Summer Math

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we wrap up another exciting school year, we want to thank you for all the support you've given your child in their math learning journey. Summer is a well-deserved break, but it’s also an important time to keep skills fresh, especially in areas like basic math facts and working with integers.

Just 10–15 minutes a day of review can make a big difference in helping your child feel confident and ready for the next school year. Practicing multiplication and division facts will strengthen their foundation, while continuing to work with positive and negative numbers will prepare them for more advanced concepts.

To help guide this practice, included with this letter are sheets designed to target key skills your child will need for success next year. They are meant to be done a little at a time throughout the summer.

Let’s keep the math momentum going this summer!

Resources for summer math practice

Skill Sheets

· 5th Grade Going Into 6th Grade Math Summer Packet (pdf)

  • 6th Grade Going Into 7th Grade Math Summer Packet (pdf)
  • 7th Grade Going Into 8th Grade Math Summer Packet (pdf)

On-line Resources

· 99 Math - 99math is a free, fast-paced multiplayer math game where students race to solve problems in real time, making fact fluency and integer practice fun, competitive, and engaging.

· Khan Academy “Get Ready” + full 6th–8th-grade courses - Short diagnostic quizzes place students and auto-build a summer playlist that reviews negative-number arithmetic, proportions, early algebra, and more. Videos, hints, and mastery tracking are built in.

· ThatQuiz – An online platform offering customizable quizzes and instant feedback on a wide range of math topics, including integers, fractions, and equations that can be used to targeted skill practice.

· Mathigon - An interactive math platform that combines virtual manipulatives, engaging lessons, and creative puzzles to help middle school students explore concepts like integers, geometry, and algebra in a hands-on, visual way.

Sounds of Summer!

To wrap up the school year and tie into their Waves & Technologies unit, 8th Grade Science students built their own speakers. The kits have the necessary materials and directions for students to put their engineering skills to the test! What a fun way to connect their knowledge and head into summer!

Summer Reading

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we head into summer break, we want to emphasize the importance of your child continuing to read over the summer months. Research shows that students who don’t read during the summer can lose up to two months of academic progress, often called the “summer slide.” This learning loss can accumulate year after year, making it harder for students to catch up when school resumes.

Here’s why reading during the summer is so valuable:

  1. Prevents Learning Loss

  2. Builds Vocabulary and Comprehension

  3. Supports Academic Success

  4. Encourages a Love of Learning

  5. Creates Healthy Screen-Time Balance

What You Can Do:

  • Visit your local library and sign up for a summer reading program.

  • Set a daily reading time—even 20 minutes a day makes a big difference.

  • Let your child choose books they enjoy.

  • Read together or discuss what they’re reading.

The 2nd Annual Aloha Celebration. What a fantastic Monday night at G-E-T Middle School! The 2nd Annual Aloha Celebration was a joyful gathering of students, families, and community members, all coming together to honor the achievements of our 5th–8th grade students. It was a night filled with smiles, celebration, and community spirit—we can’t wait to do it again next year! Move-up

Fifth grade students recently took an exciting step toward middle school during their visit on Wednesday. They enjoyed performances by the 6th grade band and choir, met their future teachers, and got a feel for what’s ahead. A highlight of the day was a Q&A session with WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) leaders, who shared helpful advice and answered questions about middle school life. The visit helped ease nerves and build excitement for the transition!

Department (TCSD) to our middle school as they presented their BADGES program. A powerful educational initiative focused on helping students make positive life choices. The BADGES program emphasizes that good decisions today lead to a better tomorrow. Throughout the day, students rotated through engaging stations led by local law enforcement officers. Topics included drug awareness, online safety, and home safety. One particularly impactful session featured a guest speaker who shared his personal story about the dangers of drug use and how it changed his life. The event concluded with an exciting display of community support. Students had the opportunity to interact with drug detection dogs, firefighters, EMTs, police officers, safety equipment, drones, and emergency vehicles. We are incredibly thankful to the TCSD and all the first responders who made this event possible. We appreciate your time, effort, and dedication to educating and protecting our students.

In 8th grade ELA the students have worked hard on their final reading and writing projects. They had to choose a novel to read with a minimum of 100 pages. They wrote essays that focused on theme, sequencing, and summarization. After completing their essays, they created Book Recommendation Slides, which they presented to the class. This culminating project of hard work and grit came at a time when most wanted to be outside in the sun. Way to go 8th grade! One quote from her essay, written by Grace Dahl, sums up a life long lesson we could all learn from..."Sometimes in the end, we don't get what we want or what we fought for, but sometimes it's not about what's at the end, but about what you did along the way that got you to the end."

Memorial Day Program Band Program

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Middle School Band has traditionally provided the music for the Trempealeau VFW Post Memorial Day Program. The Band has been asked to play The Star-Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and America.

Students need to arrive at Central Park in Trempealeau by 9:30am on Monday, May 26 and gather near the band shelter. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the gym at Trempealeau Elementary School. Please have the three songs in your binder along with a couple of clothes pins and/or clips to hold the pages open (If it is windy, you won’t be able to see your music).

Concert dress for the day is any type of patriotic colored shirt: red, white, or blue. Shorts are acceptable to wear. You may wear sunglasses, but please refrain from wearing hats. Please bring a collapsible chair and a music stand if you are able, as chairs and stands will not be provided.

The program begins at 10:00am. Parents, I encourage you to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the service. It is a very nice program and a very important way we honor all our local Veterans, past and present. The program will last about 40 minutes. You are free to leave as soon as the program is over.

If your family is going to be out of town and you are unable to perform at the service, parents are to email by Friday, May 23. Thank you for all of your dedication to Band and taking part in this important service!

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at the contact information below. Best, -- Adam George Middle School Band Teacher Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District adamgeorge@getschools.k12.wi.us 608-582-3500 ext. 2228

Attendance Update

Celebrating Improved Student Attendance

We’re excited to share a positive trend in student attendance!

At this point in the 2022–2023 school year, 118 out of 285 students (41.4%) had missed 10 or more school days. Last year, that number dropped to 82 out of 289 students (28.3%). This year, we’re seeing even more progress — only 62 out of 291 students (21.3%) have missed 10 or more days so far.

Thank you all for your continued support and effort in helping our students stay engaged and present in school. Every day matters, and your commitment is making a real difference!

We also have two exciting attendance goals for the end of the year. If we reach them, students will have the chance to either pie Mr. Peterson in the face or shave his head.

8th Grade Trip

Last Tuesday, 8th grade students traveled to the Genoa Fish Hatchery to take a tour with fishery biologists to study our local ecosystems and investigate Lichen and see the conservation efforts for fish in the Midwest. In addition, students took a bus tour that focused on the foundation of our local area and conflicts with local Native American tribes. They stopped to talk about the impact of George Gale on our community, Native American legacy in our area, and discussed the Blackhawk War around Genoa at battle sites.

Learning with Slinkys

8th grade science is currently in their Waves & Technology Information unit. Recently, students used spring toys (Slinkys) to model different types of waves: longitudinal, transverse, traveling and standing. The modeling allowed students to measure frequency, wavelength, amplitude and speed. Students will apply this exploration moving forward in the unit.

WEB Leaders help at Ettrick Elementary Environmental Day

A group of 8th grade WEB leaders recently took a trip to Ettrick Elementary to help out during the school's Environmental Day. The leaders spent time with younger students reading nature-themed stories, going for a short hike, and helping them make seed bombs to plant wildflowers. It was a fun and meaningful way for the WEB crew to show leadership and support younger learners while learning more about the environment together.

ACP Class Write-Up

In the Academic and Career Planning (ACP) class, 7th grade students explore potential careers that match their interests and strengths. Using a website called Xello, they research important details like job responsibilities, required education, and salary expectations. After gathering information, students create a presentation to share what they’ve learned. This project helps them start thinking more seriously about their goals after high school.

School Survey- We want to hear your thoughts!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District, your child’s success is at the heart of everything we do. We're always looking for ways to make our schools even better—and we know that starts with listening to you.

To help us understand what’s working well and where we can grow, we’ve partnered with School Perceptions, an independent research firm, to conduct a short parent survey. Your honest feedback will help guide our next steps and strengthen the connection between home and school.

Keep an eye on your inbox! The survey link will be emailed out on April 16 and will remain open through April 30 at 5:00 PM. If you don’t see it, be sure to check your spam or junk folder. If you still don't see it, feel free to reach out to me.

Your voice matters—and your input can make a big difference. Thank you for taking a few minutes to share your thoughts and help us continue building a school community we can all be proud of.

School Perceptions will send out their message with the link and an individual access code on the 16th.

FCCLA State

This month, several of our middle school students proudly represented our school at the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) State Leadership Conference. They joined over 700 students from across the state in a weekend filled with competitions, workshops, and leadership activities.

The FCCLA State Leadership Conference is an incredible opportunity for students to build confidence, strengthen teamwork skills, and explore careers in family and consumer sciences. Through their participation, our students demonstrated dedication, creativity, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

Art Display

Step into the imagination of our young artists! Our current display case features a vibrant collection of student artwork created through a variety of media and techniques. From bold mixed-media pieces to thoughtful drawings and monochromatic paintings, each work tells a story of exploration, experimentation, and personal expression. These pieces reflect the creative process students engage in every day—thinking like artists, making choices, taking risks, and developing their ideas with care and intention. We’re proud to showcase their unique voices and celebrate the incredible talent growing in our art room!

Tornado Drill Practice

These drill comes as April 7-11 marks Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week.

With the season of spring comes an increased risk of dangerous storms, flooding and high winds. Officials emphasize the importance of these types of drills.

“It is essential people take time during this important week to ensure each Wisconsinite knows what to do when a tornado warning or severe storm is in their area,” said Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle. “During tornado drills, we encourage families, businesses, and schools to spend a few minutes going over their plans and identify.

The G-E-T Middle School practiced our drill this last Friday, April 11. Students did a great job getting to the places they needed to be and followed safety protocol.

Standard Based Grading

  1. A few years ago our middle school moved to standard based grading. The idea and premise behind that move was to do three things: (1) Have a better understanding of students learning for reteaching and adjusting teaching practices, (2) provide parents with a better understanding of where their students are at and (3) allow students to be able to identify where they are at in their learning progression. After listening to feedback the last few years, we have decided to readjust how we report back on those standards for next school year. We are still planning on using standards to report a student's progress but want to explore the idea of using percentages and traditional letter grades that would allow parents to have a better understanding.

What I am looking for is a few parents that would be willing to meet with us and go over our new plan and give us feedback. If you would be willing to do so, please respond to this link.Thank you for your time.

On March 19th and 20th, Mrs. Fawcett and Mrs. Torud attended a “Teaching the Holocaust Workshop” at Viterbo University. They had the pleasure of listening to many different people from around the world who have a profound and wide understanding of the historic event. One of their favorite parts of the workshop was hearing from a Holocaust survivor, Peter Fiegl. The experience of hearing first-hand stories is becoming increasingly precious, as not many survivors are still alive today. These two teachers are coming away from the Holocaust workshop with new activities and lessons to do with students to deepen their understanding of The Holocaust.

Europe Trip

Hello Middle School Parents!

I'm Louis Hurd, a social studies teacher at the high school, and I am looking forward to leading an overseas trip to France and Germany in June of 2027. This trip is World War II themed in nature, but there will be lots of opportunities for cultural experiences. There is an informational meeting on Wednesday February 5th at 6pm in the High School PAC. I will share some brief itinerary items with you now....We will stand where they stood on the Normandy Beaches, visit the Caen Memorial and American Cemetery at Colleville, spend a couple days in Paris and view all the major sites including Versailles Palace and the Eiffel Tower, walk through the forests at Bastogne, travel onto Cologne, Germany and then to Berlin. We will stand at the remnants of the Wall and Brandenburg Gate, sit in the courtrooms at Nuremberg, reflect at Dachau concentration camp, tour Munich, and finish with a sobering tour of Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat at Obersalzberg. It truly is the trip of a lifetime that you could give to your child or share together and come along for the ride. Please consider joining us at our informational meeting on February 5th. Thanks!

Maps!

Sixth-grade Social Studies students began working on thematic maps in late November and finished them after returning from holiday break. Students chose a theme and developed map elements around that theme. Required items included: a map scale, key, cities, roadways, bodies of water, landforms, and products that their country exported. They did a rough draft before completing their map on a large piece of tagboard. Students also created questions for their classmates to answer using their maps. Students produced high-quality maps that showed a variety of themes. Great job, sixth-graders!

New 8th Grade Math Teacher

Hi everyone,

I hope this email finds you well. We are transitioning in a teaching change that I want you to be aware of. Our 8th grade math teacher, Brenden Klish, is moving up to the high school to cover an open position there. He has been working an overload the first half of the year covering one of their classes and has made the decision that fits his teaching interests the best. We then posted his 8th grade position, conducted interviews, and were able to find someone we are very excited about in Ms. Butz. She has been student teaching at Onalaska Middle School in the math department. Below are two letters both from Mr. Klish and Ms. Butz.

Parents and Guardians,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well. I have been given the opportunity to transition into a new position teaching math at the high school. This was a difficult decision for me to make in the middle of the year. I have now worked with your student for the last year. I have built strong relationships and have watched each student grow behaviorally/academically. Being my first year teaching, I can say this group has shaped me into the educator that I am today.

As I step into this new role at the high school, I carry with me the lessons, memories, and growth that I have experienced here. I look forward to continuing to support our students as they transition into high school and beyond.

Brenden Klish

Families and Students,

As you may have already heard from the students, Mr. Klish is unfortunately leaving 8th grade to go teach at the high school. With Mr. Klish leaving, I will now have the opportunity to continue the amazing work you all already completed this year!

Before I start on Monday, I wanted to introduce myself to everyone and give a little background on myself. I am Ms. Butz or Ms. B, whichever is easier for you! I recently graduated from UW-L with a degree in Math Education (4-12) and a minor in Spanish. During my time at UWL, I had the opportunity to run Cross Country and Track for the university as well as study abroad in Spain! I hope to be able to use those experiences to make an engaging and exciting math class for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out! I look forward to working with you all.

Sincerely,

Ms. B

Track and Filed

Middle School track and field is open to 7th and 8th graders who are interested. Practice will begin approximately March 31. An email with a sign up was sent this week to 7th and 8th graders, if they are interested in participating, students should submit this form. If they don't see it in their email, have them check their spam folder.

8th Grade STEAM Roadshow Sparks Innovation!

Yesterday, the 8th Grade STEAM Roadshow rolled into the station, bringing a trainload of creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking! Our students explored the world of robotics and programming, using Sphero RVRs, Bolt+ kits, and Indis to tackle hands-on challenges designed to fuel their curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Like a STEAM train picking up momentum, this exciting experience is part of our mission to inspire "Learning for All, Learning for Life" by equipping students with the tools and confidence to succeed in the 21st century.

A big thank you to our incredible crew of volunteers for making this journey possible and to the Gale Ettrick Trempealeau - GET Educational Foundation for their generous donation, which provided the RVRs and Bolt+ kits. These tools will continue to inspire our students during Makerspace time, and we can’t wait to see how they innovate next!

Salva Dut

6th Graders received a letter from Salva Dut this week. He is the founder of Water for South Sudan. 6th Graders read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park this fall. The book is about Salva Dut's journey of survival during the Sudanese Civil War with themes of faith, perseverance, hope and valuing education.

The battle objective, strategy, and story of the battle were told, and then students got to throw socks at each other. This week students are writing 1st person perspective journals about the battles, contributions, and reasons for fighting in the Revolutionary War (not pictured).

Card Collection

Dear GET MIddle School Families,

The students in grades 6-8 will be having a Winter Activity Day. One of the activities involves creating greeting cards for the elderly in our communities (possibly nursing homes) or someone in their lives that is special to them. We are asking for donations of unwanted/extra holiday/winter cards. We will cut the back off and dispose of that part of the card. Please bring them to the office at the Middle School or send them with your child.

Kindest Regards,

Tunnel Books

Our talented 6th grade artists have been hard at work creating tunnel books, a three-dimensional art project that truly tells a story! Students explored how art can bring a narrative to life, crafting scenes that draw you in—literally!

This project was packed with creativity and skill-building. Students brainstormed and sketched multiple ideas, refined their drawing techniques, and mastered the art of cutting and layering paper for a dynamic effect. Each tunnel book is a little world filled with imagination and stories waiting to unfold.

A Tribute To Gary Trim

In loving memory of someone whose light we lost far too soon

As some of you may know, our district has experienced the loss of an incredible staff member who profoundly impacted countless lives. Gary Trim died unexpectedly on Tuesday.

Gary served as a bus driver in our district for many years and was a true champion and genuine supporter of the many students fortunate enough to ride his bus. His kindness, encouragement, and unwavering care left an immeasurable mark on thousands of students over the years. The loss of his spirit will be deeply felt throughout the G-E-T community.

Please keep Gary's family and all those who knew and worked with him in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.

If you need someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Student Services office for additional support. If you feel interested in writing out a note about Gary for his family, there are sheets available in the Student Services office. Together, we will honor Gary’s memory and support one another as a community.

Middle school students wear jerseys in Gary's honor.

Digital Citizenship Week

Dear Families,

October 14th through the 18th is Digital Citizenship Week. This is an important time to recognize the importance of our students learning how to be responsible, safe, and respectful online and with the digital devices they encounter every day. Our goal is to help them navigate the digital world with confidence, understanding how to protect their privacy, make informed decisions, and treat others with kindness online. This year we have started an initiative to be more mindful in our approach of teaching these lessons to our students.

We encourage you to take part in these conversations at home, too. Below are some helpful resources to support your child in becoming a responsible digital citizen:

  • Common Sense Media: Digital Citizenship for Families - Tools and tips for parents on navigating technology and media with their children.
  • Family Media Agreement: Create Your Own Family Media Plan - Use the appropriate Common Sense Media Family Media Agreement to set boundaries and discuss digital media with your children.
  • Google's Be Internet Awesome: Family Guide - Fun and engaging activities to help your child learn the fundamentals of digital safety.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to promote safe and positive digital experiences for all students!

Technology Ambassadors

These two students are getting a certificate from Rob Kamrowski, district technology integration specialist, for being great technology ambassadors. Mr. Kamrowski came and talked to the applied communications class about analyzing internet sources and evaluating credibility using the SIFT method in Applied Communications. Then these two students taught the class how to find and use a “true and trusted” website they found through BadgerLink that had many useful features for our inquiry project. Way to go boys!

Just Surviving! 6th Grade Social Studies

We are just beginning Unit 2: Early Peoples, in which we will focus our studies on answering the essential question of “Why was the invention of farming revolutionary?”. This week, sixth-graders explored factors that contributed to the formation of early human societies in a multi-day activity. To “survive,” they needed to secure food (hunting or farming), shelter, and water within a limited amount of time, first as individuals and then as members of a group.

While most students “survived” on the individual day, the majority of students seemed to find the group day to be less stressful and much easier to secure food, shelter, and water by working together. Many students discovered that geographical factors, such as distance from the river, could have a significant impact on the time available to complete all the tasks. They also experienced how the invention of the pottery wheel could assist with daily survival tasks. Please ask your child about their experiences gathering water, finding food, and building shelters this week.

ALICE LETTER

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Our school district implements a safety plan for how we conduct lockdown or security drills. Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Middle School will be practicing with the training and techniques in the weeks to come.

Schools drill for various scenarios throughout the year. For example, we run a fire drill nine times a year and also practice tornado drills.

We also have had procedures in the unlikely event of an intruder at the middle school. We are looking at ways that could make our staff and students safer should we ever have to face this type of crisis.

We will continue to have the entire building locked during the school day and require visitors to be buzzed into the office. The office staff will continue to have to allow anyone through the office into the rest of the building.

We will also begin preparing our staff and students for other scenarios. The drills will be determined by situations that could possibly happen during the school day such as an upset person in the classroom or at recess, an upset person in the hallway or office, or an unsafe situation happening in the surrounding community.

The focus of our drills is on safety and is not intended to scare the students. Before we conduct a drill, we will clearly explain that it is a drill and not a real situation. We do all drills so that we are safer should a real situation occur, and that just like a fire or tornado drill, our chances of ever doing the drill in a real situation are very minimal; however, we want to be prepared.

Here is a brief description of some of the terminology we may use with students and the acronym ALICE. Alert means to let people know of the situation and to be ready. Inform means to keep letting each other know what is going on and where an intruder might be located or direction they are moving. Evacuate will consist of students leaving the building and running to a rally point. Lockdown is traditionally what has been done in the past; however, students will learn not just to hide in a corner of a locked classroom, but other places in their rooms that are not within view of an unsafe person entering. Barricading will teach students to place items in front of their classroom door to prevent an unsafe person from entering the classroom. Counter has the intent of doing something unexpected. For example, we will be teaching middle school students to throw small classroom items at an unsafe person to distract their thinking, thus allowing more time to evacuate the room.

We hope students and parents know that the focus is on staying safe and empowering students and our staff to make quick decisions, like we do in fire drills and tornado drills. If you believe that your child has had prior experiences that might make these procedures and training difficult, please don’t be afraid to contact us.

As always, please feel free to call me with any questions at 608-582-3500.

Best regards,

Pete Peterson

Caught Being Good

Congrats to this week's Caught Being Good winners. Way to go middle school students!

Target Time

Dear Middle School Families,

The goal at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Middle School is to achieve high levels of learning for all students. This directly correlates with our Middle School mission - “Every Student, Every Need”. As we work toward meeting the needs of all of our students, we are adding some additional time for math and English Language Arts (ELA) called Target Time. The happens once a day for thirty minutes for ELA and a second thirty minutes per day for math. The purpose of this time is to give students the right support for their current level of understanding and proficiency.

Reflecting on the data from our STAR and Forward assessments, we have realized that there are student needs at every level. That being said, Target Time provides us a foundation to work closely with students to provide them support to enrich their knowledge in the math and ELA content areas. During this time, students will get to work in small groups with other students at their proficiency level on specific skills and concepts to support end of year mastery. We strongly believe that this allotted time will be very beneficial as it offers students a smaller student-to-teacher ratio, more time to develop understanding and confidence, varied explanations, etc. Target Time is an extension of the core math and ELA classroom; the work that students will do is a continuation from the power standards that stem directly from classroom instruction. Enrichment, additional practice of core instruction, or intervention support will all take place during this time depending on student needs – all students will be receiving something “on target” to achieve the goal of students working towards proficiency and beyond in our power standards.

On Wednesdays this year, that Target Time is a little different. It is a larger block of time at the end of the day. That time (about 45 mins.) will be used for large group band or choir along with other engagement opportunities for students. We will also utilized that time to help students catch up with school work.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.

Attendance

Dear Families,

During the 2024 -2025 school year, we are deeply grateful to each and every one of you for your invaluable contributions in restoring a routine for showing up to school and supporting students and families. School attendance continues to be a significant concern across our nation; we will again this year look to engage students and families in helping reduce chronic absenteeism.

Your efforts to ensure regular school attendance when your child is healthy not only play a significant role in their academic and social development but also empowers them. Please continue to encourage them to show up to class when school is in session, as this is a responsibility we all share in their growth and success.

Every school day is a precious opportunity for students to learn and connect with their peers and teachers. Your role in ensuring their regular attendance is crucial in making these opportunities count. We have provided a list of our days off to help with your school-year planning. We encourage you to plan vacations around these days to help with prolonged absences.

We thank:

● Our students and their families who do their best to show up daily, even when it isn’t easy.

● Our teachers who go above and beyond to make school a welcoming and safe place for all students to learn.

● Our administrators who help us work together to ensure we create a physically and emotionally safe and engaging learning environment.

● Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.

If your family or your child needs support, please reach out to your school counselor or principal. This information can be found on getsd.org

Thank you for partnering with us!

Sincerely,

Pete Peterson - G-E-T Middle School Principal
