Learn to Swim Information

It is our hope that each child learns swimming technique, safety, and comfort at Hudsonville Swim Lessons. Swimmers passing to the next level must complete certain objectives for each specific lesson grouping. For this reason, some children may repeat some levels more than once; this progression promotes proficiency. Our Instructors understand that children learn in different ways and in different amounts of time. Our main goal is for children to have fun safely while gradually learning more about swimming. Each instructor is knowledgeable of swimming and is certified in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid. Most importantly, our instructors are passionate about teaching swim safety and enjoy kids. If you feel your child may need more attention, private lessons are available.

When coming to swim lessons, no matter the level, your child(ren) should have:

-swimsuit -towel -goggles

Registration opens on May 16

Swim Lesson Level Descriptions

Parent & Child

6 Months ~ 3 Years

Parents & children learn together to increase the child’s comfort level in the water & build a foundation of basic skills. Arm and leg movements are introduced, along with blowing bubbles and balancing in the water. These fun-filled classes bring many smiles to toddlers’ faces!

Level 1

Water Exploration: Beginners ~ Ages 3+

Students learn to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. Elementary swimming skills are taught, which children can further build upon as they progress through the levels.

To start in Level 1, the child must be comfortable without a parent in the water.

Level 2

Primary Skills: Advancing Beginners ~ Ages 4+

Students continue to practice elementary skills while trying to swim more and more with their faces submerged. Once this concept is understood and mastered, they are able to jump off the deep end and swim to safety without a flotation device.

To start in Level 2, the child must be able to swim independently with flotation and put their face in the water.

Level 3

Swim Independently - Adv. Beginner ~ Ages 5+

Students learn to coordinate the front and back crawl (freestyle & backstroke). An emphasis is put on swimming with their faces in the water, starting to breathe to the side.

To start in Level 3, the child must be able to swim independently with some flotation and with their arms coming out of the water & comfortable with their face in the water.

Level 4 -Intro to Competitive Swimming

Master of Freestyle & Backstroke ~ Ages 5+

Students add to their learning and technique of the freestyle & backstroke and build their endurance.

To start in Level 4, the child must be able to swim independently without flotation and, while swimming freestyle, breathe without lifting their head. Students who have successfully completed Level 4 can join the HEAT age group swim team.
