Happy spring break!

I hope you all have a restful spring break whether you are traveling or having a staycation. If you are looking for some college/career related things to do on your break, here is a little list:

  1. Juniors- if you are planning to attend a college/university, lighten the stress of next year by creating a college application timeline.
  2. Traveling somewhere? Look into the colleges/universities around you and take a college tour.
  3. Complete a CRLE by volunteering during spring break. You can find some great opportunities here
  4. Plan your summer. There are many interesting summer opportunities you can take advantage of including internships, summer jobs, summer programs, and camps. What interests you?

The College & Career Center is open to welcome students during Support Seminars, lunch, and after school! You are able to just pop in during lunch and after school, however, you will need to sign up for Support Seminar through Flexi Sched. The College & Career Center is next to Joe’s Boathouse. You are also welcome to schedule an appointment with Ms. Stevie at your convenience.

Check it out! Do you see the pennant of your future college?

Laker Talks, A Career Series

The week we get back from spring break, we will be having Laker Talks on both Tuesday and Wednesday! On Tuesday, April 4th, we have fellow Laker (class of '91) Kari Chisolm coming to speak with you. His class agitated the administration so much with their activism, the Political Action Seminar was created which led him to his career at Mandate Media , a political consulting firm.

In addition, we were able to reschedule Karen Simon for Wednesday, April 5th. She is the Global Partners Program Manager at Siemens who would like to speak with you about informational interviewing and how to get the internship/job you want!

Make sure to sign up for support seminar on Tuesday, April 4th & Wednesday, April 5th with Alves and be in the auditorium before 10 so we can make the most of our time!

A Word About Laker Talk CRLE Opportunity

Career-Related Learning Experiences (CRLEs) are structured educational experiences that connect learning to the world beyond the classroom. You need to complete two different learning experiences (minimum 5 hours each) by the end of senior year. Something to note about the two CRLEs is that one requires the performance evaluation on the back of the form to be completed by a supervisor/organizer/teacher and one does not. The Laker Talk CRLE opportunity would be a CRLE that does not require a completed performance evaluation. If you already have a CRLE on file that does not have the performance evaluation, the Laker Talks would not work as a second CRLE.

Even if you have fulfilled your CRLE requirements, I hope that you will attend if one of the many fantastic speakers we have lined up interests you.

Public vs. Private Public vs. Private

The main difference between public and private colleges/universities are where they receive their funding. Public colleges and universities are funded by the federal government while private institutions are supported by their own endowment funds and students' tuition fees. Though private colleges and universities have a more expensive price tag, they often offer generous financial aid packages to cut down on overall cost of attendance.

This article from US News breaks down the differences quite nicely.

The OK Challenge

THE OK CHALLENGE
OK You, the Portland Art Museum and Wieden+Kennedy believe that high school students have the creativity and experience with complex emotions to be creative wellness leaders for other youth and for all of us, so we developed the OK Challenge as a way for young people in Oregon and Washington to share their ideas.

Aside from the possibility of their ideas being shared with thousands of individuals in our community and across the country who use OK You’s website as a resource, the OK Challenge offers your students:
  • The opportunity to think deeply about how creativity can support wellness in their own lives and those of their peers
  • A chance to win cash prizes and art gift bags
  • An invitation to all participants to a culminating celebration at the Portland Art Museum

Trade Highlight of the Month - Vet Tech Trade Highlight of the Month - Vet Tech

Vet Technicians are animal care specialists who assist veterinarians caring for animals and improving an animal's overall health. A love for animals is most important in a veterinary career as you will be working with cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, and other creatures the majority of your day. In addition, you will also need strong communication and interpersonal skills. You will need to interact with owners in many different situations including those high stress and melancholic scenarios of euthanasia. You will need to show kindness and empathy at a very difficult time for owners.

The median salary of a Vet Tech in the state of Oregon is $37,630. Vet Techs are currently in high demand and is expected to grow even more. Job security is high in this field.
