26-27 Lower School News - Week 5
September 18, 2026

From the Director of Lower School
September 25, 2026
As we close out our fifth week of school, I have been reflecting on the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors and the many lessons his journey offers our children. Joseph’s story reminds us that our paths are not always easy or predictable. He experienced disappointment, uncertainty, and challenges along the way, yet those difficult moments became part of a much bigger story of growth, purpose, faith, and perseverance.
It also makes me think of Dolly Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors,” which shares a beautiful message about gratitude, love, and recognizing that something does not have to look perfect—or be easy—to hold tremendous value.
That feels especially meaningful as we enter this part of the school year.
By the fifth week, the excitement and newness of the beginning of school starts to settle, routines become more established, and we begin to see those important moments of productive struggle emerge. A child may encounter a math concept that takes a little longer to understand. Reading may require more perseverance. Friendships may need navigating. A new responsibility may feel challenging. These are not interruptions to the learning journey—they are part of the learning journey.
Our goal is not to remove every struggle from our students' paths, but to walk alongside them as they learn to persist, problem-solve, ask for help, try again, and discover what they are capable of accomplishing. Just like a coat made from many different pieces, each success, mistake, challenge, relationship, and joyful moment becomes part of the story our children are creating this year.
And speaking of Dolly Parton, our Lower School staff had a little fun this week with our very own “Undercover” Spirit Day celebrating Dolly’s incredible legacy and work—especially her commitment to literacy and helping children develop a love of reading.
Throughout the week, our Tigers also experienced the joy of reading in so many special ways—from mystery readers and partner reads to classroom read-alouds and time spent sharing books together. The photos below capture some of those joyful moments and the connections that are created when children experience reading as something meaningful, engaging, and fun.
Behind the denim, sparkle, and country flair was something we care deeply about at St. Luke’s: creating joyful learning experiences that remind our Tigers that reading matters, learning matters, and they matter.
Thank you for continuing to partner with us through every colorful part of this year’s journey. We are so proud of our Tigers and look forward to all the growth, discovery, and joyful learning still ahead!

The St. Luke's Way - Shoutouts
Emilia demonstrates the St. Luke's way through her small actions that she may think go unnoticed. Over the past several weeks, I have overheard Emilia using helpful and encouraging words with her friends, additionally she is quick to solve problems without being asked or looking for recognition afterwards. This week, I noticed she quietly cleaned up a small spill on her lunch table. It wasn't her spill, but she recognized a problem and solved it without being asked. Her humility. and thoughtfulness makes our classroom and school a better place to be. - Mrs. Ray
Margaret consistently displays creativity, intellectual risk taking and faith in the Innovation Lab through her design work. Margaret can look at a variety of objects and put a thoughtful action plan in place, having faith in her abilities as an artist and engineer that her process will meet her goal. She has faith in her heavenly gifts and we are so blessed to share in them at St. Luke’s. - Mrs. Weller

Your Child’s Classroom, Just a Click Away on Seesaw
Don’t forget to check Seesaw each day! Our teachers regularly share snapshots of classroom learning, special moments, and student accomplishments. It’s a wonderful way to get a peek into your child’s day, stay connected to what they are learning, and celebrate both the small joys and big wins together.

Elementary Girls Lacrosse Program Inquiry
Girls lacrosse is a fast-paced, non-contact sport that builds confidence, coordination, agility, and camaraderie. And with many players in San Antonio learning the game together, no previous lacrosse experience is necessary!
The girls lacrosse season runs in the Spring, and we’ll be sharing more information at a later date. In the meantime, if your child is interested in playing, please fill out the interest form below!
This year will serve as a pilot season for girls lacrosse at St. Luke’s. We’re excited to see our students embrace the sport, build a team, and grow together. If the program is a successful fit for our community, we look forward to continuing to build and offer lacrosse at St. Luke’s in the years ahead.
Practices and games will not conflict with other St. Luke’s sports. Games will be held on weekends, allowing our Tigers to participate in multiple sports throughout the year.
We can’t wait to see our Tigers take the field!
Dress Uniform (1st-4th)
On Wednesdays and other special occasions, our students elevate their everyday uniform by wearing what we call Dress Uniform. These days are an opportunity to teach students that how we present ourselves can reflect respect—for our school, our traditions, our community, and the occasion. Wearing Dress Uniform also helps students practice responsibility, attention to detail, and pride in representing St. Luke’s.
Please review the images below (or the guide above) to ensure all Dress Uniform guidelines are followed.
