Scott Middle School's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening in Mr. Handerhan's Classroom?
Students in Mr. Handerhan’s art classes are exploring watercolor techniques with a focus on blending and control. Each student was challenged to create two paintings, one “summer beach” and the other “spring birds.” They are learning how to smoothly transition between colors, create gradients, and experiment with layering to build depth in their work. Throughout the process, students are connecting their practice to the elements of art such as color, value, and texture, as well as the principles of design, including balance, contrast, and unity. By aligning their projects with grade-level standards, students are not only developing technical skills but also strengthening their understanding of how artistic choices communicate ideas and emotions.
Each project was specifically designed to match the varying development skills and understanding across each grade. Sixth graders focus on foundational techniques, such as basic color mixing and simple blending, while being introduced to key elements of art like color and value. In seventh grade, students build on these skills by experimenting with more controlled blending, layering, and composition, while incorporating additional elements and principles such as contrast and balance. By eighth grade, students are challenged to apply their knowledge more independently, creating complex watercolor pieces that demonstrate intentional use of blending, depth, and design. Across all grade levels, projects were aligned to standards, ensuring that students progressively develop both technical skills and a deeper understanding of the elements of art and principles of design.
March's Golden Ticket Winners
Congratulations to our March Golden Ticket prize winners! Before Spring Break, we ran the February Golden Ticket Raffle from our PBIS Online Reward System. Golden Tickets are earned when students go above and beyond our expectations of Respect, Ownership, Courage, Kindness and Safety. Staff give them to students when they are really impressed. The following 10 students were given the choice of a school treat (Pencils, erasers, fidgets...) or a sweet treat.
Congratulations to: Cole Weldon, Serenity French, Suhri Grove, Zamaya Jones, Nashaly Morales Diaz, Eli Matukaitis, Sharon Guadron Gutierrez, Finn Randler, Maggie LaGarde, and Joey O'Brien. Keep up the great work! We are so proud of you!
