How do I find a major?🙋 How do I find a major?🙋

What are you going to study? Throughout high school, you will access many experiences, classes, and programs to help you decide what path to take. In Naviance, you have surveys and self-discovery activities to match interests and personality traits to careers and majors. Additionally, core classes and electives offer you insight into a wide array of subject areas and potential job tasks. Don't forget to use your extracurricular activities to explore passions and entrepreneurial skills! Learn what the term major means: What is a major? as well as those things called minors: What is a major? What is a minor?

Want help finding a major? Take this brief quiz from Marquette University to start exploring a pathway:Choose Your Major Quiz

What are you going to do with THAT major? College websites offer a wealth of information about careers within a certain major, types of jobs where their alumni are employed, and internship programs.

For example:

  • Careers in Political Science
  • What can I do with a major in art? | SUNY Oswego - Career Services

Undecided? Colleges understand! At one point pre-COVID, the statistic was that close to 2/3s of students changed their major at least 3 times! Many colleges have first year exploratory programs to help students try different courses and gain exposure to various majors. Often, students do not need to declare a major until the end of their sophomore year.

Note: Some universities require students to choose a college (e.g., school of business) when they apply, but students can often be undecided within that college. Certain majors, such as engineering and nursing, are not always possible to switch into after arriving on campus.
