Catch-A-Calf Experience
by Kate Maricle
National Western Stock Show’s Catch-A-Calf program was one of, if not the most beneficial agricultural opportunity I have had. During the Catch-A-Calf program, I had to keep several different records, such as weight and feeding conversions. This record book taught me many new skills about how to feed cattle more efficiently. Beyond the records, there were several other portions of the contest, which included showmanship, live placing, interview, sponsor relations, and beef production. Catch-A-Calf was a very in depth contest giving a closer look into the real-life beef industry.
I would recommend everyone do the Boone County Calf Roundup. It will give exhibitors a way to merge the show industry with real-life production. The roundup will be a simple way to get into the beef industry without having previous experience. 4-H is an incredible program in general, and I personally think that this program will be one of the most beneficial for exhibitors.
