State Testing State Testing

Both the seventh and eighth grade students will be sitting for the Math and English Language Arts NJSLA tests the week of May 19, next week!. Students should be prepared for each day by getting a good night’s sleep, eating a good breakfast, and bringing their fully charged chromebook to school for each day of the testing.

Students in both 7th and 8th grade will take one section of English-Language Arts or Math each day of the week. Those students who typically begin the day in the high school (mainly JROTC students) should report to the middle school each day during testing.

Good luck to our students on the testing.

The middle school agriculture students planted the last of the red oak saplings they have. In many years, the shade by the athletic fields will come from the efforts of these students.

Construction at the High School Construction at the High School

The high school has begun construction work on the auditorium. There may be construction traffic that interferes with the regular traffic flow. Please plan accordingly and be sure to allot extra time to arrive at school for parents who are dropping their children off to school.

No Place for Hate Activity No Place for Hate Activity

Our No Place for Hate group has organized an activity next week, focusing on the concept of Stereotypes and using the movie Zootopia as a basis for the conversation. During lunches next week, we will have the movie on for students to watch while they are eating lunch. Then, on Friday, in social studies classes there will be a follow up activity, found HERE, about the concepts of stereotypes, especially as they relate to the movie.

Clinical Corner Clinical Corner

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I came across an article about athletes and mental health that I thought would be beneficial to be aware of. While the article is titled “Student Athlete Mental Health: Tips for Parents and Coaches”, there is no doubt that teachers that work with this population should know about this too. To summarize the article, the author, Valerie Valle, Psy.D., writes that playing sports is a two-sided coin. On one side, sports can improve self-esteem, increase physical activity, and even improve sleep and dietary habits. Student athletes can be more motivated to do better academically too as they are setting goals for themselves.

However, on the flip side, there can be negative effects from sports on athletes’ mental health. Some negatives include associating winning with self-worth, having an unhealthy sense of perfectionism, experiencing stress and anxiety when they make a mistake and overall feeling overwhelmed trying to balance the demands of the sport with the rest of their lives. Depression can also develop and if you see your child/student/player losing interest in their sport along with a change in appetite or sleep they may need to be monitored. Another red flag to watch out for is burnout-going to practice without the usual enthusiasm or expressing a desire to quit can be some symptoms.

Valle reports that the best thing adults who support athletes can do is listen and acknowledge their feelings. “I’ve noticed that …” is a great place for supportive adults to start. Just a couple of the many coping skills she recommends are making time for breaks and trying to keep fun as part of the equation of sports. For the full article click here.
