Positive Behavioral Supports at Lilja

Dear Lilja Families,

This week, we're looking at how data helps us improve our PBIS program and support student behavior.

Looking at data helps our PBIS system work the way it is intended—to support all students effectively and fairly. By reviewing information such as behavior trends, attendance, and engagement, we can see what is working well and where students may need additional support. Using data allows us to make thoughtful, consistent decisions, respond early when challenges arise, and ensure our expectations and supports are meeting the needs of our school community.

  • What We Track:

    • Office discipline referrals

    • Earned Compliments for our "Spot of the Week"

    • Results from social-emotional learning walkthroughs

    • Data from universal screeners

    • Staff surveys

    How We Use Data:

Our PBIS and SEL teams plan to review this information three times a year. We use it to:

    • Identify trends in behavior

    • Determine which interventions are working

    • Decide where to focus our efforts

    • Celebrate our successes

Home Connection Home Connection

Keeping track of behaviors can be helpful at home, too! Consider using a simple chart to track positive behaviors you want to encourage. This visual representation can motivate children and help you see progress over time.

Ways to talk about data at home:

Related Book: "The Report Card" by Andrew Clements - This book offers a fun way to discuss the role of data and assessment in schools, which can lead to conversations about why we track behavior data.

Things to watch:

"Sid the Science Kid" (TV series) - Sid often uses charts and graphs to track information in his scientific investigations.

"Cyberchase" (TV series) - Characters frequently use data and math to solve problems in a digital world.

"Big Hero 6" (Movie) - Baymax, the healthcare robot, constantly collects and analyzes data to help people.

"The Magic School Bus" (TV series) - Ms. Frizzle and her class often collect and analyze data during their scientific adventures.

"Phineas and Ferb" (TV series) - The characters often use data and observations to create their inventions.

Questions to Ask at Home, by Developmental Level Questions to Ask at Home, by Developmental Level

For Younger Students:
  • How do you feel when the whole school earns a Compliment?

  • What behaviors do you think we should celebrate more?

For Older Students:

  • Why do you think it's important for the school to keep track of behavior?

  • How could tracking your own behavior help you improve?

Thank you so much for your time and partnership!

Best,

The Lilja PBIS Team
