A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

Spring is around the corner, and we have many exciting events planned! We look forward to seeing our 2nd graders perform their musical on March 19th! We also have several field trips planned for March.

Registration for the 2024-2025 school year will open March 1st. It is imperative that you register your current student for next year. Also, if you or someone you know has a new student, please remember that no registration is complete until ALL documentation has been uploaded and submitted with the child’s registration. I know you may have questions about the K-6 transition and registration, so please reach out to me with any questions.

If I can ever be of assistance to you, please call, email, or stop by! GO FALCONS!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

Morning Drop-Off Reminders

Forest Hills Families,

After several incidents at morning drop-off that have put student safety at risk, I must remind you all of our morning drop off procedures. Our first and foremost duty is to keep our children safe.

  • Students should not get out of the car and walk into the building until staff are present at crosswalks. Traffic should not begin moving until staff are present at crosswalks.
  • Parents should not park in the middle of the parking lot and let students out. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and puts students at risk of being hit by a car. If you are late, you must park in a parking spot and walk your child into the office.

Please remember that instruction begins promptly each morning at 7:30 am meaning teachers are teaching and students are learning. We need every child at school and on time daily.

Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.

Kindergarten Screening Sign-Up Kindergarten Screening Sign-Up

Do you have an incoming Kindergartener? Kindergarten Screenings are an opportunity for us to see what your child knows, and what he/she needs to continue working on in kindergarten. This is not a formal evaluation, and it is not required, however, we encourage new students to participate.

Kindergarten

We are looking forward to March & Springtime in Kindergarten. All of the students are ready to show off their favorite book character in the parade on Friday, March 1st. Kindergarten will continue the theme of Dr. Seuss books and a love of reading in the first full week of March. We will get to take a field trip on March 7th to see "Seussical the Musical" & practice being a good audience to see the books we have read come to life on stage.

Our love of reading will continue as we are almost finished learning all letters and sounds. Now we are not only reading decodable words, but also decodable sentences with high frequency words too. Parents can help by practicing those high-frequency (sight) words at home & also listening to your child read.

In math we will be learning how to add and subtract within 10. Then we will learn how to solve addition and subtraction word problems. Parents can help by practicing adding and subtracting fluency facts at home with your child. The goal is to know all facts within 5 by the end of Kindergarten. (Ex. 1+3=4, 5-2=3, etc.)

1st Grade

In first grade we have been learning about cultures from around the world in our Open Court reading unit. Students are creating a country report at home that will be displayed in our hallways. We can't wait to learn about all the different cultures! We are working on our fluency goal of 45 words per minute. We are improving our writing skills by writing a 5 sentence paragraph- A topic sentence, 3 juicy detail sentences, and a closing sentence.

In math we will begin our study on place value of numbers to 99. We will continue to work on our fact fluency to 10. We are looking forward to some fun Spring holiday activities throughout the month.

2nd Grade

WOW- this school year is flying by! We cannot believe it is already March. This month we will begin a new unit in reading named "Plants and Animals". In math we will continue to work on measurement and geometry. Second graders have been working hard on their writing and just completed a narrative piece about their future self. They have also been practicing typing their written responses to prepare for ACAP coming up in April.

We are looking forward to our spring field trip on Friday, March 8th. We will visit the Shoals Theatre to see "Seussical the Musical" and will eat a picnic lunch at Cox Creek park. Parents are welcome to meet us at the park for lunch.

The second grade musical family performance will be Tuesday, March 19th at 6 pm. Please make plans to attend!

3rd Grade

Third graders have been very busy this past month. On February 8th, we enjoyed going to Florence High School for the Liberty Legacy program. Here, students learned facts about the Statue of Liberty and what it means to be a good citizen. We will return to Florence High School on April 2nd to have our closing ceremony and honor a hero from our school. Stay tuned to see who we celebrate.
In Math students have just finished learning about fractions. We will be discussing time, liquid volume, and mass in the coming weeks. Don’t forget to keep practicing those multiplication facts!
In Reading we will be closing out Unit 3 which was all about A Changing Nation. We are looking forward to starting Unit 4, Animals and Their Habitats!! Please remember to have your child read their fluency passage three times a week.
On Thursday, March 7th we will be going to the Shoals Theatre to see Seussical and then we will continue on to Deibert Park for lunch and play!

4th Grade

March means it's Montgomery Field Trip time for our 4th graders! We have a short parent meeting Tuesday, March 5th at 3:30 in the cafeteria to give important information. Our trip is Monday, March 18th. In 4th grade, students are taught Alabama History so this trip is a great learning experience to go along with our standards.

Science lately has been electrifying...literally! Students have had a lot of fun building circuits and learning about electricity as well as other types of energy.

In Math, we will begin learning about decimals...naming, writing, comparing, adding, and subtracting decimals. Soon after we will get into our geometry and measurement unit to finish preparing us for the Math ACAP in April.

We are finishing up a reading unit on stories of our heritage and history. The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about other cultures. We will soon be starting a new unit involving science stories about animal adaptations.

Forest Hills Student Council

During the month of March, the Forest Hills student council will be sponsoring a coin drive, “Pennies for Pets.” Please send in coins with your child so they can add them to their classroom coin jar. We will collect money March 4th-21st. The student council has set a goal to raise $250 for the Lauderdale County Animal Shelter. Thank you for helping us reach our goal.
