Self Control
The thing that is tricky about self-control is that it is easier to talk about than to practice (and model!). Every time you lose your temper, you're missing an opportunity for self-control. When you skip out on your workout routine that you've said you need to do, you are missing an opportunity to model self-control. But more importantly, when we make a mistake and fall short of self-control, one big part that we also miss is admitting to our kids that we made a mistake. Showing self-control doesn't mean you never slip up or make mistakes. It means you learn to admit your mistake and make amends.
Questions to consider:
• Do you consider yourself to be a person with a fair amount of self-control? Why or why not?
• How can I "teach" self-control to my teen?
• In what ways do I allow my child to practice self-control?
Questions to ask your child:
• Who do you know that has lots of self-control? How do they demonstrate self control?
• What does self-control look like for a teenager?
• How can our family support you when it is hard for you to maintain your self control?

Attendance Matters
New attendance process
Email for attendance: wiggs_notes@episd.org
Frequently Asked Questions
My student was or will be absent from school. What should I do?
Parent/Guardian needs to submit documentation upon the student’s return (No more than 5 days after absence has taken place). The campus will update attendance records based on the documentation provided using the campus QR Code, handwritten note, or other written documentation.
Note: Phone calls are not required to report an absence in advance, the day of, or the day after the absence took place. Phone calls will no longer be counted as documentation. If a student has established a questionable pattern of absences, the Principal may require that a student present a physician’s or clinic’s statement of illness after a single day’s absence as a condition of classifying the absence as one for which there are extenuating circumstances.
How does the district notify families regarding absences?
Parents and guardian are notified of absences through:
· EPISD Parent Portal: Frontline Self-Serve
· Apptegy robo-phone call/email/text
· School Progress Reports
· Report Cards
· Notice of Absence Letters (indicates 3 or more unexcused absences)
Review your student’s attendance record. As soon as you notice a problem or if you do not recognize the absence dates listed, please contact your campus attendance clerk immediately. Unexcused absences can lead to a variety of issues including a referral to Truancy Court.
I sent in an attendance note. Why did I still receive a phone call/email/letter about my student’s attendance?
Attendance notifications are from an automated system. Every attendance note is manually entered. Attendance changes may not appear immediately in the student’s attendance history. If you have not submitted documentation, please use it as a reminder to send it in as soon as possible.
What type of absences DO NOT count against my student’s attendance?
- School field trip
- University Interscholastic League (UIL)
- Observing religious holy days under TEC 25.087. Travel is limited to no more than one day of travel to and one day of travel from the observation site. Church retreats, camps, and missions’ trips, and individual religious rites (Baptisms, Christenings, etc.) are not holy days.
- Temporarily absent during the school day because of a documented appointment for the student, with a healthcare professional. The professional is licensed, certified or registered by an appropriate agency of the State of Texas. The student begins classes or returns to school the same day of the appointment.
- Appearing at a governmental office to complete paperwork required in connection with the student’s application for US citizenship or taking part in a US naturalization oath ceremony
- Participation in activities related to Child Protection Services or the Juvenile Justice System
What type of absences DO count against my student’s attendance?
· Vacations
· Parent/Guardian illness notes
· Attendance at non-school sponsored events
Note: After 7 absences with home notes, it is at the discretion of administration whether or not to excuse additional home notes.
