PTA ACTION ALERT - PROTECT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
A bill called the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) was recently introduced in Congress. The bill would create the first ever nationalized voucher system, redirecting billions of taxpayer dollars away from public schools towards private and religious institutions and homeschooling.
The National PTA encourages families to contact your members of Congress, urging them to oppose ECCA.

MARCH IS READING MONTH Sun, Sand, and a Book in Hand!
Once again this year, we are giving our Wixom Wolves a March is Reading Month Reading
Challenge. If our students and staff read a total of 300,000 minutes at home during the month
of March, they will earn an afternoon at the “beach” (bring a beach towel and read outside
with your class on a beautiful, sunny afternoon- with popsicles!)
Last March our Wixom students read over 280,000 minutes, so we decided to really
challenge our students by asking them to read 300,000 minutes this year and we know they can
do it! The students are excited to get started on their reading to meet the challenge.
Here’s what parents and guardians can do to help their child be successful in our March is
Reading Month Challenge:
● Set aside a time for your child to read at home every day during the month of March.
○ Students in preschool, kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade should read at least 20
minutes per day at home.
○ Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade should read at least 30 minutes per day at
home.
● Adults may read aloud to their child, a child may read aloud to their parents or other family
members, or a child may read silently to themselves.
○ Some families enjoy reading aloud together by having the child read one page, then
the adult reads the next page, and so on.
○ Some of the time parents may wish to read aloud to their child from a book that is
above their child’s reading level. This is a great way to build your child’s listening
comprehension and vocabulary.
● Each day you will enter the number of minutes that your child spent reading on the
Reading Log (attached). At the end of each week, please fill in the total number of minutes
read for the week and initial the total.
● Send your child’s Reading Log to school each Monday in March so your child’s teacher can
add it to the school total. We will record the minutes read and send the log right back to
you. We will keep track of the total number of minutes read on the front bulletin board at
school.
We hope you encourage your child to do lots of at-home reading during the month of
March. With everyone’s participation, we will get to enjoy an afternoon at the “beach”!
Wix is coming to Wixom
- For approximately the first two weeks, Wix will attend school part time, which can be half days or 2-3 non-consecutive days per week.
- The leash remains on the therapy dog while visiting classrooms.
- During the introduction to school, Wix will always remain with the handler (Christina). The crate will be in the room during this time.
- Wix can walk to the office and in the halls on a leash with the handler. Students may wave as you pass by, but not pet during this time. Walking to FAPEs is a great time for Wix to practice walking on a leash in the halls and seeing others.
- At least half of the time at school, Wix will be in the crate.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Wixom Elementary! Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Book Fair benefits our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the big event:
Students will get a chance to preview the Book Fair during their Media time on Friday, March 14th and Monday, March 17th.
Students will be able to shop at the Book Fair when their class signs up during the school day from March 18th through March 21st and during their lunch recess time.
Like any activity we host, we need parent volunteers to help run our book fair. Please use this to sign up to help with the Book Fair. We can't do this without parent volunteers!

If you choose not to send cash, you can set up an eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Book Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school.

Thank you as always for your continued support of our school!
Wix Update!
Wix had his very normal, routine puppy surgery on Monday, February 24th. He is healing well and recuperating at his home with the Van Til Family. He will be taking a break from working at school until he is fully recovered, which will take about two weeks. Thank you to Roadside Veterinary Clinic in Highland for sponsoring Wix's care! If you are looking for a new family vet or if you already go to Roadside, be sure to tell them Thank You for taking such good care of Wix!
