Let's talk about browser tabs...

Does having too many browser (Chrome, Safari) tabs open at once strain my computer? YES! It will lower your battery use and also overtax the memory and the computer will not run as well as it should.

Can I manage my tabs in an effective way? YES! I will list a few strategies below that can help you organize your tabs in Chrome and Safari.

Chrome:

  • To create a separate window and have two windows side by side, click on one of the tabs and drag it down until it opens in a separate window, allowing you to have two windows side by side or on a separate monitor.
  • You can group your tabs. Right click on a tab and create a new group with a color. You can then add all tabs for one topic into that group.
  • Booksmarks! Bookmarks are a great way to organize things that you want to keep referring to often. In Chrome, simply click on the star in the browser window and then add that tab to a folder, or straight to your 'bookmarks bar' which is under your browser window.
  • To organize your bookmarks into folders in Chrome, this article can help. I have folders for my classes, advisory, Ed Tech, sports and more. Super useful.
  • To "pin" a browser tab, right-click (or two-finger click on a mac) and select "pin". This will move the browser tab to the left and make it smaller. To unpin, just right-click again.
  • To create a shortcut for a website on a Windows device, use the three dots on the top right, go to other tools, create shortcut (which places it on the desktop) then you can drag that shortcut to your task bar.

Safari:

  • If you are working on a Mac, creating shortcuts is easy with Safari. I keep icons on my toolbar on my Mac for Gmail and Blackbaud to get to those sites quickly. Simply highlight the web address in the browser and drag it to the right side of your toolbar below (it must be to the right of the line to the others. A globe will appear which shows the website when you hover over it.)
  • You can also add bookmarks in Safari. HERE is a helpful article that covers both iPad and Mac bookmarks.

Tab Tools: There are tools out there to help. OneTab takes your tabs and turns them into one list that is easy to manage. (Here's how it works). There are more tools out there, (Tabli, Tab Snooze.. just ask!
