A NOTE FROM MRS. B A NOTE FROM MRS. B

Howdy, Bronco Family! Fall is almost upon us…according to the calendar. Mornings sometime say “Hello, Fall”, but afternoons are telling us “Summer isn’t going anywhere just yet”. Many exciting things both in and out of the classroom are gearing up. The students continue to work hard. Some classes have fieldtrips scheduled. Teachers are putting their UIL teams together to get ready for contest in November. Great things continue to happen at Burleson Elementary!

I want to be real with you all about something important. One skill that continues to be emphasized and taught in every grade level is reading. Reading is a lifelong skill for everyone. Did you know that it begins before a child is even able to speak? Reading to a baby provides the building blocks they need for language development. A study found that babies and small children who are read to everyday are exposed to approximately 78,000 words each year. That means children who are read to, from birth to 5 years of age, are being exposed to at least 1.4 million words. If a student reads or is read to at least 20 minutes daily, he or she is exposed to 1.8 million words per year. This builds vocabulary, fluency (how fast one reads accurately), and comprehension. This not only develops strong readers; it also has a hand in academic success across the board. So, let’s all pick up a book and read!

Remember, you can always find the latest Meadow ISD news on the MISD website and Facebook page, so go check them out! Also, check your kiddo’s backpack and folders for any important paper notes that may have gone home.

Don’t forget to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about what is going on in the classroom. We are always here to help.

It’s ALWAYS great to be a Bronco!

Mrs. B

¡Hola, familia Bronco!

Hello Parents,

Here are a few things that we are working on:

Phonics-Letter Pp, initial sounds, syllables, rhyming words, alliteration, and matching capital letters on an ABC Arc.

Please study the HFW’s in the bag. Test will be on Friday.

Math- We finished up with Unit 2 on comparing numbers 0-5 and identifying which number is more than or less than. We will continue to work on identifying one more than and one fewer than a given number. This week we will continue to work on placing numbers for numbers 0-5.

AR- We have been working on Accelerated reading this past two weeks. The students have been practicing taking AR tests. Students are listening to an Interactive Read Aloud, (IRA) then we think/ pair/ share and answer those comprehension questions together. Then during Reading Stations, the students have been practicing on logging into AR Reading and taking AR tests.

Please send library books back to school, so your child can check out a new book.

Please continue to send water bottles to school.

Thanks,

Mrs. Sanchez

Hola padres,

Gracias, Sra. Sánchez

Super second grade!!

We are still hard at work and setting goals as we go! Their drive is contagious! We are finishing up combinations in phonics and subtracting in math. We are talking about how to better our community in social studies and have started our force and motion unit in science. In writing we are still discussing expository, narrative, and opinion writing. We've become pros at figuring out the type of story we are reading and identifying the important parts. I am so excited to get UIL going, they are working hard practicing their oral reading poem for their tryout, it has been so fun listening to them this week!

Just a few reminders...

  • New spelling list will go home today
  • Sight word test tomorrow
  • Math fact quiz tomorrowThank you for all you do!

Mrs. Alaniz

3rd Grade ELAR

Spelling:

I am continuing to see an overall improvement in our weekly spelling assignments. A few students continue to struggle, and I would ask that all parents help their child to study and practice at home as needed. This week our words all end with a silent final "e."

AR Reading:

Students are beginning to chart their progress on our school AR wall after achieving their first 5 AR points. Some students are struggling to pass tests or have not taken tests on any books yet. Students must read every evening for at least 20 minutes. Again, I would ask that parents monitor this and read with their child to ensure reading comprehension and success on tests.

Reading/Language:

We are continuing to use our online program, Lonestar Learning, for our daily reading and language activities. If you would like to see what this looks like, please reach out to me.

Please contact me anytime with questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Mrs. McCormick

¡Gracias! Sra. McCormick

Math
We are working on interpreting story problems and understanding when we need to add or subtract. This can be tricky, so we are breaking down the story sentence by sentence to find the action or what is happening to the numbers in the story. Don’t forget math fact tests are on Fridays, and make sure your child is studying their math fact cards each night.

Science

We are learning about states of matter. We are observing different objects and classifying them as a solid, liquid, or gas.

Social Studies

We are studying about our Founding Fathers and how they have helped shape the community.

4th Grade Homeroom and Social Studies

Next week our homeroom gets to go make cupcakes in the cafeteria! I think they are going to have so much fun with the 2nd graders. The 4th graders will be paired up with a 2nd grader, and the fourth grader will be the teacher.

In Social Studies, we took a detour from our study of the Regions of Texas and studied the significance of 9/11 in our American History. We created a unique artwork called an Agamograph. Ask your children what they created. Then we researched 9/11, wrote down facts, and each table group wrote a paragraph together. I really enjoyed helping the kids understand what a patriot really is and to identify and honor those that did what they could to save American lives.

4th & 5th Grade ELAR

This week we 'piggy backed' on the Social Studies lessons and conducted research, wrote down facts, and each class or table group organized their facts into a paragraph to go with the Agamograph. If you get a chance to come in the building, I hope you will take a minute to look at our display in the hallway.

Tonight, the students will be bringing home their AR Logs. Please take a look and initial in the parent collum next to the final entry. These kids have been reading like crazy! I am so proud of their efforts.

4th & 5th Grade Math

-In 4th grade, we are adding and subtracting decimals. Soon we will be multiplying 3-digit and 4-digit numbers by a one digit.

-In 5th grade, we just wrapped up long division. Dividing with a 2-digit divisor was difficult for some of us. We will need a little more practice. We did have to start Order of Operation. Some students liked working on these problems. I tell them it is fun to see people prove their answers on Facebook because do not remember the rules.

-Please have your student practice multiplication math facts. Long division was difficult not knowing math facts. Soon we will need to find common denominators and simplify fractions and if we do not know multiplication math facts it is shut down time or not turning in assignments.

Thank you for your support.

Stacy Gamez
