Cougar News - Week of 8/28/23
Letter from Ms. Bedford
Hello Smallville,
This second week has been filled with a lot of great energy! Our Cougars have been diving into blended learning opportunities and getting more into a daily routine. During our daily announcements, I have been sharing words of encouragement, some of my favorite quotes, and ways to stay present in life in a series I have titled, “ Bedford’s Blissful Moments.”
This week, I shared five ways to encourage people around us. Throughout this school year, we will all face positives and challenges. We will win some and we will lose some, but throughout all of these seasons we can be a support for one another. What is unique about life is that we do not always know what season an individual is living at that moment we encounter them. When we all take on a lens of encouragement, we will see far more wins than losses. In the words of Ann Frank, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Let’s all continue to show our positive, encouraging Cougar spirit!
I’m excited to see everyone next Wednesday, August 30th at Back to School Night and our PTA meeting! This is an excellent time to meet the PTA Board members, join the PTA, and buy school gear for your Cougar. Our staff is excited to meet with all of you and share their classroom information. Have a great weekend!
Stay Present Cougars,
Bedford

A Message from the nurse
Hello Parents,
All medications require a signed medical permission form along with the parent signing the permission form. Only epipens, inhalers, and diabetic meds/supplies can be carried with a valid order, all other medications must be kept in the nurses office. Immunizations will be worked on over the next few weeks, and we will let you know if your student needs any vaccinations. There is a 30 day grace period for any necessary shots before the student cannot attend class. Health screenings to include vision/hearing/scoliosis will be conducted throughout the year. Please email alana.bejarano@austinisd.org if you do not want your student screened. Per Texas law, you must provide the screenings to the school from your pediatrician should you not want them screened on campus. Please feel free to stop by the nurses office for any questions.
Thank you,
Alana Bejarano RN

House Bill 114
The Austin ISD Student Success Guide (Student Code of Conduct) is now available on the Austin ISD District website for students, parents, and guardians to review. One important legislative update is that ALL e-cigarettes (THC and Tobacco) are prohibited. House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student possesses, uses, is under the influence, sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette (new) while on campus, within 300 feet of school property, or at a school-related event. Under Austin ISD guidelines, this is a 20-day DAEP placement. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to talk to their students about this new policy and review the Student Success Guide to help keep our schools safe for students and staff. For resources to use when talking with your student about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes visit https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/.
