NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Roosevelt Families,

Happy New Year from all of us here at Roosevelt Elementary! We hope your families enjoyed a wonderful winter break filled with rest, joy, and quality time together. As we begin 2026, we're excited to welcome students back to school and dive into an engaging second half of the school year. January brings fresh opportunities for learning, growth, and building stronger connections within our school community.

January marks an important milestone in our reading programs across all grade levels. Teachers will be conducting mid-year reading assessments to celebrate student progress and identify areas for continued support. We encourage families to maintain daily reading habits at home, as consistent practice during these winter months significantly impacts student achievement. Consider setting up cozy reading nooks and exploring new genres together as a family activity.

Our Booster Club will also be hosting a Read-A-Thon this month to support ongoing reading growth on Thursday, January 22nd from 6:00-7:00! If you would like to volunteer to help or be a part of the preparation, our Booster Club will meet on January 15th at 5:30, please consider attending!

Attendance Matters - Every Day Counts

Building Strong Attendance Habits - Regular school attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success, and January is an excellent time to reinforce positive attendance habits for the new year. We are hosting a class Attendance Challenge this month, with the classes with the highest attendance earning whole-class prizes. Research shows that students who miss just two days per month can fall behind academically, making it difficult to catch up on essential skills and concepts. We understand that winter weather and seasonal illnesses can present challenges, but we encourage families to prioritize school attendance whenever possible and communicate with us when circumstances require absences.

When students attend school consistently, they benefit from daily instruction, peer interactions, and the routine that supports their social and emotional development. School begins at 8:45 each day, if a student arrives after this they are considered tardy. Parents have begun receiving notices for tardies and absences via Parent Square–if your student has accumulated more than three tardies or absences in a month, you will begin receiving notifications. If your child must be absent due to illness, please call the main office by 9:00 AM to report the absence, and we'll work with you to ensure they receive any missed assignments or important information.

Health and Safety Reminders

Winter Weather Protocols - Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for cold weather, including warm coats, hats, gloves, and sturdy shoes. We continue outdoor recess when temperatures are above 20°F, so proper clothing helps students stay comfortable and engaged during play time. Keep extra mittens and hats in backpacks, as these items are easily misplaced during busy school days.

Illness Prevention - January often brings increased cases of winter illnesses. Please keep children home if they have fever, persistent cough, or other symptoms that might affect their learning or spread to classmates. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school. We appreciate your partnership in maintaining a healthy learning environment for everyone.

Just a reminder- If you are sending birthday treats for your child to celebrate with their classmates, please contact their classroom teacher prior to set up a good time and/or confirm it works with the classroom schedule. Treats must be store-purchased.

Thank you, and let’s have an amazing January! Welcome to 2026!
