Monochromatic triangle design
zoom_out_map

Artists started off the year talking about / reviewing art class expectations, and touring the art room. We also created monochromatic triangles, using different shades of one color, which were then glued together to make hexagons that highlight visual and thematic connections across their designs. These hexagons will create a tessellation mural that will be on display in the Art Gallery outside the art room. The mural is currently in progress and will be up throughout the school year.

We are now learning about line, which we will explore through a variety of different materials and experiences this fall.

  • Kindergarten is drawing different kinds of lines with oil pastel and adding paint to create a resist artwork.
  • 1st Grade is drawing as many different lines they can think of in the 100 line challenge.
  • 2nd Grade is painting a variety of different lines using watercolor paint.
  • 3rd Grade is creating line landscape resist paintings with patterns using oil pastel and watercolor paint.
  • 4th Grade is exploring contour line drawing through a blind and sight contour line drawing exercise.
  • 5th Grade started their radial symmetry name designs, using the letters in their name to form their radially symmetrical design.

We the Digital Citizens! (K-5 )

Hosmer students are all learning about what it means to be good digital citizens. When using the internet, safety is paramount. Together, we explore scenarios that pose a risk, and discuss solutions to ensure our safety and enjoyment of this vast resource. In addition, we are learning how respect we establish in the classroom should mirror the respect which we extend to others online. The lessons on digital citizenship vary in depth and topic from Kindergarten through Grade Five. The following are the goals which guide us:

Kindergarten- I am learning to understand the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful online.

First Grade- I am understanding the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful online.

Second Grade- I am learning to understand that being a good digital citizen means being safe and responsible online.

Third Grade- I can identify my in-person and online responsibilities as a way to think about how my behavior affects me.

Grade Four- I can differentiate between personal and private information.

Fifth Grade- I am integrating what I have learned about responsible device use into my everyday habits.

Physical Education with Mrs. Bartlett & Mrs. Fitzgerald Physical Education with Mrs. Bartlett & Mrs. Fitzgerald

Beginning in September, all grade levels went over physical education expectations with a strong focus on respect, cooperation, listening skills and conflict resolution. We also introduced and reviewed some yoga poses to the students as we use these for our stretching portion of class. The students participated in numerous activities to reinforce these skills.

In grades 3-5, students worked on conflict resolution by participating in a Rock, Paper, Scissors Tag. This activity reinforced the use of rock, paper, scissors in an event of a conflict. It is a quick easy and effective way to solve a disagreement at this age. We did a review of ways to demonstrate sportsmanship (fist bump, high five, etc.) with an activity called Sportsmanship Tag.

After reviewing the conflict resolution skills and sportsmanship, we are now moving into our cooperative games unit. The students have participated in an activity called Cross the River where they have to get from one side of the gym to the other, but only using the equipment that is provided to them. This has been a blast and the students are so creative with their use of equipment.

In grades K-2, students have been working on listening and following directions in PE. We have reviewed to moving with the music is on and then stop, look, and listen when the music is turned off. The students also participated in Red Light, Green Light, to reinforce the skill of listening.

We are now moving into our spatial awareness unit where the students learn about personal and general space, as well, as boundaries! We have numerous activities that we use to teach these skills. We are keeping the students moving!

In 2nd grade, we have introduced some conflict resolution skills and sportsmanship and have participated in a modified version of the activities we have been doing with the older students.

It has been a great start to the year!

Spanish with Señora Navas y Señorita O Spanish with Señora Navas y Señorita O

¡Feliz septiembre! Welcome back to school!

Hosmer Spanish teachers:

  • Robyn Long-Navas (Señora Navas) robyn.longnavas@watertown.k12.ma.us
  • Heather Olafsson (Señorita O) heather.olafsson@watertown.k12.ma.us

General Information about our program:

  • Across all grades, we have been practicing school routines and expectations in Spanish and getting to know each other en español.
  • Students have Spanish class for 30 minutes every other school day. Students are immersed in the Spanish language through stories, songs, movement, and other engaging activities so that they can use and interact with the language in a relaxed and fun environment. Classes are taught using primarily Spanish, supported by visuals, body language, etc. and students engage in turn and talk consistently throughout the lessons so they get plenty of speaking opportunities.

Here are a few resources you can use to practice español at home:

  • Kindergarten- 2nd Grade: “Hola hola” welcome song. You can ask your child about the Dame Cinco image and what Cuerpo Listo means.

  • 3rd-5th Grade: Practice the Spanish-speaking countries with the song: Países que hablan español.

¡Feliz mes de la herencia hispana y latina!

From September 15th - October 15th, it is Hispanic Heritage month! It is a time to honor the contributions, cultures and achievements of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. We have been discussing this during Spanish and will be doing some activities to celebrate, like learning about the many different Spanish-speaking countries illustrated in the map below!
