A Note From Dr. Neubeck

This week, we posted an opening for an Executive Director of Finance and Operations because our present director, Todd Lechtenberg, will be leaving for another position. I just wanted to take this moment to thank Todd for all of the time and effort that he has put into the Byron School District over the last 4 years. His work has helped our district to stay on budget and give our staff many of the materials they need to succeed. He effectively presented information to the public during that last referendum votes and continues to work closely with our construction partners to ensure that the $44M construction project is within the budget.

Being a finance director in schools is a daunting position and I have been told that one is really not prepared for the amount of codes and laws that are a part of school finance. Some people have trouble balancing their own checkbook, but Todd managed a $30M budget for our district. Even though Byron continues to be in the bottom 10 districts in the State for student funding, we have continued to add or break even for our fund balance. I recently saw data from last year's financial audits of area school districts that showed many districts lost money in their fund balance (savings account) by as much as 57%. Under Todd's leadership, we increased our fund balance by 1.3%. This may not seem like much but it was still adding money in a time where prices have gone up considerably.

Byron Public Schools has much to offer to a person who is interested in this position. We have an adequate fund balance, our collective bargaining agreements are completed, our school district is growing, and the staff and families of Byron are terrific to work with as we navigate school finance and educate our youth. If you know of someone with a finance and accounting background and would be great for a Byron Schools, please have them check out our website or reach out to me. I hope you have a great week.

Go Bears!

On December 9th Byron High School students took the opportunity to join Art Team members to volunteer at Christmas Anonymous at Christ United Methodist Church. Students escorted and helped individuals shop for their families. This event is run solely by volunteers and donations and helps about 600 Olmsted County families in need a year.

Byron Public Schools district office staff “gifted” their Secret Santa a game to donate for BHS Game of Giving campaign. We chose a game we thought they’d enjoy as a child! A great way to give back and celebrate the Holidays!
