Featured Story: Welcome Back, Shorians!
New Year. New Beginnings. Same Shorian Spirit.
There are no limits—only the ones we place on our minds.
On September 8th, we kicked off the 2026–27 school year with a warm Shorian welcome! Our schools came alive with enthusiastic greetings, thoughtfully prepared classrooms, and plenty of chances for students to connect with their learning communities.
The first day was full of energy and excitement—perfect for capturing unforgettable memories!
Shorian Back-to-School Checklist:
- A strong start to #myLSPSFirstDay
- Connected with fellow Shorians
- Ready to make 2026/27 an amazing year
Mrs. Dzurisin is back at Rodgers Elementary! After 27 years of service to Lake Shore, Mrs. Dzurisin retired, took a six-month break…and now she’s back filling in as a long-term substitute! On her first day, she welcomed students with the reading of First Day Jitters, some Jitter Juice, and plenty of excitement for the year ahead.
Addisun Argue, a 5th grader in Mrs. Husek’s class at Violet Elementary, is excited about the new school year, getting to know her teacher and meeting new friends. In fact, she loves elementary school so much she says she wants to stay in elementary forever!
And then there’s her classmate Louis Iaderaia, who summed up his outlook perfectly: “I’m happy about everything because that’s just my personality.”
Meanwhile, Alexis Flonta, an 11th grader at Lake Shore High, is looking forward to all the fun that comes with a new school year—Homecoming, football, dances and spending time with friends!
Different ages. Different reasons to be excited. But one thing connects them all: the joy of being a Shorian.
Whether it was your very first day or your final first day, we wish you a fantastic year ahead, Shorians!
Bonus Shoutout: A big thank you for the joyful Chalk Cheer messages! Your colorful words of encouragement made our welcome extra special.

Live performances from LSPS Bands & Choirs (1–4 PM).
A More Focused School Day Starts This Fall
In accordance with state law, beginning with the 2026-27 school year, Lake Shore Public Schools will implement a phone-free school day at all Lake Shore Public Schools.
Under the revised policy, personal communication devices, including cell phones, must be turned off or silenced and kept out of sight throughout the school day—including during passing time and lunch unless an approved exemption applies.
This change is designed to create more focused learning environments, strengthen student engagement, encourage meaningful peer interactions, and support student well-being throughout the school day.
We look forward to the positive impact this initiative will have on teaching, learning, and school culture across Lake Shore Public Schools.
For a copy of the new policy, visit https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/common/pages/GetFile.ashx?key=wESVAaq6.

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. All monthly themes are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines 1 character strengths per month. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.
As we enter into our first month of highlighting our #OtherPeopleMatter mindset within the Positivity Project, we can't think of a better example than introducing New Shorian Faces, a collection of miniature biographies that help our Shorian Nation learn more about the new-ish hires in our district.
Celebrating Two Emerging Educators!
Congratulations to Morgan Clausen and Allisyn Melcher, who were recently honored through the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) Emerging Educators Program!
Morgan is a proud Lake Shore High School Class of 2022 graduate and both Morgan and Allisyn recently graduated from Oakland University in 2026.
Even more exciting, Morgan and Allisyn will begin their teaching careers together at Violet Elementary this school year!
We are so proud to welcome these two talented emerging educators to the Shorian Nation and can't wait to see the impact they make on some of our youngest learners.
Stay Safe
OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
It Takes a Village to Grow a Shorian!
Big smiles and little backpacks! GSRP preschoolers kicked off their first day of school at the Shorian Early Childhood Center, ready to explore, play, and learn.
Preschoolers are growing fast — and so are their brains!
By age 5, your child’s brain is 90% developed. At this stage, they’re becoming more curious, independent, and ready to explore the world around them.
Your support is key to helping them feel safe and ready for school.
- Keep a daily routine
- Make time for play
- Read, talk, and listen
- Stay up-to-date on checkups
As part of the Pre-K for All program requirements, our lead and associate teachers make home visits before school even begins—creating an opportunity to meet children and families right where they are most comfortable: at home.
It’s a simple but incredibly meaningful way to build relationships. Teachers get to know each child on their own level, learn more about their interests and personalities, and begin creating the trust that helps children feel safe, welcomed and ready to learn.
And these visits aren’t limited to one neighborhood. Our teachers travel throughout Macomb County, meeting families and preparing to serve each child to the fullest capacity.
Another cool component of our Pre-K program? Mealtime is about so much more than eating!
All meals are served family style, giving students opportunities to:
- Serve themselves and practice independence
- Make choices and build confidence
- Engage in reciprocal conversations with teachers and classmates
- Practice social skills and learn how to be part of a community
These everyday moments are intentional learning opportunities—and they help our youngest Shorians grow in ways that go far beyond the classroom.
This year, our Pre-K for All program is serving 140 students, with our ECC students bringing the total enrollment to nearly 200 young learners.
From home visits to family-style meals, we’re creating connections, building independence and helping our youngest learners feel that they belong from the very beginning.
Because learning starts with relationships.
Lending a Hand and Some Muscles!
Forty members of our soccer and trap teams volunteered their muscles at Veterans Memorial Park to help prepare for the 38th Annual Lac Ste. Clair Fine Art Show.
Moving picnic tables is no small task, but our Shorians tackled the job with teamwork, positive attitudes and plenty of smiles!
Sara Melby, Entrance Chairperson, and Liz Munger, Co-Executive Director (and an incredible Lake Shore Board of Education member) warmly welcomed our students and shared just how much their help was appreciated.
Volunteerism is about more than lending a hand. It’s about showing up for your community, working together and making a difference — one picnic table at a time.
We’re proud of our Shorians for giving their time, energy and muscles to support a wonderful community tradition!
🎯 Remember those selfless Shorian trap team members who spent Friday helping move picnic tables at Memorial Park?
Well…we think a little good karma came their way over the weekend! ❤️🖤
Despite a constant rainstorm, 10 Shorians showed up to compete in the Michigan Trap Shooting Association’s Fall Brawl, bringing together youth teams from the USA High School Clay Target League, Scholastic Clay Target Program and ATA’s AIM Program.
And our team had an AMAZING day! 👏
🎯 Nathan Larivee posted the team’s highest score with a 96/100, including a 25-straight.
🎯 Emily Hubbard shot a personal best 90/100, including an impressive 47 on her first half with a 24.
🎯 Albert Lesko, one of our 7th graders, also shot a personal best 90/100!
🎯 Kaylee Gross and Matt Froias each shot their first 25 straight!
And there was even more to celebrate:
🏅 Lauren Bonser — 3rd Place, Class B — 86
🏅 Louis Gross — Class A Champion — 91
🏅 Aaralyn Goode-Hitch — High Female Senior — 87
🏆 Team Class A Champion — 451
We haven’t competed in an MTA shoot since 2022, so this was a great experience for our team — even if Mother Nature decided to join us for the day. ☔️😂
Rain-soaked? Absolutely.
Proud? 100%.
And those Friday volunteers? Looks like their kindness paid off. ❤️🖤
Innovation
Behind the Bell: The Heart & Hustle Behind a Shorian Welcome
What goes into getting our schools ready for your children?
The answer: countless thoughtful hours, careful planning, and a whole lot of heart.
Before the first bell rings, our staff works behind the scenes to make sure classrooms and schools are ready to welcome every student.
But preparing a classroom is about more than checking items off a list. It’s about creating a space where students feel welcomed, comfortable, and ready to learn.
From personalized greetings—an air hug, wave, or thumbs-up —to “getting to know you” activities and special surprises waiting at each desk, our teachers thoughtfully prepared every detail.
Bulletin boards, digital displays, folders, books, and Positivity Project (P2) visuals were all arranged with purpose and care. Some might even say our teachers added interior designer to their list of talents!
Construction projects are ongoing and/or completed, and exciting bond-funded improvements are taking shape across the district to enhance learning environments for students, staff, and our community.
Projects include:
Lake Shore High School
• Installation of a new artificial turf football field
• Resurfacing of the running track
• Softball complex upgrades, including artificial turf, new dugouts, pavilion, and bleachers
Kennedy Middle School
• Baseball field enhancements featuring artificial turf, new dugouts, pavilion, and grandstands
• Construction of a new 1/8-mile running track
• Main office carpeting and courtyard improvements
Violet Elementary School
• New main office addition
• Courtyard enhancements
Masonic Heights Elementary School
• Main office carpeting updates
• Courtyard improvements
• Gym HVAC upgrades
Parent-Student Handbooks are also available!
Be sure to review important information, including:
- Contact Information
- School Guidelines
- Policies & Expectations
- Student Code of Conduct
These resources help us work together to create a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment for every Shorian.
Thank you to our incredible staff for all the time, care, and heart you put into preparing for our students. Here’s to an amazing school year, Shorian Nation!
Happy 239th Anniversary to "We, the People"!
Constitution and Citizenship Day commemorates the day the US Constitution was signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787 and honors all who have become citizens. From classroom to classroom, teachers at Lake Shore highlighted the importance of this day.
Creating a Classroom Constitution!
In Mrs. Couck’s 2nd grade classroom at Masonic Heights Elementary, students are learning that a strong classroom community starts with the promises we make to one another.
Together, the students created their own classroom constitution—a list of expectations and promises they believe will help make their classroom a kind, respectful and welcoming place.
Each student contributed an idea and then proudly signed the constitution, promising to do their part to uphold the actions they created together.
For Charlotte Johnson, that promise is simple: use our manners. It’s something she already practices at home with her siblings.
Frank Bologna believes kindness is important, especially when it means helping others—whether that’s helping with schoolwork, holding the door open or giving someone a smile when they’re having a tough day.
These Shorians are already learning an important lesson: when everyone does their part, everyone feels like they belong.
World Geography + a Little Acting!
In Mrs. Gough’s World Geography class, 6th graders from Kennedy Middle School were divided into groups and each group was assigned a different amendment. With just a short amount of time to prepare, students worked together to discuss their amendment, figure out what it meant, and then bring it to life through a skit for their classmates.
The ultimate goal? Get their classmates to guess which amendment they were assigned!
A fun way to turn learning into teamwork, creativity and a little friendly competition!
Learning About the Constitution!
In Mrs. Welsh’s Government class, upperclassmen at Lake Shore High School used their Chromebooks to complete an EdPuzzle focused on the U.S. Constitution. After completing the activity, students came together as a class to discuss their findings, share their thoughts, and deepen their understanding of the document that serves as the foundation of our government.
Learning the Constitution isn’t just about memorizing facts. It’s about understanding the principles that shape our government and our rights.

Senior Sunrise
Senior Sunrise is such a great opportunity for our seniors to come together, make memories, celebrate the year ahead, and enjoy one of those special moments they’ll remember long after graduation.
And what a turnout! 110+ students from the Class of 2027 showed up to welcome their senior year together. Thanks for giving our Spirit Rock a fresh new look!
Liliauna Crank-Smith, Braylon Hempstead, and Danniah Hollingsworth are ready to make the most of their senior year!
Liliauna is especially excited for prom—from dreaming up her perfect dress to getting dressed up and making memories with her friends.
Braylon has one goal for his senior year: straight A’s.
Every year, he’s improved. Every year, he’s challenged himself to do better. And now, as a senior, he’s putting his focus in the right place and setting his sights even higher.
It’s not just about the grades—it’s about the growth, the perseverance, and deciding that you’re capable of more.
Danniah is simply excited to graduate!
And honestly, she’s already looking ahead to what comes next. After graduation, she’s heading to Ferris State University to pursue a degree in business.
For all of them, senior year is all about enjoying the moments, celebrating together, and making memories with the people who have been part of her journey.
Here’s to making the most of every moment, Class of 2027!
