Sometimes, you just can't make things up! On Friday, our annual Terry Fox run assembly was underway when our neighbouring school reached out to our front office to inform us that a moose had beaten us out to the track and was galloping his way through our playground! When I arrived outside I spotted that same moose then taking a bit of a rest in the shade and then he continued to gallop his way throughout our field. In the spirit of safety, we informed our students that we were unable to proceed outdoors for our Terry Fox run. Our students did such a fantastic job that the shift in plan was the best to ensure safety for not only the young moose, but also us. We also then remained inside for an indoor recess. Around 1:00 p.m. it was confirmed with us that the moose had moved out of our area. How Canadian is that?!

Look at us go! In the picture you'll see how many PAWSitives we given out in the month of September! Bravo les Grizzlies!

Please join us at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29 for our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation assembly in the gym. Thank you to Mme Boswell, Mme Grummett, and our student emcees for running this event for us!

Wednesday is Dress Like a Book Character today! We can't wait to see everyone's creative ideas!

Thursday, Oct. 2 we have yet another important assembly. Please join us at 9:00 a.m. for our first Monthly Assembly of the year. This assembly gives us the chance to celebrate the hard work of our students. Each month teachers pick students who are demonstrating: citizenship, French speaking and literacy skills on a consistent basis in their classes and throughout our school. We also have the chance during our assemblies to learn more about the Seven Sacred Teachings. Class 51 will be presenting this month. Finally, Mme Victoria will also have a musical performance for us. Class will be presenting this time. Please join us if you're able to!

Finally, our amazing Mme Victoria is so much more than our music teacher! Mme Victoria also helps our teachers and students out with some extra literacy support. She works with our grades 1, 2, and 3 teachers to support phonological sound recognition, decoding, and reading skills. She will begin this important work in our classes on Oct. 6.

Reminders: there is no school for students and staff on Tuesday, Sept. 30 as it is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and there is no school for students on Friday, Oct. 3 as all staff will be engaged in Professional Learning.

Have a great week everyone!

Battle of the Books

We have started another season of Battle of the Books for grades 4 - 6. Students who have chosen to participate need to read the six chosen books before the battle that will take place some time near the end of February. We will be battling against Ardrossan Elementary in March again. We meet, if they choose, Wednesdays at lunch recess to read, discus the books and practice questions.

The students are welcome to read the books in another format or listen to the audiobooks although we do not have those available in our library for them, only the paper copies are in our library. These are the books that each grade level reads.

Grade 4: Pie by Sarah Weeks; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl; Confessions of an Imaginary Friend by Michelle Cuevas; Dorko the Magnificent by Andrea Beaty; The Wild Robot by Peter Brown; and Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman.

Grade 5: Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein; Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage; Matilda by Roald Dahl; Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley; F.R.A.M.E.D.! by James Ponti; and The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm.

Grade 6: The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier; When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead; The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester; Firegirl by Tony Abbott; The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley; and Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Jennifer.Milanovic@eips.ca.

Read-In Week

Read-In Week takes place between October 6-10. This year’s theme is Books and Bytes, chosen to highlight the many different ways people read books: traditional paper books, e-books and audiobooks. We are looking for volunteer readers to come and read to our students. You can choose to read anything you want, age appropriate, of course. Sometimes the older students like to have a chapter or part of a chapter read to them from a longer book but they do still enjoy a good picture book, too! You can choose your own books or ask me to find something from our library. French or English readers are both welcome as well as for any program in the school. We take volunteers who will read to one class or all the classes and anything in between. If you are interested in volunteering some time that week, please contact Jennifer.Milanovic@eips.ca so I can schedule you a time!

Forest of Reading for Adults

Remember! The best way to have your children read is to have them see you read! Students who have parents that read visibly are more likely to choose reading themselves as they see it as a valuable use of time.

The time has come to vote in the adult portion of the Forest of Reading. If you had a chance to read any of the titles from this year’s nominees, send me an email with your choice to Jennifer.Milanovic@eips.ca. Emails must be received by September 28 in order for me to submit them on time. https://forestofreading.com/evergreen-2025-nominees/

New lists will be announced for next year, not just the adult books but the ones for children as well, in October. Our school plans to run this program for this upcoming year again.

Division Code of Conduct

EIPS has three administrative procedures (APs) that address the Division’s code of conduct:

· AP 311: Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning Environments for Students

· AP 350: Student Code of Conduct

· AP 351: Student Conduct on School Buses

The Division, and École Parc Élémentaire, are committed to ensuring all members of the school community are provided with welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments that respect diversity and foster a sense of belonging. EIPS encourages all students, staff and families to review the procedures to understand and practice the conduct expected throughout the Division.

Video surveillance at schools and on buses

Did you know each EIPS bus is equipped with video surveillance, and many school sites have video monitoring equipment?

Video surveillance and equipment help:

· ensure the safety of all students, staff, drivers and property; and

· discourage destructive acts.

As needed, EIPS school administration and Student Transportation staff review video recordings, in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act. The recordings assist schools and the Division with monitoring student and driver conduct and may be used as evidence in a disciplinary matter.

For more information about the collection, use and disclosure of personal information, contact the EIPS FOIP Co-ordinator at 780-464-3477.
