GWA Launches New Website!

We are excited to announce the launch of George Walton Academy’s brand-new website at gwa.com, built on the Finalsite platform! The site has been designed with our families in mind—making it easier than ever to stay connected with all things GWA.

On the homepage, you’ll find Quick Links to the most-used resources like FACTS login, calendars, athletics, directory and lunch menus for easy access. For those browsing on a computer, the desktop view features a full navigation bar across the top, while the mobile view offers a simplified menu—just tap the menu icon for everything you need at your fingertips.

We hope you’ll take some time to explore the new site and enjoy a fresh, user-friendly experience!

*Please note: if you visit the website while on campus using our school internet access - the old site will appear due to a server issue. Some links may show an error message as well. This will be addressed over the weekend.

Learning Together

Our seniors and first graders had the BEST time coming together to explore all things science! First grade has been learning what science is, what it means to be a scientist, and the importance of science safety. They put that knowledge into action—mixing ingredients, experimenting, and creating their very own slime with their seniors right by their side. These moments of learning, laughter, and connection are what make GWA so special. Anytime our seniors and first graders get to spend time together, it’s nothing short of magical!

A Slice of Science

Mrs. Harrison's ninth-grade Biology students conducted an experiment to explore how environmental factors affect mold growth on bread. Bread slices were placed in different conditions—light vs. dark, dry vs. moist, hot vs. cold and observed over several days. Students used their knowledge of the scientific method to develop a hypothesis, determine variables, and record observations, to determine their conclusions. Students examined their bread over several weeks and the results were: mold grew most quickly on bread stored in moist, dark conditions. Bread kept in dry or light environments showed the slowest mold growth. The class summarized the lab with a discussion about food safety.

Math Takes Shape

In third grade math, students have been using Play-Doh to bring the concept of arrays to life! By rolling and shaping dough into equal groups, they can physically build and see the rows and columns that represent multiplication problems. This hands-on activity takes an abstract idea and makes it concrete, helping students of all learning styles — visual, tactile, and kinesthetic — make meaningful connections. It’s a wonderful way to meet the needs of all learners and make math engaging and fun.

Lava Lessons

After completing their volcano unit, the fifth-grade BARK students put their learning into action by building their volcano models from scratch. Using simple materials, they constructed the shape of the volcano and then prepared a chemical solution to simulate magma. When the mixture is poured inside, the volcano erupts, bubbling and overflowing, providing students with a hands-on demonstration of how pressure builds and eruptions occur in real volcanoes. This engaging activity allowed them to see Earth science concepts come to life.

Making a Difference

Members of the GWA football team volunteered this past Sunday to prepare meals to support Monroe First Methodist Church and the Rise Against Hunger (https://riseagainsthunger.org/). Over 22,000 meals were prepared by the football team members and other volunteers in two shifts. The meals will be shipped to Africa to help fight hunger. The boys demonstrated how teamwork comes together to help others in need.

Blooming with Bulldog Spirit

We are especially grateful for Mrs. Harrison’s time and talent in creating the stunning floral arrangements for this year’s Homecoming Court festivities. The flowers added beauty and elegance to the celebration, making the court presentation even more memorable for students, families, and the entire school community.

Mrs. Harrison studied agriculture education at The University of Georgia and taught high school agriculture, including floral design, for 14 years before joining the State Department of Education as the South Region Horticulture Specialist. Her students gained hands-on experience by creating floral designs for universities, businesses, and community organizations. She also led a service-learning project, Friends with Flowers, which delivered arrangements to local elderly citizens and hospice patients.

Using her expertise in floral design and plant science, Mrs. Harrison will create floral arrangements for school activities and events throughout the year. Students in her classes and the Bulldog Aggies student club will gain hands-on experience in the floral industry, learning to identify floral materials, process products, design arrangements, and assist with event setup. Floral design is a unique blend of creativity, agriculture, and science: florists depend on agricultural industries to grow and transport flowers worldwide, while applying plant biology, soil science, and post-harvest care to keep arrangements fresh. In this way, floral design beautifully connects art, agriculture, and plant science—and we’re proud to say that at GWA, we’re growing in ALL areas of science!
