October 2026 Update

From the Office of the Superintendent

October 2026 UpdateFrom the Office of the Superintendent

Dear Oceanport and Sea Bright Families and Community Members,

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, our schools have settled into a wonderful rhythm. Walking through the halls at Wolf Hill and Maple Place this month, I’ve seen our students deeply engaged in their learning, building on the routines and connections they established at the start of the year.

October gave us many opportunities to focus on school culture and community values. During the week of October 5th through 9th, our students showed amazing spirit for the Week of Respect, highlighting the importance of kindness, inclusion, and character. We also kicked off Red Ribbon Week at both schools on Friday, October 23rd, promoting healthy choices and positive behavior. Beyond these special observances, it has been wonderful seeing our families make connections at autumn activities like our PTO Fall Festival. Thank you to everyone who helped organize and attend such a wonderful event!

As we look ahead to November, please keep an eye out for key dates and events on our district calendar:

  • Thursday, November 5 & Friday, November 6: Schools will be closed for the annual NJEA Teacher’s Convention.

  • Saturday, November 14: The PTO is sponsoring our 2nd Annual Turkey Trot! We hope to see many of our families there for this fun community tradition.

  • Thursday, November 26 & Friday, November 27: Schools will be closed for Thanksgiving Break.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership, dedication, and ongoing support of our students, teachers, and staff. Wishing you and your family a safe, cozy, and enjoyable fall season!

Yours in education,

Karen Barry

Superintendent, Oceanport School District

As we move through the school year, it is important to remember that student success extends beyond academics. Supporting our students’ mental health helps them build confidence, develop resilience, strengthen relationships, and reach their full potential. When we work together as a school community to prioritize emotional well-being, we help ensure that every child feels supported, valued, and ready to learn.

As part of this ongoing commitment, our administrative team is currently reading Free-Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy as we begin preparing for a Mental Health Forum for families in February. The book encourages thoughtful conversations about childhood, independence, and how we can best support our children as they navigate an increasingly complex world. We invite any interested parents and community members to join us in reading the book as we explore these important topics together. We look forward to creating an opportunity for meaningful discussion, shared perspectives, and collaboration as we continue working together to support the mental health and well-being of all our students.

Early Literacy Screener Early Literacy Screener

This fall, our Kindergarten through 4th grade students completed their first Early Literacy Screener of the school year. Per New Jersey state requirements for Kindergarten through 3rd grade, we conduct this universal screening three times a year to ensure every child receives the right support to grow as a strong, confident reader. Additionally, our 4th grade students complete a passage reading fluency screening in both the fall and spring, to measure their growth in fluency.

As shared in September, our district uses i-Ready for these screenings:

  • Kindergarten students completed brief, one-on-one literacy tasks directly with a teacher. Results will be sent home in your child’s folder on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
  • Students in Grades 1 - 4 completed the teacher-led literacy tasks, along with the digital i-Ready Inform assessment, the results of which are compiled into a Literacy Profile Report. Please follow the link below for more information on the Literacy Profile Report.

Please log into the Genesis Parent Portal to review your child's i-Ready Inform results:

  • i-Ready Fall 2026 ELA (Grades 1 - 8)
  • i-Ready Fall 2026 Math (Grades 1 - 8)
  • i-Ready Literacy Profile Fall 2026 (Grades 1 - 4 only)

Students in Grades 1 - 8 will complete the i-Ready Inform assessment again in the winter and spring. This assessment helps us understand your child's unique strengths and areas for growth in reading and mathematics so we can tailor instruction to their specific needs. By measuring student progress throughout the school year, this adaptive assessment ensures teachers have the insights necessary to provide personalized support and keep learning on track. It is not a high-stakes test, but rather a valuable tool to help every student reach their full potential.

Preparing for Changes in Routine

October can be an exciting month filled with classroom celebrations, costumes, candy, and special events. While many children enjoy these activities, changes in routine and increased excitement can sometimes feel overwhelming.

At school, we often prepare students for schedule changes ahead of time by talking through expectations, reviewing plans, and offering reminders throughout the day. Families can use these same strategies at home to help children feel more comfortable during busy or unpredictable times.

Before attending events or activities, try previewing what your child can expect. You might discuss where you are going, who will be there, what the schedule will look like, and what behaviors are expected. Visual countdowns or calendars can also help children prepare for upcoming events.

Remember that excitement and dysregulation often go hand-in-hand. Providing opportunities for breaks, quiet time, or calming activities can help children reset and feel more successful during busy seasons.

Board of Education Spotlight: Supporting Student Mental Health and Wellness

Greetings Oceanport & Sea Bright Communities,

As October comes to a close, I would like to take a moment to highlight an important aspect of our students' educational experience that extends beyond academics: their mental health and emotional well-being.

October brings several opportunities to recognize the importance of mental health, including World Mental Health Day on October 10. It serves as a reminder that preparing students for success involves more than academic achievement. Helping children develop confidence, build healthy relationships, navigate challenges, and learn to manage stress provides them with valuable skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Supporting student wellness has long been a priority of the Oceanport School District. In fact, one of the four goal areas identified in our district's current 2022–2027 Strategic Plan focuses specifically on helping students develop the skills necessary to become "confident, well-informed, accepting leaders to be successful in today's world and beyond."

This commitment is reflected in several initiatives outlined in our district's Strategic Planning Goals Action Plan, including opportunities for students to strengthen problem-solving skills, professional development for staff, and programs designed to promote a positive and supportive school environment.

The Strategic Plan also identifies specific initiatives focused on both student and staff wellness, including mindfulness activities, meditation, sensory rooms, therapy dog visits, and opportunities to strengthen relationships among students, educators, and families. These efforts reflect an understanding that children are better positioned to learn and achieve academically when they feel safe, supported, and connected to their school community.

Of course, supporting student mental health is a shared responsibility. Our teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff play an essential role in recognizing students' needs, providing guidance, and creating a school environment where children can feel comfortable seeking help when they need it. Equally important is the partnership between our schools and families, which helps reinforce healthy habits, open communication, and a consistent network of support for our children. As a Board of Education, we are proud to support and prioritize the efforts of our administrative team in these endeavors through the Mental Health Committee.

As Board President Mark Patterson shared in September, our District will soon begin developing its next strategic plan in collaboration with the New Jersey School Boards Association. This process provides an important opportunity to reflect on our progress, assess the changing needs of our students, and consider how we can continue strengthening student wellness and support services in the years ahead. I encourage parents, educators, and community members to participate in these conversations. Your perspectives will help ensure that our District's future priorities reflect the needs of our students and the expectations of the community.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide every child with a strong academic foundation, while helping them develop the confidence, resilience, and practical skills needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. By working together, we can continue to foster a school environment where students feel safe, supported, and prepared for the future.

As we approach this next phase of planning, we appreciate your continued partnership, and we look forward to hearing from you!
