We had our yearly Homecoming Assembly today, and I'm just so proud of our student leaders. They put on a great show, and to give you a little peek behind the curtain, this assembly is normally an hour in length. This year, because HoCo overlapped with Conference Week, they only had 35 minutes! But our kids handled the shift in time with great aplomb and it was a really fun assembly...even though I was the second one out in musical chairs. As I was leaving the gym afterwards, I happened to see one of our winter athletes gathering trash up from the bleachers. I asked and he wasn't part of a leadership class; this task was not assigned to him. Rather, he just saw a way to help and did it. A wonderful example of Sentinel Spirit, and a great way to end the week. It's a great time to be a Sentinel! - Jake

JROTC Cadets Give Back to the Community

Last Saturday morning, several JROTC cadets, led by Cadet Call, volunteered their time to clean the Global War on Terrorism Memorial at Ross Plaza in DuPont. This project is one of many opportunities throughout the year that allows cadets to earn volunteer hours toward the JROTC Volunteer Ribbon. The program remains committed to connecting with community leaders and providing meaningful service and leadership experiences for students as they represent Steilacoom High School in the communities of Anderson Island, DuPont, and Steilacoom.

Thanksgiving Support

We are fortunate to have many kind people in our community who are working together to give food for Thanksgiving to families in our district who need help. Usually, the food includes ham or chicken instead of turkey. Please know that you will have to cook some of the food at your home.

Families will need to pick up their food at Steilacoom High School on November 21st, during the school day. Each family will get one meal.

If you need assistance, please send the following information to your student's school counselor:

  • Name(s) of parents or guardians in your family
  • Name of one SHS student in your family
  • Best daytime phone number
  • Number of adults and children in your home

Supplies are limited (first come, first serve). Please reply as soon as possible if you want to participate.

The last day to send your entry is October 31, 2025.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Steilacoom High School Hires Matt Johnson as Inaugural Girls Flag Football Coach

STEILACOOM, WA – October 21, 2025 – Steilacoom High School is thrilled to announce the hiring of Matt Johnson as the school's first-ever head coach for the new Girls Flag Football program. Coach Johnson will lead the Sentinel program as the sport is officially adopted across Washington state.

"We are delighted to welcome a coach of Matt Johnson's caliber and experience to launch this groundbreaking program," said Athletic Director Tom Bradbury. "His deep football knowledge, coupled with his commitment to student success, makes him the perfect leader to build a strong foundation for our girls' flag football team."

Coach Johnson brings an extensive coaching background and a passion for developing student-athletes. With 18 years of experience coaching high school boys' football, including time as a head coach and offensive coordinator, Coach Johnson's expertise is significant:

  • Head Football Coach at Foss High School
  • Offensive Coordinator at Stadium High School

In addition to his coaching roles, Coach Johnson currently serves as the Director of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Puget Sound. This professional experience highlights his strong organizational skills, meticulous planning, and commitment to ensuring all aspects of a program—from team logistics to safety protocols—run smoothly.

Coach Johnson is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment, recognizing that building confidence and a strong sense of team identity is just as critical as teaching the game itself, especially for a growing sport.

"I am excited about the opportunity to help grow the girls' flag football program at Steilacoom High School," Coach Johnson stated. "Throughout my career, I've worked to help every player reach their potential both on and off the field. I am confident that my experience, passion for the game, and commitment to student-athlete development make me uniquely prepared to lead the Sentinels to success in this exciting new chapter."

The inaugural season for the new team is anticipated to begin practicing on November 17th, with games starting in December.
