Weather-Related Repairs and Mat Room Update: October Projects in Full Swing

The Sedro-Woolley School District's maintenance team has had a particularly busy month, thanks to the recent heavy rain and wind. Staff worked hard to address several roof leaks and clogged drains, while also tackling the removal of tree limbs and other debris scattered across school grounds.

With temperatures dropping, a significant portion of the team’s efforts also focused on repairing heating units to ensure students and staff remain comfortable as we transition into cooler weather.

One notable incident involved a heating unit at Sedro-Woolley High School, which had to be repaired after parts were stolen in the middle of the night. A photo of the damaged unit shows the ongoing challenges our team faces in maintaining school facilities.

In addition to heating system repairs, the team addressed a plumbing issue by fixing the flush sensor for a urinal—one of many plumbing repairs that occur regularly across our schools.

In another major project, the mat room floor was removed in preparation for replacement next week.

The floor, which had reached the end of its lifespan, had begun to degrade and was also experiencing issues with water coming up through it. The subfloor is now being prepared for the installation of the new floor by a contractor, ensuring the space will soon be ready for use once again.

We are grateful for the ongoing hard work of our maintenance staff, who keep our schools safe, functional and comfortable for everyone.

Cascade Middle School students put research skills to the test with murder mystery activity

Seventh-grade students in Rebecca Lewis and Brenna Zavala’s social studies classes at Cascade Middle School took on the role of detectives Friday, using their research skills to solve a faux murder mystery.

The annual classroom activity encourages students to apply what they've learned throughout the year. Organized into groups, students examined evidence presented at various tables, analyzing clues and cross-referencing information to solve the fictional crime.

At the end of the class period, each group submitted their guess as to who committed the crime, bringing a fun, investigative twist to their studies.

The murder mystery project is designed to not only engage students but also deepen their understanding of the research process in a creative setting.

Founder Visits Sedro-Woolley High School to Inspire Students

Dr. Jose Enriquez, founder of Latinos in Action, visited Sedro-Woolley High School on Tuesday to help students gain a deeper understanding of the program and its mission of empowerment.

During two separate sessions, Enriquez emphasized the value of education and highlighted the importance of each student's contributions. It’s about more than just succeeding academically; it’s about empowering Latino students to lead and serve others.

Rachael Rodriguez, Latinos in Action teacher at Sedro-Woolley High School, said she is pleased with the program’s implementation and has noticed positive changes among the 114 students enrolled in her classes this semester.

“Many students are now striving for college and career readiness, with small but significant improvements, such as better grades, already evident,” Rodriguez said. “This program continues to inspire students to aim higher and achieve their goals.”

Latinos in Action, or LIA, is a program that empowers Latino students to be leaders by focusing on leadership development, cultural pride, academic success and service. Students participate in activities like mentoring younger students, community service, and preparing for college and careers. The program helps students build confidence, celebrate their culture and give back to their communities while achieving academic success.

Breaking free from misinformation

Sedro-Woolley High School English teacher and librarian Linsey Kitchens, Ballard High School teacher Shawn Lee, and Jefferson Elementary School teacher Monica Hodges led a media literacy event this week at Northwest Educational Service District 189 in Anacortes.

The event opened with a powerful quote from former FCC Commissioner Michael Copps:

“The more I grasp the pervasive influence of media on our children, the more I worry about the media literacy gap in our nation's educational curriculum. We need a sustained K-12 media literacy program — something to teach kids not only how to use the media but how the media uses them. Kids need to know how particular messages get crafted and why, what devices are used to hold their attention, and what ideas are left out. In a culture where media is pervasive and invasive, kids need to think critically about what they see, hear, and read. No child's education can be complete without this.”

Teams of participants tackled Loki’s Loop, a misinformation-themed escape room developed by the University of Washington Center for an Informed Public, leading to discussions on critical thinking and media awareness.

Sedro-Woolley High School students Renato Lecca, Kiel Dapiaoen, Luke Hagerty, Adrianna Rodriguez, and Sativia Espinoza traveled to the ESD with Kitchens to present their insights to a group of 25 educators from around the region. The students showcased SIFT, a set of strategies used to evaluate source credibility, verify the accuracy of posts, and trace content back to its origins. Their presentation left a strong impression—one attendee was so inspired that she sent a message to Sedro-Woolley School District Superintendent Dr. Miriam Miralles Mickelson, complimenting the students on their knowledge and professionalism.

Lesley James from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) attended the event to support educators in preparing students to navigate the rapidly changing media landscape. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal has made it a priority to equip students with the tools they need to critically analyze the content they encounter.

Sedro-Woolley RISE will host a prescription drug take-back event on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sedro-Woolley City Hall, 325 Metcalf St. The event offers the public a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. The take-back event supports the Washington State Health Care Authority’s "Starts with One" campaign, which educates young adults, parents, and older adults about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and the importance of safe storage and disposal of prescription opioids.

According to the campaign website, “75% of opioid misuse starts with people using medication that wasn’t prescribed for them — usually taken from a friend or family member.” Safely disposing of medications is a simple step to help prevent misuse. Participating in these take-back events is one thing individuals can do to help address the opioid epidemic and protect their loved ones.

Public Meetings Announced

Sedro-Woolley High School is reviewing the feasibility of its 8-period bell schedule, which has been in place since the 2016-2017 school year to help all students meet state graduation requirements. Given the time that has passed since its adoption, the district believes it is essential to re-evaluate whether the current schedule continues to meet the needs of our students.

District leaders held the first of three informational meetings this past Wednesday. There are two more meetings seeking input:
Tuesday, October 29: Information Night from 6–7 p.m. at the Sedro-Woolley Auditorium
Wednesday, October 30: Information Night from 6–7 p.m. via Zoom: https://swsd.zoom.us/j/82001751994

End of 1st Quarter - November 4 End of 1st Quarter - November 4

Monday, November 4 marks the end of the first quarter for our middle and high school students.
zoom_out_map

Monday, November 4 marks the end of the first quarter for our middle and high school students. Remind your students to finish strong! Turn in any missing work as soon as possible!

Tips for secondary students to find success in their classes:

Stay Organized: Use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of assignments, tests, and important dates. Review it daily to stay on top of work.

Set Goals: At the start of the second quarter, set specific, achievable goals for each class. Whether it's improving grades, participating more, or mastering a challenging topic, having clear goals will help students stay focused.

Establish a Study Routine: Designate a specific time and quiet place for studying each day. Consistency will help reinforce good study habits and ensure students are prepared for upcoming tests and assignments.

Review Class Notes Regularly: Don’t wait until the night before a test to review notes. Go over them weekly to reinforce and identify any areas where extra help may be needed.

Use Online Resources: Take advantage of online tools, such as educational videos, practice quizzes, and websites, to reinforce your understanding of subjects. Many teachers also provide additional resources!

Practice Self-Care: Ensure students are getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and taking breaks when needed. A healthy body and mind contribute to better focus and academic performance.

Get Involved: Encourage students to participate in class discussions or organized study groups. This can make learning more enjoyable and meaningful.

Communicate with Teachers: Encourage students to keep an open line of communication with their teachers. If they’re unsure about an assignment or concept, don't hesitate to ask questions or request clarification.

Reflect on Progress: At the end of each week, encourage your student to take a few minutes to reflect on what went well and what they could improve. Adjust strategies as needed to stay on track.

Encourage your students to incorporate these tips to build a successful second quarter and finish the school year strong!

A Turkey Trot is a fun run or walk event traditionally held around Thanksgiving, often on or just before Thanksgiving Day. The term "Turkey Trot" comes from the holiday's association with turkeys.

At Cascade Middle School, the Turkey Trot is a longstanding tradition for seventh and eighth graders and school staff. Taking place the day before Thanksgiving, the students and staff run from the school's parking lot near Township Street/McGarigle Road to the intersection of McGarigle Road/Fruitdale Road and back. It’s a festive event with a school band playing at the start and finish lines. The Turkey Trot provides an opportunity for the school community to celebrate the holiday spirit.
