CHSNEWSLETTERApril 2019 Issue 4

A Word from the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I’m getting older. How do I know this, other than my thinning hair daily reminder? I have a newfound fondness for birdwatching, wearing comfortable sweaters (think The Big Lebowski style), using toothpicks after meals, and having recently changed my fitness philosophy to focus on longevity health and wellness. While these are somewhat recent developments, it is not like this transformation took place overnight, though when I stop to think about it, it can seem that way.

Why do I tell you this? Because I see similar change happening with the members of our senior class. By the time this letter gets to you, our seniors will have approximately 30 school days left of their formal public education. They are in the twilight of their Clarkston Schools experience...senior citizens of CHS, if you will. I also see parallels between my experience and their experience. They seem a little more comfortable with themselves and around others. Yes, they worry about what will be next for them as they speed toward this new life transition, but with that worry, comes comfort through experience. Many of the trivial matters that bothered and confused them (and by proxy you) over the last few years, begin to melt away. Their importance doesn’t seem so paramount. Now, I am not saying you will wake up Saturday to see your son or daughter wistfully looking out the window at the nearest tree to spot a Cedar Waxwing, sipping a cup of coffee with Nescafe’, whilst wearing a wool cardigan, but if you pay attention, you might find that they are becoming a bit less like the “high schooler” you have come to know and a bit more of the adult they are fast becoming. At CHS, we embrace this time with them. They are morphing from students into our compatriots through shared experience. This is a great time to be a parent and one of transition for you as well. Please embrace it, and them. We certainly are, particularly as we get to spend a few more weeks with them. For those of you who have juniors and sophomores, I have no advice...keep up the good fight. Their transformation will be here before you know it!

Sincerely,

Gary L. Kaul

Principal

SENIORS WHO NEED THEIR FINAL TRANSCRIPT SENT TO COLLEGES/NCAA, ETC.

If a college requests your final transcript (and most do), you must submit a request online via the Parchment system. Do not assume this will automatically be done for you!

When requesting final transcripts to be sent to colleges, grades will be updated ASAP after school is out for students. This can be up to two weeks after school is out (end of June). You will need to submit a brand new request. Requests can (and should) be made in Parchment now, but students must check the "Hold for Grades" option to make sure that 2nd semester grades are included.

SENIORS WHO ARE COMPLETING CREDIT RECOVERY FOR GRADUATION

Seniors who are finishing up credit recovery outside of school (including online classes); in order to participate in the graduation ceremony at DTE on June 3rd, CHS needs to have written verification of courses completed and final grades by Monday, May 20th.

SENIOR SURVEY INFO

Each year we are required by the State of Michigan to report the post-high school plans for all seniors. All seniors will be sent a link to survey through their school email address on April 17, 2019. Each senior must complete this survey in order to pick up their cap and gown on the morning of the senior walk.

SENIOR AWARDS NIGHT

Clarkston High School is pleased to host the Senior Awards Program in the Performing Arts Center on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. Seniors from the Class of 2019 will be recognized for their accomplishments in one or more areas of academic excellence and scholarships will be awarded. On behalf of the CHS staff, we congratulate you and your student. If your student has a 3.5 or better we invite you, your son/daughter, family members and friends to attend this program as we honor him /her in a celebration of achievements. Eligible students have already received an invitation by mail. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Browne in the Principal's Office @ 248-623-3541. There will be a rehearsal for the students the morning of May 2 at 7:00 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center. This rehearsal is MANDATORY for all seniors who plan to attend Senior Awards Night. If your student has a conflict with our rehearsal time please contact Ms. Julie Krzciok via email at : jmkrzciok@clarkston.k12.mi.us.

"FUTURE SENIORS"MEETINGS

Counselors will be meeting with juniors on Thursday, May 30th during 5th & 6th hours to hold "Future Seniors" meetings. During these meetings, counselors will discuss everything that juniors need to know to get ready for their senior year, including: the college application process/timeline, how to send SAT/ACT scores to colleges, different "types" of admissions, application essays, how to send transcripts to colleges, how to request letters of recommendation, financial aid, scholarships, etc.

Parents: Be sure to ask your student about their "Summer to Do" list and help them prepare for applying to colleges next fall.

BOYS/GIRLS STATE

The Michigan Boys State and Girls State is a National Civics Leadership program that offers a week-long conference that shapes a lifetime! The American Legion and the Women's Auxiliary will be reviewing applications and sponsor junior-class applicants from the Clarkston area to attend the June 16-22, 2019 conference. Information and applications are available in the Counseling Office, or you may contact Shannon Carolin at skcarolin@clarkston.k12.mi.us. More information also available at: http://youtu.be/LI6RUYU- 8.

ATTENTION JUNIOR & SOPHOMORE PARENTS

Don't wait until senior year to get ready for college. The spring is a great time to check out colleges:

  • Look up school websites - What are the admission requirements? What kind of scholarship do they offer?
  • Visit schools - It's not freezing out any more and classes are still in session, so you can see what the campus is really like when it's busy. If you wait until summer, you might be visiting a ghost town!
  • Talk to admission reps - They'l help to answer any questions you have.
  • We will have over 50 college reps visiting CHS in the fall, so encourage your students to sign up to speak with the admissions rep from the colleges that they are interested in. Students should listen for announcements or check the CHS Counseling website for dates/times of visits in the fall.

FINALIZING STUDENT SCHEDULES FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

Counselors are currently working on finalizing student schedules for the 2019-2020 school year. The only changes that will be made to student schedules in the fall are those changes that need to be made due to a student failure. Students who are behind in overall credit or fail a class for graduation are highly encouraged to enroll in summer school to recover the credit(s). Students should meet with their counselor prior to enrolling in summer school to make sure they are registering for the correct class.

SUMMER SCHOOL INFORMATION

Summer School information will be available in mid-May for sophomores and juniors who need to recover credits during the summer. Make an appointment to see your counselor at that time for more information.

TEST OUT INFORMATION

Students interested in testing out in August 2019 must turn in a completed Test Out form and $10 deposit to the CHS Counseling Office no later than Friday, June 7th. Details on the Test Out process and forms can be found in the CHS Counseling Office and on the CHS Counseling website.

AP TEST DAY INFORMATION

  • Advanced Placement Tests will be administered the weeks of May 6-10 and May 13-17. Be sure to mark your calendar for the correct test date, location, and exam time, all of which will be emailed to you prior to testing. If you have any questions, please reach Miss Carolin at skcarolin@clarkston.k12.mi.is.
  • Tests will be administered at St. Trinity Church in Clarkston, NOT Clarkston HIgh School, unless specified.
  • Morning exams start promptly at 8:00 a.m., so please be to your testing location no later than 7:45 a.m. Afternoon exams begin promptly at 12:00 p.m., so please be at your testing location no later than 11:45 a.m. Students who arrive late or at the wrong location will forfeit their exam, as well as their exam fees.
  • St. Trinity Lutheran Church is located at 7925 Sashabaw Road, just north of Clarkston Road. Parking is located behind the building, and students must drive slowly in and out of the parking lot as there is a daycare located on the side of this building. Please be mindful that we are guests in this facility.
  • Alternate testing sites, which will be specified personally to students, may be held at the Clarkston Community Schools Board Office, located at 6389 Clarkston Road. Enter at the front entrance and you will be directed to the designated testing room.
  • Please refer to Page 5 of your "Bulletin for AP students and Parents 2018-2019" for a list of 'what to bring' and 'what NOT to bring' to the exam room. Bulletins will be distributed to students in April.
  • If you are taking two exams in one day (a morning and afternoon exam), you will want to pack a lunch or snack to eat between exam sessions. You will not have time to leave and go out to lunch and make it back to the testing center before your next exam. Plan ahead!

Kacha wowed the students with his relentless energy, sharp mind, and ideas that know no bounds. He also presented marketing strategies that cross platforms, and discussed how they connect the creative marketing aspects with the business’s goals. Students were given some great real-life insight into the world of marketing by having such a great guest speaker to talk and answer their questions.

CHS Cares About the Wellness of Our Students

Wellness is described by the World Health Organization as a state of “complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease ....” Mental and emotional health is a cornerstone of wellness. Statistically, we know that 1 in 5 people (including adolescents) will struggle with some form of mental health condition. At CHS, we will be providing information about common mental health conditions impacting teens, such as anxiety and depression, to interested students in the months of April and May (exact dates to be determined) during all lunches in the LGI. We will also talk about strategies on how to make things better. If your child is interested, tell them to watch for details in the school announcements and to bring their lunch, bring a friend, and check it out!
