility of providing for our students very seriously and we appreciate the trust and support of our families and our community as we continue in this process. These are exciting times for Temple ISD, and I will continue to keep you informed as we keep on charging forward.
Sincerely,
Bobby Ott
