Message from our Media Center...

Due to a technical issue, not all of the returned books were checked in correctly. As a result, you may have received communications regarding missing books that have already been returned. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Please disregard these messages and rest assured that all returned books will be addressed promptly. We kindly ask that if your child comes across any books they have not returned, to please return them to the school library on Monday. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Ohio State Testing Results Now Available in ProgressBook

Ohio State Testing (OST) for grades 3-5 is now complete for the 2023–2024 school year. According to Ohio law: “districts, community schools, STEM schools and chartered nonpublic schools must report the results of Ohio’s State Tests to students’ parents or guardians no later than June 30 of each year. Results may be either sent via mail, email or by posting the scores to a secure portal that families can access on the district or school’s website.”

The complete printed family reports are sent to all Ohio districts in late July. BBHCSD will send home the complete family reports at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.

The attached video demonstrates how to locate your child's test scores in Progressbook.

Cuyahoga County Public Library Summer Reading Challenge

As we approach the summer break, it's essential to highlight the importance of keeping our young learners engaged in reading. Research consistently shows that students who read over the summer break maintain or even improve their reading skills, while those who don't may experience a decline known as the "summer slide." One fantastic way to encourage reading during the summer is by participating in the Cuyahoga County Library’s summer reading challenge. This program offers a variety of incentives and activities to keep children excited about reading. You and your student(s) can sign up for the program by visiting a CCPL branch. Helps your students stay academically sharp for the upcoming school year and make it a summer of adventure through books. Join the excitement of the Cuyahoga County Public Library’s summer reading program!

Overdrive's SORA App

The SORA app serves as an invaluable digital bridge between our students (3rd graders - 12th graders) and the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Through SORA, readers gain access to a vast digital library, teeming with age-appropriate ebooks and audiobooks. This innovative platform not only promotes literacy but also encourages a lifelong love for reading by offering an engaging and interactive experience tailored to each child's interests and reading level. The SORA app can be added to any device that allows apps. Students will use their BBHCSD account to log into SORA with their email and password. By empowering students to explore the wonders of literature from the convenience of their devices, SORA transforms the public library into a virtual realm of limitless possibilities, enriching young minds and nurturing a community of enthusiastic readers.

Calendar Change for 2024-2025

The school calendar has changed for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. The first day of school for students in grades 1 - 12 will now be August 21st, rather than August 19th. And the teachers will return Thursday, August 15th - Friday, August 16th and Monday, August 19th - Tuesday, August 20th for professional development. This school calendar change is due to the state-mandated, newly adopted ELA curriculum. We will continue to share this with our school community as we approach the start of next school year.

Please note that kindergarten phase in will be August 21 - August 23 where families will sign up for one day to attend from approximately 9:30 - 2:30. The first official day for kindergarten will be on Monday, August 26, 2024. More information will be sent to families.

Erin's Law

Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 288 (SB 288) into law mandating that school districts notify parents about required curriculum on child sexual abuse and sexual violence prevention.

Schools must implement these new requirements beginning in the 2023-2024 school year.

SB 288 requires that school districts provide students in grades K-6 developmentally appropriate instruction on child sexual abuse prevention, including information on available counseling and resources for children who are sexually abused.

Please carefully read the information linked here to make your informed decision on having your child(ren) participate or opt-out.

  • Photo ID is required for student pick up during the day, so please be sure to have it accessible when signing out your child.
  • Unpaid school fees may result in a student not participating in a field trip. Please reach out to Lisa Levine (440.740.4111) with questions about payment or if you need assistance.

Solar Eclipse

We are just a few weeks away from Ohio’s Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. The Brecksville - Broadview Heights School District is not in session on April 8 for students. This is an incredibly rare event, given that the last total solar eclipse to pass through Ohio was in 1806. The next one will not be until 2099. The eclipse will enter Ohio around 3:00 p.m. and is estimated to reach totality at 3:13 p.m., lasting roughly 3 minutes and 26 seconds.

Here are some links with helpful information about the eclipse and how to view it safely:

  • What is a Solar Eclipse (video)
  • 2024 Solar Eclipse - Ohio Department of Education and Workforce
  • Solar Eclipse 2024 – Ohio Department of Natural Resources
  • Ohio Emergency Management Agency

Attendance at BBHES

Attendance at school is one of the most important factors in our students’ education. We understand illnesses happen and emergency life events occur; these are a priority. However, consistent attendance at school is vital to healthy academic and social growth for our students.

Schools are required by Ohio law to notify families when a student has become “excessively absent” or “habitually truant”. These are different, but both have a potential negative impact on the academic and/or social growth for your child. Excessively absent means a student has been absent for 65 hours in the school year, or 38 hours in one month. These hours can be for both excused or unexcused reasons, and once a student reaches the threshold it may be why the student is struggling in school academically and/or socially. For clarification, excused absences are for the following reasons: a verifiable illness, a death in the family, an approved vacation, or a religious holiday. Once a student has reached or passed this threshold, the families will be notified that their child has been excessively absent from school, and moving forward if the student misses three (3) or more consecutive days of school, documentation will need to be provided in order to count the days as excused. An absence intervention team may be put into place at this time and meetings scheduled with the guardian(s) and student to set up a plan to increase attendance.

Habitual truancy means a student has unexcused absences for 72 hours in a school year or 42 hours in one month. An absence intervention team will be assigned to your child and a plan created in partnership with the guardian, student and school team will be created and implemented to increase school attendance. Typically, a student will reach the excessive absence threshold well before they will become habitual truant.

If your child has met or exceeded a threshold, you will be receiving a notification letter by the end of the week outlining the absences and this information.. The main concern with the excessive absences is that for some students, this has a direct connection to difficulty understanding subject concepts, developing meaningful peer relationships and keeping healthy/productive routines. We understand that for many students who are excessively absent, this could have been mainly from a family trip, one week of a bad illness, or all from excused absences. Remember, we are required to notify families, regardless of if the absences are excused or unexcused, both types count toward the threshold, and the student still has not been in school for an “excessive” amount of time.

Please help us stay committed with communicating to our students the importance of consistent attendance to school. If you have any questions about your child's attendance, please reach out to the grade level principal. Thank you.

Reminders for Arrival

If you are dropping your child off in the morning, please use the drop-off loop. There are several students being dropped off in the parking lot and walking across the lot to the school which is causing an unsafe situation. There are others who are pulling up by the handicap parking spots and creating a second drop-off line. This is creating a problem to those who need to access the these parking spots. It is critical that we all keep our students safe by following the protocols in place. Thank you!

Water Bottles

We have an increased number of students bringing metal cups to school such as Stanleys and Yetis. These cups are not secure and spill throughout the day. Please encourage your child to bring a plastic water bottle with a screw top cap. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Typically, a student will reach the excessive absence threshold well before they will become habitual truant.

As we begin the second semester of the school year at Brecksville Broadview Heights Elementary School, we want to bring this information to your attention. In the next couple of weeks, if your child has met or exceeded a threshold, you will be receiving a notification letter outlining the absences and this information. The main concern with the excessive absences is that for some students, this has a direct connection to difficulty understanding subject concepts, developing meaningful peer relationships and keeping healthy/productive routines. Jingle Bell Jog/ Holiday Giving

Please join us in helping to spread some holiday cheer to families in our school community through the BBHES Jingle Bell Jog! This project, supported by our PSO, helps provide families with a little extra during a time that can be financially difficult. This year we are asking families to donate any amount through this online link or by sending in a cash donation. The donations will help our BBHES families who could use assistance. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Toth (tothc@bbhcsd.org). Donations can be sent to school or dropped off at the main entrance by Friday, December 15th.

To celebrate this season of giving, all of our PreK through 5th-grade students will participate in a Jingle Bell Jog - Fun Run around the playground on December 20th. Students will receive bells to tie to their shoes, and the students will jingle their bells as they walk/run around the playground. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile project and have a happy, healthy holiday season!

Jingle Bell Jog

12 Days of Holiday Spirit

Below are some festive days for our staff and students to show their holiday spirit.

Message from Food Service...

When sending in breakfast/lunch money to the school building, please clearly list your student's first and last name and grade on the envelope. This helps the food service department deposit the money into the correct student account.

Student Visionaries of The Year Candidates

Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School is excited to participate again in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student Visionary of the Year student leadership program this year. This year, our candidate team, Team Compass, consists of Ella Rundo, Kayla Kosla, and Gabby Gawlik. Team Compass and their team members will represent BBHHS in this regional campaign as they compete with 40 other area schools participating in the fundraising competition year.

One of the team's organized events is a Fun 'n' Stuff Family Fun Night for the BBH Elementary School. Details are outlined below. A direct link to purchase tickets can be found here.

Book Check Out Information

With a longer book checkout time period, we thought it would be helpful for you and your student to receive regular updates on what books your student has checked out from the library. A checkout notice will be emailed to the student directly and the email address in our records for home every Sunday night. If the system and everything works correctly, If you are not receiving a notice, then your student does not have a book checked out, or I don't have your email address correct in the system. Please note, that there are never fines for overdue books. If a book is lost or missing, let us know. We will mark it as such in your students' record and closer to the end of the year figure out missing book fees. (So many times the books are found - hoping to alleviate that stress/worry/refund.) Please email hustonk@bbhcsd.org with any questions or concerns.

Message from Food Service

Please visit PaySchools Central to apply for free/reduced-price meals, view your student's meal status and transactions, transfer funds between siblings, and add money to their account. Cash or check payment is also accepted at the building level. All menus and meal prices can be found through MySchoolMenus located under the Food Services tab on the district website or through the free mobile app.

Beginning this school year, the Ohio Department of Education has been approved to directly certify students as eligible for free or reduced meals using Medicaid information. Additionally, the State of Ohio now reimburses schools the former household financial obligation of a reduced-price meal ($0.30 breakfast and $0.40 lunch). Therefore, students who qualify for reduced-price meals receive them at no cost. Please contact Food Service Supervisor, Amy Voigt with any questions.

Character Counts at BBHES

Each month BBHES will focus on a different character trait of a good PAX leader. We will be on the lookout for students who display these character traits.

The word of the month for October is Accountability. Accountability means taking ownership of one's actions and responsibilities. It means giving one's best effort at all times. When you are personally accountable, you take ownership of what happens because of your choices and actions. You do not blame others or make excuses, and you do what you can to make amends when things go wrong. To be accountable is to own your choices!

Three students from each grade level who display this character trait on a regular basis will be chosen to earn a golden coin to use in our Book Vending Machine. We know our students can do it! Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

As many of you know, beginning in the 2023-2024 school year and in accordance with Ohio’s dyslexia support laws (ORC 3323.251), all Ohio schools must administer an approved tier 1 universal dyslexia screener that can assist in identifying students whose current level of skills may indicate a potential for being at risk of reading difficulties such as dyslexia.

There are no exceptions or exemptions in the dyslexia support laws. All students in grades K-3 must receive the tier 1 universal screener. BBHCSD will be utilizing Acadience (formerly known as DIBELS) in grades K-1 and i-Ready Literacy Tasks in grades 2-3. While some components of these assessment tools have been updated to meet the requirements of the law, they have been used in the past in BBHCSD.

Both assessment tools serve the dual purpose as tier 1 universal dyslexia screeners and determining on-track and off-track (in fulfillment of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee law). The only difference stipulated in the law is all kindergarten students are to receive the tier 1 universal dyslexia screener in January. Thus, the winter administration of Acadience will be used for kindergartners as their tier 1 universal dyslexia screener. Assessments will begin this week and conclude on September 29.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 will also be taking the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic Assessment. The assessment window will be closing on September 29th for all students in grades K-5.

School Attendance

BBHES will continue to focus on school attendance this year and the importance of getting your child to school on time. School begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. This means that your children must be in their classrooms ready to learn at this time. If your child will be absent from school, please call the attendance call-off line at 440-740-4100 no later than 9:00 a.m. Please be sure to leave your name, your child's name and teacher, and the reason for your child's absence. If you do not leave a reason, your child's absence will be marked as unexcused.

Regular school attendance is essential for your child's academic success, personal development, and future opportunities. To ensure your children attend school consistently, establish a daily routine that includes a set wake-up time, breakfast, and a consistent departure schedule.

August 20, 2023

It was so nice to see our families in the building for the Meet and Greet events last week. Having the kids back in the building makes it feel like a school! I am excited to welcome our first-grade through fifth-grade students back to school tomorrow, August 21, 2023, and welcome our kindergarten "New Bees" on their first official day, Thursday, August 24, 2023. I am confident that this school year will be filled with fun and excitement for your child and that BBHES will be a place where our staff and students want to work, learn, and enjoy!
zoom_out_map

First Day Reminders

  • Please do not drop your child off prior to 8:45 am. All cars will line up in the front loop of the school. Staff will be outside to assist so parents should not exit vehicles. All students must exit on the curbside of the car.
  • When sending in money for your child's lunch account, please label it clearly with your child's first and last name in the memo line.
  • Change your child's default pick-up mode in Pikmykid.
  • Beekeeper families must park in the lot and enter the building to sign in their child. There is absolutely no parking in the front loop at any time.
  • Please bring your driver's license when volunteering in the building or picking up a child. We will not release a child to any adult without the proper identification.
zoom_out_map

Important Dismissal Information

  • Please go into PikmyKid and set your child's default for pick-up. Choose the mode your child will take most often home from school. Your child will go home based on the dismissal mode set in PikMyKId.
  • Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no later than 2:45 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or call your child's grade-level secretary.
  • When arriving to pick up your child at the car line, please be sure to announce your arrival in the Pikmykid app (if applicable).
  • Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All families were provided two tags during the Meet and Greets. Please keep them in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags in the event of an emergency as well.
  • Please do not block our crosswalks. We have students who walk to and from school each day.
  • If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in, and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper identification, so please bring your driver's license.
  • All walkers and bikes will be picked up on the sidewalk near the preschool. A staff member will cross the students and meet families on the north side of the property. Parents are not permitted to pick up walkers/bikers at the building/doors.

Breakfast eaters are strongly encouraged to learn their PIN ID number. Since students don’t have their badges in the mornings, this will help speed up the breakfast lines.

For grades 3-5, we will be selling one a la carte snack per day. Students must have money in their accounts to purchase. No charges are allowed for those with a zero or negative balance. Students will purchase the items along with their lunch as they check out before sitting down at their table.

PikMyKid Dismissal App

BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the program. We will update bus numbers as soon as they are made available to us. Your child's car tag number should remain the same as last school year. All families will get two car tags which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets.

If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the information below.

PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety. The unique features of PikMyKid allow you, as parents, to easily change pick-up modes, quickly delegate to an alternate individual for pickup, change to an ‘After School’ program, and even schedule for future pickup mode, pickup individual, and after-school programs. This app allows you to be in full control of your child’s dismissal and it gives the school information regarding dismissal and the ability to acknowledge every change and instantly check your child’s dismissal status should you have a question.

To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that will show you a few of the PikMyKid features. https://www.pikmykid.com/features/for-parents/

All families will need to download the application and complete the registration process if not already done.
