Mid May

  • Before our class placement meetings in June, each classroom teacher prepares a Post-it note for every student, including:
        • Student name
        • Academic level
        • Gender
        • Any notable challenges or considerations

  • We send a Parent Input Form inviting families to share suggestions. While we value this input, please note that placement requests are not guaranteed. Over 80 this year were submitted.

June

  • We meet with all grade-level teachers, the school resource team, and administration to begin forming classes. The Board provides us with:
        • Number of classes
        • Class configurations (straight or combined grades)
        • Student caps (e.g., Primary classes are capped at 20 students)

  • Placement Considerations - When creating classes, we aim to:

        • Ensure each student is placed with at least one friend
        • Balance classrooms by:
              1. Gender
              2. Academic levels (High, Medium, Low)
              3. Behavioural and social-emotional needs
              4. Academic supports (IEP, ELL, etc.)
        • Rotate students out of split-grade classes when possible
        • Review and consider parent input (organized by current grade and teacher)

August & September

  • Class lists may change in late August and again in mid-September based on updated enrollment numbers. We do our best to make fair and thoughtful adjustments when necessary.
