'"Women's History Month is an annual observance to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Celebrated during March in the United States, Germany, and Australia, corresponding with International Women's Day on March 8, it is observed during October in Canada, corresponding with the celebration of Persons Day on October 18.

A weeklong observance in Sonoma County, California, in 1978 was subsequently championed by Gerda Lerner and the National Women's History Alliance to be recognized as a national week (1980) and then month (1987) in the United States, spreading internationally after that. Since 2005, the annual celebration of Women's History Month in Australia has centered on a different area of women's achievement. Promotional materials and events are focused around the theme and organizations, institutions and community groups are encouraged to use this theme for their own events."

** MCJROTC Flag Retirement Ceremony ** ** MCJROTC Flag Retirement Ceremony **

This week, the MVHS MCJROTC Honor Guard Team conducted a solemn ceremony to retire our school’s unserviceable American flag that has flown over MVHS for several years.

A military flag retirement ceremony is a dignified, formal event used to destroy worn-out U.S. flags. The process involves inspecting flags, folding them properly, placing them on a fire, and rendering salutes while reading to honor the flag's service.

What made this event truly special was the cadet-led initiative to make it happen, with little guidance from our Instructors Major Burch-Bynum an Chief Neveaux. These young leaders researched the U.S. Flag Code, coordinated the logistics, and executed every detail with precision.

A special shoutout to Cadet Staff Sergeant Ryan Nichols, who went above and beyond by purchasing the replacement flag, building a custom container, and even coordinating with his parents to provide a proper burn pit.

Other cadets involved in Honor Guard that deserve recognition for their dedication to service are as follows:

  • C/Capt Katerin Romero
  • C/2ndLt Connor McCarthy
  • C/1stSgt Matthew Melendez
  • C/SSgt Dorian Ezpeleta
  • C/LCpl Mason Miller

We are really proud of these cadets for retiring our American Flag in such a dignified way!

  • Here is a video with highlights from the Flag Retirement Ceremony.

Strengthening College Readiness: A Request for Community Connections Strengthening College Readiness: A Request for Community Connections

Dear MVHS Families,

As we work to ensure our students are fully prepared for the transition to higher education, we are reaching out to our community to help bridge the gap between high school and college-level academic expectations. We are currently looking for leads and "feelers" for an upcoming Speaker Series focused on helping our rising seniors navigate the shift in grading rigor, assignment standards, and the personal accountability required at the next level.

If you are a professor or instructor at a two-year or four-year institution, an academic advisor, or have a professional connection to someone who might be interested in sharing their perspective with our students, we would love to hear from you.

At this stage, we are simply looking to identify potential partners within our network who can help our students understand what to expect in a college classroom.

Please reply directly to this email or contact Annie Stewart, amstewart@fcps.edu, if you have a lead or would like to volunteer your expertise.

Thank you for your continued support in setting our students up for long-term success.

Best regards,

Danielle Mascoll

We are excited to share a wonderful opportunity for our students as prom season approaches. We have partnered with a local nonprofit to ensure that every student has the chance to look and feel their best, regardless of their budget.

The nonprofit will be hosting a prom attire giveaway planned for late March or early April, with the exact date still to be determined. Additionally, they will provide free hair and makeup services here at the school on the day of prom.

While we have already started collecting items, we are hoping to gather additional donations to better support our students.

If you have any new or gently used formal attire—including dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories—please consider bringing them to the MVHS Resource Center for drop-off. The MVHS Parent Resource Center is in the Main Lobby of MVHS.

I have attached a flyer with more details. Please keep these services in mind for any students who may benefit.

Thank you for your time and continued support in making this a memorable event for our students.

Early Release Days

In the event of a 3-hour early release, lunch service will still be available between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. FNS proposes to offer grab-and-go meals for students, allowing them to go through the serving lines, choose items, and put them in provided meal bags. Both cold and hot meal options will be available. Students are still required to pick up complete reimbursable meals; otherwise, à la carte charges will be applied. All meals provided by FNS must be consumed on-site.

School Nutrition Accounts, PINs, Prepayments, & MySchoolBucks

FNS will be emailing student PINs via e-Notify and in advance of the first day of school. MySchoolBucks should be promoted and is now available for account prepayments. State legislation and the FCPS Meal Charge Policy direct all school nutrition account negative balance communication to parents/caregivers. Additionally, students may not be denied a breakfast or lunch meal for any reason. FNS will work with school administrators to communicate low/negative account balances.

Menus

School menus offer a variety of entrees, fruits, and vegetables that meet or exceed USDA guidelines, including nutrient standards. Menus, allergens, and nutrition information are all available online at LINQ Connect. School menus will be published monthly, starting one week before the first day of school. FNS makes every effort to offer items as listed on the planned menu. Unanticipated substitutions are published on LINQ Connect whenever possible.

Regrettably, we are seeing a rapidly growing increase in students illegally parking on campus during the school day. These student vehicles are being parking in reserved staff spaces & visitor parking.

This is a safety issue and needs to stop immediately.

Students - Please see the main office if you would like to purchase a parking pass.

REMINDER: All parking passes are for a semester only. Anyone wishing to have a semester 2 parking pass will need to purchase one at the end of January 2025.

Optional FREE Parking: Students may also park along (a) Old Mount Vernon Road, (b) Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, and (c) Maryland Street.

Students MAY NOT park at the Rec Center or in community areas that block private driveways.

Mount Vernon High School is a vibrant educational environment characterized by commitment to excellence. Located less than a mile from George Washington's home, Mount Vernon High School is steeped in tradition. Founded in 1939, its long history of excellence is evident in its current students, faculty, and staff. Mount Vernon High School has a world-class curriculum. Students choose from a wide range of course offerings, including International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. The International Baccalaureate Program is a rigorous advanced-level program that is an option for students in their final two years of high school. Individual needs are accommodated through three special education programs, an English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) program, and advanced or accelerated courses in all disciplines. At Mount Vernon High School, technology enhances and adds dimension to instruction in all curricular areas.

In addition to outstanding academic programs, Mount Vernon High School offers students a broad range of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities designed to meet and extend the broad range of student interests. Fine and performing arts students and athletic teams have received numerous awards and recognition. Contributing to Mount Vernon High School's unique character and strength is its diversity. This diversity is enjoyed and celebrated daily, as well as through a series of cultural events that bring students, parents, and faculty together and demonstrate cooperative living in a multicultural world. Mount Vernon High School is further enriched by the support of an active community.
