Principal's Corner

We are off and running to a fresh, new start for our 2021-22 school year. It is hard to believe that six weeks have passed since we returned in August. Thanks go out to everyone for working so well with our staff and putting our childrens’ health, well-being, and safety at the forefront of what we do. Your understanding with the changing protocols mandated for our schools have left many with questions and concerns, but we appreciate the resiliency of our families. Please continue to work with your child’s teachers, and feel free to reach out to me with any positive comments or any challenges you may experience. Go Eagles!

STEM

Linden Community Schools new STEM program is off to a great start at Central Elementary. Former Linden Middle School science teacher Mrs. Thorin is leading the charge with a new program that involves various activities including new LEGO robotics kits and an after school robotics program. Our media center has been revamped and transformed to include a STEM area for our budding engineers and scientists.

NWEA Assessment

The window for the fall NWEA benchmark assessments has been completed. NWEA is a research-based, not-for-profit organization that supports students and educators worldwide by creating assessment solutions that precisely measure growth and proficiency—and provide insights to help tailor instruction. Teachers and intervention staff have been working together to administer the reading and math assessments. The results of the assessments identifies those students that could benefit from additional intervention support.

Professional Development

Our Central staff along with the staff members from our district spent their morning learning about NWEA. This professional development took place at Linden Middle School. Teachers learned about the importance of MAP growth results and how to interpret that information and apply appropriate learning strategies.

Student Council

Our newly elected student student council had their first meeting. Mrs. Cooke and Mrs. Duguid will be overseeing our student council again this year. Candidates that were interested for student council had to fill out a questionnaire, give a short speech for their classmates and make a campaign poster. Two students were chosen by their peers in each classroom.

PALS

We are extremely happy to announce that our PALS is going strong. There were several parents at our initial meeting. Julie Boser is this year’s Central Elementary PAL’s president. We discussed several upcoming events that will be taking place: Homecoming, assemblies, fundraisers, etc. It looks like our PALS team will be active supporting our students and staff this year!

Central Elementary just completed their Fall Mumkin Sale. We raised $2,845! The fundraiser will help PALS sponsor wonderful programs for our students, school, and community, including teacher grants (money for classrooms), teacher appreciation gifts, assemblies, Shamrock Shuffle, Christmas Extravaganza, art fair and more!

Popcorn Sales Record

Mrs. Adams hosted our first popcorn sale in a very long time. Since the initial pandemic outbreak Central Elementary has not had a popcorn sale. It was heart-warming to see so many smiling faces, feasting on popcorn again! Around 1,400 bags of popcorn were sold. That was about three times greater from our old record. Thanks to all our PALS volunteers for spending the entire day popping popcorn, counting money and distributing the bags. Their dedication helped to make this popcorn sale so successful!

Safety Drills

Central conducted three fire drills, a tornado drill and a shelter in-place lock down. The staff members reviewed expectations and procedures prior to the drills. The students did a great job executing each and every drill. They moved in a safe and expediential manner. The students and staff of Central Elementary continue to prepare and remain vigilant for all emergencies.

SOAR Kickoff!

We kicked off our SOAR (Stay Safe, Offer Kindness, Act Responsibly and Remember Respect), behavior expectations. Teachers instructed students of the behaviors that are expected of them at Central Elementary. During the students' lunches fun activities were conducted to reiterate and solidify those positive behavior expectations. Students then signed behavioral contracts are posted in our hallways as a reminder to our commitment.

Superintendent Visit

Students in Mr. Smith’s fourth grade class took the opportunity to gather real world experience for their science class. With help from the Superintendent Cieselski,, students were presented with construction plans of the new Multi-Use facility where they were able to investigate soil samples taken directly from the site. Real-world connections help extend learning beyond the classroom for our kids!

DJ Switzer

Some favorite memories from our former students are spinning tunes during lunch period on Fridays. Recess aide Mrs. Switzer, aka “DJ Switz,” takes requests and rocks the school lunch periods for each and every class. Students are rewarded with these fun and fabulous Fridays for their good behavior during the week. Listening to the energy and excited singing of our kids down the halls never gets old!

Word of The Day

Wednesday is word of the day in Mrs. Duguid's class. Students chose a word that has meaning or purpose to them. Students described why they chose their word. One of the students said, "I chose kindness as my word because one can never be too kind!"

Touch Down!

STEM learning goes beyond the lab in the library. Fifth grade students in Mrs. Koledo’s class spent a few days constructing an authentic football field and goal posts for use with miniature footballs this past week. The students spent another day observing, recording, and analyzing data based on their projects. All this science and math time spent just really boils down to a Linden Eagles’ football win on Homecoming night - GO EAGLES!

Classroom Cooking

Mrs. O’Dell’s class recently had a cooking lesson in the classroom! They made and ate pancakes that also gave them an opportunity to build their reading, math, and life skills. They learned the importance of reading and doing steps in order, and used their math skills to double the recipe and measure ingredients accurately. Now they have a new life skill. Making pancakes was not only educational, but delicious!
