Duck Adoption Day
AP Computer Science Principles had their "Adoption Day" where each student adopted a rubber duck to be used for Rubber Duck Debugging - a common method used by programmers to debug code by explaining it to an inanimate object, usually a rubber duck. They promised to feed their ducks intellectual curiosity by giving it their trickiest bugs, helping them problem solve.
Adventures in Reading and Writing
Our fifth graders in Ms. Franklin's class enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Cheryl Ingle, author of the children's book, The Adventure of the Red Shoe. As students listened to the author read her story aloud – they were tasked with seeing themselves and their own school journey in her story. This was helpful for the class as they get ready to write personal narratives. Mrs. Ingle answered questions from the group, discussed her writing process and elaborated on the message in her story.
Apple Season
Who knew apples could be so exciting! Ms. Sherre’s K4 “angel explorers” wanted to learn all about apples - what are the parts of an apple, what is an orchard, what can we make from apples, do they all taste the same, and what is the GWA connection to the famous Johnny Appleseed (Chapman)?
After reading about apples and taste testing three different types of apples – their questions were answered! Students finished the unit by making homemade applesauce. It was delicious and required no added water or sugar, just apples!
As for the GWA connection, Johnny Appleseeds' great, great, great nephew Ryland Chapman, was our Head of School in the 1980's!
Our annual magazine has been mailed out to the GWA community and we are thrilled to share our latest edition of The Bulldog! It’s a reflection on the past year as we celebrate all things GWA and our 55th birthday! We hope you enjoy it!
Bulldog Battle
Our George Walton Academy competition cheer teams kicked off their season at home in Saturday’s second annual Bulldog Battle! While our Varsity and MS cheer dawgs couldn’t place due to hosting, both teams scored highest in their respective divisions. Jr. Pro brought home a first-place trophy and our senior cheerleaders were recognized to round out the day! Congrats to all our cheer teams on a great showing!
Congratulations, Kylie!
GWA ninth grader and varsity volleyball player Kylie Hunnicutt has been named GIAA All Region! Way to go, Kylie!
Join the Wrestling Team!
Any middle and high school students interested in wrestling should see Coach Sperin (in the Lower School Gym) to sign-up. Practices will start Monday, Oct. 21 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Loft of the George. Students must have a physical on file before they can begin practice. Any questions please contact Coach Sperin at jsperin@gwa.com.
Who Let the Bugs Out?!
Artists in third grade are using a form of monoprinting in order to create symmetrical insects! The class looked at all different kinds of bugs, talked about their symmetry, and practiced drawing them. Then students got a piece of green paper and began the process of creating their own symmetrical insect! Next, they added some color, cut them out, and made them a nice little leaf to rest on! These and many other jungle-themed projects will be on display at the Wild About Art jungle themed art show in March!
